Federer stopped Nadal in his prime on clay, and also Djokovic during his legendary run in RG 2011. Shows how versatile and complete a player Federer was. Supreme talent, tough mind. Before anybody disses on this, his single handed backhand was his only kryptonite. Just watch 6:05. No other human player can consistently keep doing this. Sampras, Becker a few times but once you factor in how Federer grinded points with baseline rallies you realize how knowledgeable and talented he actually was.
@mikemoggerson6651
@mikemoggerson6651 Жыл бұрын
He was a supremely talented player, and one of the best of all time. His talent alone won him many, many slams. But the tough mind thing is questionable. He arguably could have 24-25 slams if he had a tougher mind. Novak and Nadal destroyed him mentally and for that he was known as a “choker.” For reference, let’s take a look at this shocking stat. Matches lost while being match point up: Djokovic-3 Nadal-8 Federer-24 This speaks for itself. Tremendous talent, but lacked the clutch factor compared to the other 2.

What's less known is the difference in matches won from match point down. Federer: 24, Djokovic: about 14, Nadal: can't find the number but about 10 afaik.

@@mikemoggerson6651in my opinion his technique was very prone to error when under pressure, especially the forehand, you can see how his technique can make it difficult to hit the sweet spot. However, that same technique is one of the effective when it’s working. However,I still think Djokovic and nadal are better mentally but I don’t think Federer is terrible mentally either.

When you factor in things like the smallest racket head on tour and a single handed backhanded against two of the greatest baseliners in history, I think Federer's tennis is unmatched in terms of shot-making ability on any surface. More so on clay, Federer's footwork is just a joy.

Federer had to beat his older generation (Sampras, Agassi, Kuerten), his own generation (Safin, Hewitt, Nalbandian, Davydenko) and the new generation (Nadal, Djokovic, Murray). Same with Nadal, except for the first, and he had to beat peak Federer. Djokovic never had any good competitor as the newer generations came on, and he took over once Federer declined and Nadal declined since 2014.

Federer is my number 1 and he just looks like a ballet dancer on clay - love this win! But I just need a second to digest the 81 match win streak. It's a really crazy stat. So for 2+ years from 2005-2007, no one who faced Rafa won a match on clay, and essentially no one was winning titles on European clay tournaments except Rafa. He won Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome and French Open 3 years in a row, including one Madrid in 2005. WTF?!?!?!?! Now I realize I conveniently tuned out during clay season at that time b/c I was so team Federer, my brain wouldn't let me watch clay season. 🤣🤣🤣

Federer was always behind in their head to head matches. Except on clay (and not just Federer against Rafa on clay obviously), he never really quite solved Nadal until ironically towards the end of both their careers. Anyways, still had two victories on clay against Rafa on clay and he remains one of three to have bageled him on clay. And also is the only player to bagel Rafa at least once on all surfaces.

That's because they played disproportionately on clay at first, and then played much more when Federer was weaker (10 matches between 2008 and 2013) than when Nadal was weaker (only one match between 2014-16). There was nothing to be solved, his game was fine. The only thing Federer could have done was changing the racket earlier but that would have been convenient since 2008 or 2010, not here.
