Since my painful divorce in 2022, I’ve lost 250 lbs.; 30 of my own and 220 of my abusive, arrogant narcissistic Ex of 30 years. I’m about to turn 63, I moved far away, I have a new, happy and drama free home and I’m too busy finding myself to make room for someone else. 😊

In 2020 I was batteling lung cancer when my fiancee told me he didn't love me anymore. This was the man I thought I was going to spend my life with. I was devastated. Four years later, I am cancer free. And though my heart was broken, I came out stronger. I love my quiet, positive, peaceful life.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I didn't realize that that was a thing until recently, medical abandonment. I know of somebody, a young mother with kids, who was battling breast cancer that had this happen to her. She lost her battle with cancer a few months ago, but she had persevered through all of that, and was stronger and better than she had ever been. She strengthened the bond with her family and her faith, and was at peace with living her best life with the time she had left. You are, and she is, a great inspiration!

Same. I took care of my husband before he died and I’m not doing that again. Most men I meet want nurses and purses. If they have no self-respect to stay in shape and have some savings, what makes them think I’d be interested in them! They basically have nothing to offer and just want someone to take care of them! They’ve actually said or implied that! I want to travel, stay in shape, do things, enjoy my life; not take care of an overweight, smoking, snoring, alcoholic mess! NOT INTERESTED!!

He sounds like a narcissist to me. Just my thoughts after hearing how he ignored you for Valentine’s Day to be with his daughter? If he’s calling you everyday why would he be spending VD with his daughter for dinner? Somethings fishy here? You should ask him where he’s going for dinner? Then maybe you go see if he’s telling you the truth? Looks like I’m about to start a new movie here! 😂

Yes. That guy wants/loves your attention. He knows how you feel about him and boy oh boy he’s enjoying it. But he’s more into someone else . . .still he figures it doesn’t hurt (him) to keep his options open- on the off chance that he might . . .just might- at some point -in the future -perhaps-want to take you down off the shelf. No matter how charming a man can be, I’m always shocked when I realize how utterly cold their hearts can run.

I was married once before to my high school sweetheart. He went in the Navy after high school. We’d been married a little over a year I caught him cheating on me. He done it right in front of me. It was like a cold slap in the face. I’d stayed faithful to him. I knew right then there wasn’t going to be a 2nd anniversary. I moved back home to my moms. He kept tearing up the divorce papers. I told him I was going to file like he was a missing person. He finally signed them. It was hard getting over it. But I did. I met my husband 2 years later. We’ve been married for 43 years now.❤ I enjoy Desi’s singing 🎤

I'm right there with you...terrible abusive relationships, alone for about 30+ years, also 72. For me, once I was free of any emotional bondage...basically empty...and I tasted life with no pain, no abuse, no tears, no fear...I realized how I deserved so much better than what I'd been willing to accept. I like to say, my last relationship beat the love out of me. I have no desire to let anyone into my life. I don't know what being loved feels like; and I'm no longer willing to take the risk of having my heart shattered ever again. Trust? That died decades ago.

Going through a divorce after forty years of marriage. I've been with him since I was fifteen. I was a stay at home mom and now at 65 I'm starting over. I have to find a job and find a way to support myself. I've never been more afraid, but one day at a time, I am seeing that being free is so much better than being lied to and cheated on. I thought I could trust him. Our sons and I thought he was a loving caring husband and father until we found out he had a secret life that he was very good at concealing. My head says stay strong and don't look back, but my heart is broken and every memory of the life we shared haunts me even in my dreams. I thought he was my best friend and soulmate. Turns out he was my worst enemy. I will move on and make a life that I love and can feel proud of and safe in . Thanks Susan fro sharing your life experiences . You will find so many unexpected benefits of being single. Betrayal and deception is the worst, and in my view. "Once a cheater. always a cheater." I was with a man I adored, in my first marriage, unaware but suspecting his infidelity. When he finally left me for an older, wealthy woman, I was broken hearted for several years. I questioned my own value. Then, he cheated openly on his second wife. The had a third marriage and fourth. The fourth seems to have worked. In the meantime, I remained single for years, just go remarried at the age of 65, celebrating our 8th anniversary on the 13TH.

My husband didn't physically leave, but he emotionally "checked out" and he couldn't understand why I wanted to end our marriage. He was physically present and wanted to stay married and that always puzzled me. He didn't want to work on the marriage. He felt everything was just fine but it wasn't. To this day, he feels he gave 1000% and I "took the easy way out." He will never forgive me for abandoning our marriage. What choice did I have? I was miserable. I decided and chose to no longer do ROMANTIC relationships because I am no longer willing to invest and be responsible for a man that wants you to make him priority, but is not interested in making you his priority. I don't mind spending time with a guy that is willing to be just plain friends without benefits(sex, etc). Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that they are interested in having a woman with a working brain and who VALUES and RESPECTS herself. I am very comfortable being single, but it would be quite nice to share time with a man that values/respect me and himself. At 71 years of age I am not willing to waste my time. Enjoy your life and enjoy being YOU.😍😍

Yes I have put up walls so I wouldn't be hurt anymore. When we go out to eat and he's always looking at everyone walking by our table or looking at others at other tables. I could just imagine what others must think of us sitting and eating and a man not talking to his wife. The numbness that's between us. And yes not afraid the be alone because I live alone every day with this man I'm married to. I love thrifting and going for drives. So be strong women, because life is beautiful. I hope you have learned the hard life lesson that teaches us how to flourish when living alone with another person. A person to whom you are married. The necessity is to accept that there is no “ we”; there is only you and the other person. Stop having expectations that will only bring you pain. You cannot be his/ her ideal. It’s not going to happen, so be you. If that doesn’t result in the closeness, fun, shared interests, aims and goals you dreamed of, accept the truth. Let him/ her go. Or stop imagining anything will improve, it will not. Live within the scope of what is and stop complaining, or leave the relationship and be free of it.

I go anywhere I want to go, and he never goes anywhere, other than the yard to do whatever work he likes to do. I have traveled quite a bit in the last 30 years and he always stays home with his cats. He never had friends to visit, only the people we know from Church on Sundays that we attended service. Lovely comment, however I think that you and your husband actually have some things in common like each other, the same residence, God and the Church, your kitties, the fact that you are both here at the same time on planet earth which is something we all have in common. What I'm hearing is that you are each others' soft place to land. Yeah, you're doing okay and God bless both of you too.

Tina, The way this comment is interpreted is surprising . The Poster never said anything ‘with pride’ - she just stated the fact that her Husband doesn’t have friends - (just like mine doesn’t.) Also if he doesn’t want to travel that is his prerogative - but it shouldn’t stop her from enjoying her interests. Tell me where it says in the Bible that any of these things are wrong. You can be a loyal, loving Wife & still have friends & interests apart from your Husband. Did God ever say we must sacrifice our friendships & interests for our Spouse? It’s not her responsibility to truncate her life so that he doesn’t feel bad. She can be a good, loyal, loving Wife and still enjoy her life resplendent with friends & interests. He is invited to come along side her but if he doesn’t, that’s his choice. She can love him while also loving herself. God loves them both & wants them to enjoy their lives. It’s her Husband’s choice if he wants to sit at home all day & not reach out to make friends. When she takes care to fill her cup ‘til it’s overflowing she honors her own life. But it also gives her MORE ability to give back to him. What would be wrong in my opinion would be to leave him if he was sick & vulnerable and needed her support at that particular juncture. But recharging our batteries with friends & interests is often necessary for us to stay healthy so that we can continue to give back. ❤

Warning signs of a one-sided relationship. Lack of peace. Confusion - healthy relationships should inspire a woman spiritually and emotionally. Bad company corrupts good character. When this man said "I don't want to be a part of your story", this is a warning of a selfish partner. Healthy relationships should always look to what can I give to this relationship rather than what can I get. There is nothing better than for a woman to feel and be treated as a precious jewel, more valuable than gold or silver.

It would seem that one would learn this as a youth, when growing up before having a mate, when living for yourself and learning who you are and what makes you happy.. Too many people go into a relationship expecting the other person to make them happy, and put that burden on them to be their only source of happiness.. and no one can fulfill that because happiness comes from within, not another person.

We were high school sweethearts. It was the 70's and we felt as if it was "us against the world"! My mother did not like him from the beginning. Said he was too self-centered. She was right but that just pushed me to love him more. We married a year after high school, I gave birth to 2 beautiful babies and we kind of settled in to life. He turned into the kind of husband who wanted everything his way and thought it was his "right" because he had a job and I stayed home with the kids. I got a job at the school when my youngest was in preschool so I would have the same hours and same days off. And I began to change... I became independent, self-reliant, and confident. I no longer had to come to him for money, I had my own. Well, he didn't like the new me and didn't come home from work one day. Said he didn't love me anymore. Found some one else. It hurt so much. I was scared. I didn't have a "real job", but I got one! You know what? My 2 kids and I turned out fine. When our daughter was in labor with her first child my ex-husband and I talked and agreed that we would need to find a way to get along now that we were going to be grandparents. And we do. We talk and sometimes we manage to laugh at some of the old days. I have found the love of my life, we have been married 31 years and he treats me fabulously. I do the same for him. If I had not married my first husband, I wouldn't have my wonderful (now grown) children and I wouldn't have met my now husband because we met at that "real job" I had to get :).

A very wise older lady once said “be with someone who loves you more than you love them” . I did not have that in my life. I definitely loved him more than he did me. At 67 years old, not sure what I want or need now. I loved deeply, but also lost deeply.

I have written in the past about my marriage break up. My husband was drinking and not faithful and a bit narcissistic I suppose, and I had two young children. I had a lot of family support thank goodness! And I had already finished my first college degree, And that was good in terms of the job market ahead of me as I was a stay-at-home mom. However, it was heartbreaking, so heartbreaking that my chest actually hurt when I cried. But I think that Susan is so right, that once that person that you loved is out of your life, then the issue becomes what you do with yourself. I also wrote in the past about my maid of honor at my marriage who, when I was left by my husband, sent me a card about crossing a bridge. The card said that I had to cross the bridge and when I got to the other side I might not even be sure how I crossed it. However when I looked back, I would not ever want to go back to where I was before. And I guess what Susan is getting at is that we develop strength through going through the painful emotions, the fear, and all those processes to rebuild ourselves in a better way. And by the way, I absolutely love when Desi sings! Lol!

We are at an age where we don’t need to compromise. We are independent..paying our own bills, nesting in our own homes..enjoying independence, grandchildren, etc. Everyone is different but for me, I am done with men. I have been married, divorced, and had other long term relationships. Now, a good book, a bubble bath, dinner out with friends, traveling far exceeds being with a man. I am free and independent and it is priceless! My last relationship lasted years..because I compromised. He also swore to never marry again and simply wanted a casual thing. He eventually cheated. I eased on out of that relationship and swore off men. Sure, there might be good men out there, but I value my time too much to spend the rest of my years looking for someone to “complete” me. The epiphany I had is that I am whole and complete on my own.😊

That is the real learning - being whole and complete in ourselves!! A lady friend told me men are just from a different planet. I laughed but then I have to agree. Men and women's thinking is so different and often incompatible so why struggle with it? John Gray's book on Men are from Mars Women are from Venus - tells it all!

In high school I deeply loved a good man … he was 3 years older than me , out of school, had a good paying job, attended church, shared same morals, didn’t smoke or drink…but I “ allowed “ my parents to control my emotions and decisions to eventually I broke up with him. On a rebound in 1972, I met a “ married “ man who was in middle of a divorce. I dated him against my moral compass because I “ thought “ I loved him and he loved me. We married a few days after his divorce. Within a few months I found a motel receipt in his pants pocket for two people at a motel in another town. I wasn’t the other person as I was home alone that night. This and other things continue for 20 years until I finally got the nerve to leave him in 1992 and be on my own. The best decision I’ve ever made. The many freedoms that decision brought has been amazing… financial independence, when and where I travel, what and where I eat, watch on television and the list goes on. I’ll never remarry.

What hurt me most about the story of your husband's betrayal was that he left behind his little boy. When people get married they make vows. When they have children those vows are solidified. Love may lessen with time and even morph into a placid friendship but a friendSHIP can steer you through the roughest waters of life. 🐕 And l LOVE WHEN YOU and DESI SING TOGETHER. He makes my heart swell with pride.

Life today is wonderful being single, visit and have dinner with my children and grandchildren. Working in my vegetable garden and artwork and enoying my cats and kittens I woulnt have time for a man if I wanted to...lol Luv u Susan and Desi, have a wonderful Valentine's Day 💖 9:37 9:37

When I love I’m all in, 100% But I’ve my heart broken 2 times in my life to the point I swore I’d never love someone 100% again. I’m a professional woman who had a job that was very demanding and stressful in a hospital. I put it first and both other relationships. Second, then, 10 years later, I met a man a physician, who worked just as hard as I did, and we fell in love, and for the first time in my life, I realized, he was my first priority. I decided that he was more important than my job. I’d never put any man first until him. We’re both retired now and realize that I love this man 100%. I also realized the other two relationships were one-sided they wanted me to quit my job stay home and I realize now that that was so selfish. They didn’t care about me or my goals in life so in the end I can say I love my husband 100%. I am blessed.

Yes. Thank you. It's nice to know some of us are happy in our marriages. There have been bumps over the years, but love was never the issue. We worked thru it. I am blessed, too. He still brings me flowers, treats me like a gem. We always say "I love you" before we go to bed. We've been married 45 years. He had to travel for a living so I learned to cherish my alone time. But I was always glad when he got home. My sons & I always had fun together when he was on the road! I still need my alone time. He respects that.

My husband Tommy died in 2014 after being sick for eight years and there is no way I am going to go to the heartache and pain if I have to take care of somebody else. Also he was the only man that I trusted since I was 15 years old., I am 73 years old fiercely independent. I've had this happen twice in my life. With my father & my sister after my mother died when I was 15. That night he came home from the hospital hours later drunk. The house was filled with family & friends but I only wanted my Dad. I ran to hug him & he pushed me away. My sister was 12 & I had to tell her Mom was dead. She must have been in shock or something because she just went back to what she was doing. He became an alcoholic overnight! No longer cared about us. A month later he took up with a woman. There was talk in the family that he knew her before my mother's death. She had been very ill for a long time. Several months later he married her. She came with 2 sons & a married daughter. The day the older son tried to kill my father I was screaming "" What are you doing?" over & over when I finally said "What am I doing?" I ran out the door & 3 towns away to my mother's people. They believed me about everything that was going on in that house! Told me I could stay with them. Like my mother, they were all about unconditional love. My father came to the school administration to sign me over to them. Never said one word. I begged my sister to come with me but she wouldn't. The step brothers got her on drugs. At 12! She died an early death from an overdose. These are the Cliff notes. People in an addiction can't love you. They don't love themselves! I had to let them go for my own freedom, faith & future. You are so right!! 💜🌻📸 Much love to you & Desi!

I hear ya!! I love the way you have been so honest and transparent about your emotions, your stance.....everything you say resonates with me....I respect and admire the person it all seems to have made you in to.... The older I grow the more I consider men to be either good appetizers or desserts but seldom feel anyone is the main course!! I dont know if this is part of aging (I am going to be 70 in December) or just the way relationships are evolving today....I l live alone, love my job, laugh alot, play alot, dance alot, go for long exploring walks, entertain alot, and my romance is within the crucibles of my lifestyle, myself, and the pain and joy in being alive....there is so much to love out there that my cup runneth over anyways...I for myself found limiting my happiness to just a man loving me or not as tragic (or was it my defiance).....I enjoy the company of men and have enjoyed being flirted with and romanced, but for some reason I have learnt to enjoy men more as good friends if I can find that in them, or nothing else and I dont take what they say after a couple of drinks too seriously with all due respect....I dont feel they can contribute much as part of my growth as I seem to find an acceleration in my growth all on my own and it would be difficult for a man to find a place for himself as an equal in my life...I hope I dont sound arrogant, narcistic or egotistical....I have just learnt to enjoy owning myself after devastating heartbreak and manage my circumstances on my own, see the world and men with a different lens now, loving those around me full heartedly without expecting anything in return bc just feeling love is a self fulfilling reward in itself to me which luckily did not get destroyed in me....I wake up feeling love everyday and it is a larger experience than any relationship with a man can give me...

Awesome video. I decided after choosing men who abandoned me emotionally or by other means that living without someone who loved me was preferable to living with someone who wanted to be somewhere else. I do not enjoy casual s*x and believe for me it clouded my ability to make logical decisions. I have been firm in my boundaries around that for a long time. Those long ago indiscretions were my only regrets and I try my best to live regret free now. The past year has been a valuable one for me and I have learned such important things about myself: how to finally cry, how to express my anger, how important it is to notice red flags and follow my gut whether I can explain it or not. Thought I'd never get this far. Thank you for your honesty, vulnerability, and insights.

Best we believe them the first time and spare ourselves what will be never ending disappointment. Cry, be sad, then move forwards. We are better than that to give the best of ourselves to those who don’t honor us. Susan, to that man that told you that, surely, it was his great loss. You stay fabulous!
