Something I fail to understand about the English language is why GROWN WOMEN are referred as "girls", yet grown men are obviously not referred as "boys". I'm not a native English speaker, when I translate "girl" into my native language, I get a word which is used only when referring to female children.

@@Dah42 it's a way to be more polite, I think. I'm Russian and I teach English at university. In Russian we have practically the same way of referring to a young woman using the word "девочка" (which is the Russian equivalent to the word "girl"). Because it's always pleasurable for women to see that they are being perceived younger than they are. I don't think that many men want to look younger or be referred to as "boys".

In defense of those who spoke English but still had trouble with "Massachusetts," that word isn't actually English. It was taken from a Native American tribe and roughly translates as "at or about a great hill." A lot of U.S. states are named like that.
