I literally just found this out. I spent 3 years blaning myself for gaining weight. I was an athlete, super active and healthy. I thought it was because I had a binge eating problem, but there was literally no cause for that problem to start. It started immediately after starting anti-psychotic meds. It has destroyed my self esteem because for 3 whole ass years, everytime I overeate, I scolded myself and told myself I had no willpower when the sole cause all along was the meds. I am mad at my doctor because he watched me struggle and start gaining weight immediately after the meds and did nothing for 3 years!! Im miserable, not myself anymore and overweight.

Oh my God. I was on Zoloft, Clozapine, Haldol, Olanzapine and many injections for one month and I gained at least 15 kgs in just one month. I was in mental hospital and this is my biggest trauma in my entire life. I felt numb, even more depressed and I wanted to kill myself after it. This had destroyed me mainly because I always suffered from anorexia. People at the mental hospital should learn more because instead of curing depression they just worsen it

my nurse practitioner said the weight gain on Seroquel was going to be "minimal" ... I was tired all the time, craving sugar and gaining weight rapidly. When I told her about my symptoms , she shrugged them off. When I said " I can't work like this" , she offered to put me on disability. I could not believe it ... 50lbs later and I decided to quit that practice to find a new one . At the new one I am doing much better and have lost over 30 lbs . slowly getting my life back ... Seroquel is horrible. It was a nightmare , a complete and utter nightmare ...

@@galacticwildfire it's the worst drug I've ever taken. I'm going to save you alot of pain and tell you that the anti psychotics are a waste of time. they are all horrible and nobody should take them unless they are in severe condition and have completely lost it . if you really need medication , some good ones i have tried that DON'T cause weight gain are lamictal (mood stabilizer) , zoloft (anti depressant) , abilify (mood stabilizer) , and hydroxizine (anxiolytic) ... I recently have stopped taking medication now and feel much better taking 5htp and lithium orotate , along with a healthy diet low in sodium . It took me so so long to process the trauma of 1. onset of a new mental health condition which I thought was a spiritual awakening 2. all the horrendous extrapyramidal side effects of the medications and finally 3. walking around in this new body that was twice the size it was previously. Not to mention I have had eating issues my whole life, been very active and very strict with my eating. This is certainly one way to make you feel terribly depressed

It is really disheartening to me that I was so “drug naive” as to what these doctors were giving me when I am perfectly mentally healthy and am left with these scars all over my body and belly fat. My psychiatrist (who prescribed me the Zyprexa) was very dismissive RE: my concerns. So against his advice, I started 2 taper off the Zyprexa & Depakote he prescribed me. W/in 15 months of gradual tapering, I became psych med-free on 1/1/2017 after 30+ different psych meds (including Zyprexa & Depakote) ovr a 40+ yr-period. Besides the w8 gain, Zyprexa robbed me of my metabolism (amongst notables) that contributed 2 my w8 gain. Being 5' 8.5" & 160 lbs nowadays & psych med-free, it's a much better feeling 4 me.

I am not even sure my diagnosis was correct. I had been on lithium for years and told doc I want to come off all meds aside from seroquel for sleep. He weened me off lithium but prescribed depacote. I gained over 20 pounds in 3 weeks! I cannot even come close to buttoning any of my shorts or jeans. The elastic waist shorts show my rear. This is unbearable. I cannot buy new clothes and cannot live in sweats. NOT an option. I went back to see doc and he said that he FORGOT to mention that I had to eat ONLY lettuce and tomatoes etc and was SERIOUS. I have stopped taking it cold turkey. This to me is more important. I have to make my own decisions here. That is an ABSURD side affect. Now I am 48 trying to figure out how to get rid of weight gain. I bet that just stopping the meds is not going to be enough. I cannot believe he would give me something that he KNEW would ensure I would be fat and not fit clothes. I already expressed to him that I had gone up two sizes naturally last year and how much of a huge cost it has been to replenish clothing to have something to put on my body. Not to mention depression about being a size 6 for my whole life and now a 10. I have no idea what i am now, but far from even 10. Unacceptable. I am pissed.

Hi Chuck. I wish I had a magic solution. The side effects of bipolar medications are difficult to deal with, especially in the weight gain department. I have just gone back to the gym and am working on getting back on a healthier diet. In a few months, I'll let you know how that's working. Thanks, Hannah

I feel you, Callista. I have been in the same boat with you. Weight gain from antipsychotic medications is one of the biggest reasons why people quit taking their meds and say it adds to their depression. First, I want to encourage you to discuss this with your doctor. Second, do NOT suddenly quit taking your medications. There can be very bad side-effects from doing that. In addition, it can cause a sudden increase in suicidal thoughts. One final thing to think about. I don't know what your life like before, what it was like living with untreated bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, there is no cure for bipolar disorder and all medication treatments have side effects. In considering a medication, it usually comes down to a risk-reward type thing. Are whatever side effects you are enduring worth the benefits you are receiving from taking the medication? Thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope you'll subscribe and join our community. My doctor refuses to take me off of it because she feels that it is a good sign that I am leveled out. And we will deal with the weight gain later. Last time I was on Abilify I gained 40 pounds. I’m between a rock and a hard spot because I feel good and I feel leveled out. But the weight gain is fast and furious and so upsetting. This is my experience on Abilify. I had cut out junk food and was going to a gym five days a week for several years before taking Prozac. The drug companies want to blame patients for the weight gain, not the drugs. I still can't take the weight off, probably because because I had such a healthy life-style on Prozac there's really nothing to change. I have to drop to 900 - 1k calories a day to lose one pound a week and that's unsustainable. My normal intake is 1200 - 1400 calories.

Cause the organism need to readjust . i also take lithium but my psychiatrist told me that lithium is no to blame for the weight gain compared to abilify . You can talk to your doctor and discuss about the dosage . I was on 15 mg and tried to cut it to 10 mg but i started shaking cause my organism still wanted that high dosage , so i returned to 15 mgbut when i cut it again after 6 months it was ok . Remember it has to go veery slowly in order not to have a relapse , but discuss it first . Also drinking a lot of water is good and exercising to flush out the psychiatric med from your system .(at least some of it cause you need to have the lowest dose possible to be at your best)

So, was weight gain from unhealthy eating and lack of exercise or was it the drug to blame for the weight gain?

I think it a few thing that’s causing the gain from meds even if you never had med with that side effect. One would be the craving to food. Two is the side effects make you like the food more and so by that you eat more and three it tricks your brain to think that your dying of starvation even if you just ate 3000 calories. Respidone did that to me but one of the better side effects from it

Hi Christina. You're right about a few things regarding bipolar disorder and weight gain. First, bipolar medications affect your metabolism. It's not unusual for people to put on 20-40 pounds within 2-3 months of starting medications. Secondly, the medications do affect the part of your brain that deals with feeling full and cravings. Have you found any way to effectively deal with those problems? Thank you. Hannah

It’s completely different now since I been off it for 4 years my weight is back to what it was before respidone. And the craving and interest to food. I never did a way to deal it

But also feeling sick my stomach lining that’s the reason why you throw up even you didn’t it still bothered my stomach. And a whole butch of these that are not topic

Hello Stuart. I feel for you. There's a warning label on antipsychotics now that says weight gain and the potential for diabetes exists with these medications. It's a scary thing when you consider that the medications you need to survive with bipolar disorder may end up giving you serious health problems...and there's no other option available right now. For me, it came down to balancing the risks vs the benefits of the medications. I decided I would rather live a "sane" life. I couldn't survive with the medications. What about you? Thank you. Hannah

Tim, unfortunately, many people are hit with antipsychotic and antidepressant medication weight gain. Let's face it, when you put on 20-60+ pounds, psychologically, you don't feel very good. That can lead to depression. There are several studies that show one of the key reasons people stop taking these medications is because of weight gain and other side-effects. However, you also have to balance the side-effects with the benefits. For me, I like being present in this world. Thanks, Hannah

I was on Zoloft and then Prozac for four months and I must have gained atleast 8-10 kgs. They made me feel ravenous and eat a lot of sugar. Anyway I quit those about 7 months ago but- while my appetite has returned to normal and I'm trying to eat healthy, I can't seem to loose most of that weight, it's so frustrating. Not to mention the brain fog and fatigue. I've seriously started to think that SSRIs damage your brain and metabolism. What do you think?
@healthyplace6 жыл бұрын
Hello H. Farrukh. Antidepressants and antipsychotic medications do change your metabolism and it's not unusual for people to put on significant weight. I have heard from people on both sides of fence; those who tried and couldn't lose it and those who have lost weight. I would discuss it with your doctor and share the extent of your concern. Maybe seeing a registered dietitian would be helpful to. Regarding the brain fog and fatigue, that is definitely something to discuss with your doctor. Could they be symptoms of your depression? Thanks, Hannah

Hi! Once the weight gain started to get past a certain point, I went to my doctor and discussed readjusting my meds. I readjust my meds whenever they are not working as they have in the past or causing me to have more depressive and hypomanic episodes. It's a process, but it's definitely worth it. I hope I answered your questions. It's about finding the right psychiatrist where you feel comfortable having an open conversation. Communication is key. Thank you! -Hannah

Hi there I'd like to ask you a question that's bothering me and can't find any answers out there. I've been on medication for the past 4 years and gained around 70lbs which I've done nothing to lose, eating fast food since then and not paying attention to my physical health. I've started a diet on the 1st of septembre 2018 so it's been 23 days now and I'm really happy because I stick to good habits of eating even though I put in one or two energy drinks once a week to blow off some steam, as dieting can be inconfortable sometimes. But the thing is that I haven't lost any weight so far. I'm on 3/4 of a bottle of clopixol a month and I'm wondering if this medication doesn't stop me from losing weight. I know that I started dieting only 3 weeks ago but I'm afraid that if in the long run I don't lose any weight I would stay fat my whole life and die of a heart attack or worse than that. I know it's my anxiety that speaks right now because it's only been 3 weeks but could you explain how long it took you to drop your extra weight being on medication? Your video is too short and lacks information. Thanx!

You noted that you talked to your doctor about this issue and that your medication wasn't working that well anyway--does that mean you went off your medication? It doesn't sound like it, but I can't quite tell. I've been on my medication for over a decade, and I have gained weight but for me going off of it doesn't feel like a healthy option. Thanks!

I am sorry you have had to deal with this and I understand your struggle. Do not give up on finding balance. Unfortunately this can be difficult with medication, and it takes time. Do not be afraid of being honest with your doctors and demanding to find a good combination that works for you! This happened to me.Back in 2007,I was 120 pounds worked out daily and took lexapro for anxiety.I gained 20 pounds in a few months and was hungry all the time .I have body issues and decided to stop taking them after reading weight gain side effects.Thought i would lose the weight easily I exercise and restricting my cals.i ended up to yo dieting for the next nine years and gained 90 pounds total. In the pursuit of weight loss I was confused and kept lowerimg calories and working out harder.Mymetabolism was so slow and when I would eat a little more than my slowed metabolism would allow ,I gained.Kept lowering and the process went on and on.So depressing. My advice to anyone would be not to crash diet in this process.huge mistake that resulted in steady weight gain.

Hi Tassey Saavedra. I just mentioned in another comment that antipsychotics and antidepressants can change your metabolism. Weight gain is probably one of the worst side-effects that many of us deal with. Not only because it's unhealthy, but it also worsens your self-esteem -- which is probably already a problem when you have depression. Thank you. Hannah

I was a on the thin side so the doctor wanted me to gain a little weight and was monitoring my weight back in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now The doctors aren’t monitoring my weight anymore I gained about 10 to 15 pounds on quetiapine in 2 years which was good. Now I’m on aripiprazole because I had mood swings and I think I have bipolar and anxiety and depression I’m basically in bed all day eating A little bit of junk food every hour of the day and the doctors don’t monitoring my weight because my meds doctor works from home and the zoom calls me on the Computer. I am adopted and my birth mom had schizophrenia and that’s the only thing I know about her so I don’t know if I’m prediabetic but I kind of stopped gaining weight which I’m thinking it’s because of diabetes because diabetes can come with weight loss omg what am I going to do now. 😮. My biggest problem food is chocolatey. I’m going to speak about this to my therapist she can give me coping skills and how to avoid unnecessary food cravings

When I was only 16 years old, my crazy aunt kept on talking to me about Depakote. After my great uncle's, her uncle's funeral, my aunt showed me what Depakote looks like. When I turned 17 years old, she gave me Depakote in June when school was out. My tummy started growing big and I looked pregnant in tank tops. When I was 18 years old, my crazy aunt kept on taking me to the doctors no matter what and they prescribed me on Depakote. When I wasn't even gaining enough weight, my crazy aunt took me to the doctors and they increased my dosage of Depakote. I began to gain so much weight that I had to throw away my favorite white skirt and my crazy aunt was so proud of herself. I asked her why I was getting fat and she said, "Hannah, you're a woman. All women have to be fat." Then I asked her about my great aunts, her aunts, and how they are still skinny. And my crazy aunt said, "because they're old and they don't get their period anymore." Then I also asked her about my two older cousins, who are two skinny girls and my crazy aunt said, "I always yell at them for being skinny. They're women and they have to be fat." And when I went to school at age 18 years old, it was hard for me to stay awake in marine ecology class and my teachers and friends had to wake me up. Even this exchange student from South Africa woke me up. He didn't speak good English and spoke Afrikaans. So, under the influence of drugs, I told him that I'm very tired from lack of sleep in Afrikaans. When I gained so much weight, Mommy had to buy me plus sized maternity clothes for heavily pregnant ladies. I was only 18 years old. It was too hard for me to go to school. Neither me or Mommy knew what was going on until she read about the side effects of Depakote. Then Mommy got very mad at my crazy aunt, which is her sister-in-law. By the time when I was 19 years old, I weighed 167 pounds, which is nearly 200 pounds. When I came home from school, it was dark, I was on my period, my phone was dying, and I was hungry. When I went into the kitchen to get a snack, Mommy told me to walk to the gym. So I walked all the way to The Y and then I exercised and walked to the stores and bought some stuff for the family. When my stuff all fell in the middle of the sidewalk, I called Mommy to pick me up and she was very mad at me. She yelled at me for buying food. Then she told me that I have to drive. I was on Depakote and I already knew that if I drive on Depakote, I will be charged and arrested for DUID. It seems like she doesn't know that. I was so sick of being fat because I couldn't fit into anything and I couldn't even wear pretty dresses or pretty skirts or skinny jeans. When my aunt took me to the doctors again, I told them that I wanna lose weight. My crazy aunt just said, "Hannah! You are a woman! All women have to be fat! You need to keep on gaining weight so everybody will know that you are a woman. Everybody has different shapes and this are what all women should be shaped like!" Nearing my 20th birthday, I lost weight. Mommy took me to the doctors again and my doctor said that I weigh 140 pounds, which I was so proud of. Then Mommy took me to the doctors again and my doctor said that I weigh 134 pounds. Then Mommy took me to the doctors again and my doctor said that I weigh 127 pounds. I was glad that I was losing weight. Then my doctor took me off of Depakote and he said that he wanted to talk to the person who's abused me with Depakote. And I said, "that's my aunt. She hates you because she thinks that you're evil." Then Mommy got very mad at my aunt, who is her sister-in-law. When me and Mommy were waiting in the waiting room in the hospital after my 20th birthday, my crazy aunt came and told me that I need to go see the doctors. I told her that I was gonna see some doctors and nurses and she said, "no you're not seeing these people. They're evil." And one lady who was a nurse told my crazy aunt that she believes in God and goes to church every Sunday and prays and my crazy aunt said, "you are so evil that God even hates you." My crazy aunt thinks that being a good Christian is telling people that they're evil and telling them that God hates them. Then Mommy took my crazy aunt into the girls' bathroom and started yelling at her and spanking her multiple times. Then my nice aunt, which is my crazy aunt's normal older sister, came in and told my crazy aunt that she needs to go away. Then when I was in the hospital with IV's in me, my crazy aunt tried to yank me out of it and told me that I need to go to church. I told her that I was in the hospital. I am 21 years old and I am now anorexic and I feel fat all the time. My aunt, which is my crazy aunt's normal little sister, has the same problem. She is super skinny and always feels like she's fat. I stopped taking Depakote, but I gotta stop my crazy aunt before she does this to another girl. When I go to church on Sunday, I will ask all the girls if they got abused by Depakote. And I will say, "if you got abused with Depakote, raise your hand." I really didn't wanna gain weight, but my crazy aunt wanted me to. She didn't get arrested, though. Mommy just yelled at her and spanked her multiple times. Now I know why my crazy aunt is put in the same hospital room with a crazy person. Depakote really put me in the hospital. I gotta stop my crazy aunt before she does this to another girl.

Hi x Calamity. Here's my advice. If you are not happy with the way your doctor treats you on a personal basis or the quality of your care, I would recommend at least getting a second opinion if not looking for another doctor altogether. The doctor works for you. You pay the doctor. Don't accept poor treatment or an indifferent attitude to what you need. Hannah

Hi Shirley. I feel ya. Whether it's antidepressant or antipsychotic medication that we're taking, many of us put on a lot of weight. I want to encourage you to discuss this with your doctor and talk about how challenging this is for you. The struggle is real. Maybe a dosage adjustment or a different medication will help. Maybe a change in diet. To be honest, I don't know. As for stopping my medication, I would not do that. It's what keeps me stable and sane. It's a horrible trade-off though. And I do know people who have quit taking their medication because of the weight gain. Unfortunately, the mental health effects of doing that were not good. (P.S. Do not stop or change your treatments without first discussing it with your doctor.) Hannah

May I ask if you still take the medications and had success losing weigh while on medications? I have gained about 70lbs and was able to withdraw from medication for about 3 months, in which I lost 50lbs. However I experienced a manic episode, I still need to lose more weight, I go to the gym regularly and have a personal trainer which is costing me a lot of money, I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Since going back on medications I have not gained weight, but I am losing weight at a much, much slower rate. I am also noticeably weaker. I think my PT is getting frustrated with my lack of progress, as am I. I count my calories every day and try to eat a low carb diet. I just need to know if I can get this weight off while on the medications, otherwise I may try to withdraw again just to get the last bit off and hopefully reverse my diabetic condition. I have appointment with Psychiatrist in a few weeks to discuss. But im seriously getting bummed out by it.

Nick, I don't think you understand. Weight gain is a side-effect of bipolar medication. Some of these medications can increase your appetite or cause changes in metabolism leading to weight gain. Whether a certain medication will cause weight gain or other side effects varies from person to person. Hannah
