Unbelievable work as usual. I can’t understand how Ford would both design a belt that would degrade, eventually fail and lunch the engine, whilst at the same time making it so bloody awkward to change. Anyway looks like you got to that one just in time.

Hello Mr Meredith, I really enjoy watching your videos of car repairs... I also have a Ford Focus with a 1.5 liter ecoboost with the well-known timing belt problem. From experience with my Mondeo mk3 tdci I can say that engine additives are very helpful. What do you think if I add additives to my Focus, would that damage the engine? I have always used the Motor Protect product from Liqui Moly on my Mondeo. I would really like to know your opinion... Thank you in advance for your feedback... Mechanics like you with the know-how are still very rare in Germany... Please keep going... Greetings from Germany

Great videos, how did you remove the filter from the oil pump for cleaning as they looked pressed into the pump body?
@Suds649Ай бұрын
This is the reason why a flat rate is a system that benefits the company and the consumers. If you ever see how the companies do time studies for flat rates you would be amazed. They stop the clock every time they go back to their tool box to get a tool. A mechanic can’t do that.They give you a set time to remove a track pad on a undercarriage but if you are removing all the pads they cut the time because they say that you can do it faster because you develop a rhythm. My experience is that the chances of finding a frozen bolt that needs to be torched off in a lot greater. Flat rates are the greatest reason that mechanics are leaving the field of auto mechanics. The other reason is the cost of tooling to do your job. The world has changed. The auto industry has no standards. Computers and automation are making it possible to create different parts with minimum investment in that particular part. The result is instead of mass production lowering the cost of the part they stay ahead of the aftermarket by constantly changing it. They even go so far as to change the part number on oil filters without changing the actual part. In the 70s there was only about 3 headlight dimmer switches that would cover all the cars out there. There are hundreds if not thousands now. It’s funny how all the cars look the same today given how many millions of parts there are for cars as compared to the 50s,60,s and 70s.

I repair vehicles (mechanical/electrical) but I also do loads of rust repairs - I have one customer who deals in Landcruisers, lots of 'em. He sends his rust issues to me. Lots of 'em, lol. Same vehicles, "same" issues with rust - however repair times can vary hugely depending on how far the grot has crept. 1cm further than usual can lead to absolute hours of extra work - which then leads to "How does it take so much longer/cost more than the last ones?" conversations.
@jamesward57216 ай бұрын
Fecked off and bought a posher air hammer just there btw - not your Pickler as I am stingy & tight - but a more powerful than the one I use all day one. I'm gonna cheat, bang a 1/2" drive spanner to socket adaptor onto whatever socket needs rattling, rattle that with the hammer & turn the socket with a ratchet spanner.. which will do the same thing only cheapier. I ain't made of money like you Baz, mainly as I'm a good deal thicker. But not too thick to know a good idea when I see one.

So much for German made engineering
@eddyrunip2 ай бұрын
I’ve got an 18 plate transit custom. I change the oil and filter with castrol and ford filter every 10 thousand miles. Ford recommends every 24 thousand. Had the belts changed a couple of weeks ago as it’s 6 years old. The old belts were like brand new and no particles at all in the oil pick up. I think if you halve the ford recommended service intervals ( to a sensible service interval) and just use proper spec quality oil and filter , the belts will be fine. I do it myself so I know it’s being done properly and it’s not difficult to do.Unfortunately you can’t rely on a lot of garages to put the correct oil in.
