That's pretty much how old-school MMOs worked. There were no quest indicators, no exclamation points over their heads, etc. You had to actually track down the NPC (and sometimes they were mobile), know what to say to them (a lot of really old MMOs didn't have dialogue options, you had to actually /say the words to trigger the next bit of text), and then figure out where to go from sometimes vague descriptions. Hell, original EQ didn't even have a world-map. You had to navigate by coordinates and landmarks. People actually drew up maps of each zone based on trekking through them and noting down where everything was. I still have my old binder full of printed-out maps with all my notes on them.

That being said, From Soft have done a great job of making the lore of their games "opt in" as well as integrated into the gameplay. All cutscenes are a reasonable length, interesting, and skippable, a lot of the background is melded into the environment so you soak it in while playing, and item descriptions you can read as you pick up a given item or later for that added bit of world detail. They use the medium of video gaming to showcase the world with amazing success.

Made me snicker in the middle of every serious scene. Also this whole video is making me think of me very recently trying to get my friend into Warframe... Mostly that game needs to speak for itself, but it takes like a solid 60 hours for the plot to A, pick up, and B, explain anything, so occasionally I try to give her background on something and she's inevitably like "what the FUCK are you talking about". It's bad. 😂
