My meds never gave me ravenous hunger. The weight gain was much more subtle. But the worst part for me was being told it was my behavior and lack of self-control that was causing it. I gain almost 100 pounds in six to nine months. So I am so glad to hear someone else had a similar experience of that kind. Kinda makes me want to cry because for so long I was told it was all me.

Also these types of meds work as a antihistamine. Fun fact: antidepressants were first used as allergy medications. They block specific proteins (H1) that also block the ones that control thermogenesis (metabolism). Unfortunately it's a double edged sword.

My tips from personal experience (on Seroquel for 9 months): -Ask if you can take your dose at night or have extended release. This makes you less prone to feeling cravings all day. - have cheap, low calorie snacks on hand. I love plain Cheerios, baby carrots, frozen fruit, air-popped popcorn, and even ice cubs. - ALWAYS carry gum, sugar free hard candies, and bottled water with you when out and about. Dry mouth makes you crave things like ice cream or soda. - If your energy is too low for cardio workouts, you can do free, 10 minute beginners workouts on KZbin! I do one for arms and one for legs. It will help build muscle with boosts your metabolism. - As a rule, try to consume more protein and fresh fruits/ veg than plain carbs. - Don’t starve yourself. Underrating will only make your metabolism worse, and hurt your mental health as well. Try to eat consistent, moderate portions. - Talk to your doc! I was really upset because I gained ten pounds rapidly when I first got on the medication. My doctor lowered the dose a bit, and I started doing these tips. Since then, I have maintained the same weight (but I think I gained some muscle!) - Get your blood tests regularly. Doctors recommend blood tests twice a year/ four times a year. These will see if your thyroid and blood sugar are normal. If there is problem, they can treat it. 💓 Best wishes 💓

Although her voice is to some extent calming and conveys well her delicate and peaceful nature I cannot excape thinking that she is also very much so holding herself back. Maybe because of a history of her not being able or being afraid of communicating her experiences I can sense almost something grabbing her by her throat when she's talking. I always blame myself for no self control, but it was very comforting that when I expressed my frustration with my doctor that it’s my fault that I’m gaining weight, but she interrupted me and said that it’s not my fault at all and that it’s due to the medication I’m currently taking. However, I can’t shake that I am uncomfortable with my body and especially with how clothes fit if that makes sense, but thank you for the video I really needed to see I’m not alone ❤

I gained a lot of weight from taking antidepressants and it sent me into a spiral of severe body dysmorphia. Because I am autistic I have the tendency to hyperfocus on one thing at a time and that’s really scary if you’re trying to lose weight. An easy weight loss tip I learned from my younger step sister. She is a professional trainer in Boulder Colorado. Take you full weight in lbs Divide that in half and half your weight covert into ounces of water daily. Example; 150 lbs ÷ 2= 75 lbs Drink 75 ounces of water daily It really aids weight loss very well by flushing fats from your body. Speeds up the digestion process which contains the sugars and fats in foods. So easy and so effective. The added plus for those taking drugs to prevent psychosis is hydration. These drugs cause severe oral and digestive dryness which quite commonly causes the dreaded constipation. Be safe and stay well!

Hello, this is the first video I have watched by you and I find this very helpful. Living with Schizoaffective disorder it's very "disheartening" as you said to see the meds take you in a direction of added weight gain. I really hope other people find your videos because this is kinda bad that the psychiatrists don't really know why people gain weight because of antipsychotics. Keep making videos and just know you're not alone

Thank you for this video. I also experienced weight gain on meds. They made me hungrier. 3 things helped me to deal with that. First,i only eat when i feel physically hungry, this helped me reduce my cravings A LOT. Second is brain healthy diet. It helped me so much to feel better,that i started needing a lot less antidepressant medication. I talk about that on my channel. And third is exercise, just like you said. Your videos help me a lot, because the stigma around psychosis is very upsetting and so unfair.

You are beautiful and so informative. It is the HT5 23 receptor that gets blocked with most antipsychotics. Quetiapine blocks the serirtonone receptor and causes massive carbohydrates cravings. I often suffer from sleep eating on quetiapine. So even if we watch what we eat our bodies' electric system can not process the fat. I lost some when I was on an Eat To Live (Joel Fuhrman) style diet and when doing intense intermittent fasting, but I have yet to be at the same level I was before medicine. There are actual studies on physiological reasons for the weight gain on psych meds, completely out of a person’s control. I encourage everyone to do research. This is why diet won’t work for many people because of the way the body stores fat completely changes. I gained weight on meds and couldn’t lose it until 2 years after. Meds can completely alter your metabolism, and does not just alter the signal in the brain that tells you if you’re satiated or not.

I am so happy I found you on here! I have gained 40 lbs while dealing with my mental health thru medication. I feel like an elephant. I’m working hard not to gain anymore. But this med has done so much to stabilize me. Is it worth it? I think yes. I went out and bought some clothes that fit me and not having to stuff myself into uncomfortable clothing was a big relief. Some of my family love to tell me how fat I am and therefore unattractive. This is not helpful as you can imagine. I’ve explained to them what is happening and they have eased up on me somewhat. My husband is extremely supportive. I feel so happy to have him although through some of my worst periods are difficult for him because he doesn’t know what to do. In these episodes I self harm. However, this has not happened for a long time now. And I attribute it to this medication. So I take care to keep myself well groomed ( which is sometimes hard ) and as I said, wear well fitting clothes. There are times when I go around looking like a dirty witch. But that’s just how it is sometimes. I am making an effort to be kinder to myself. I try to stop the negative thoughts as soon as they start and replace them immediately with something positive. This really does help me. I feel for all of you out there who are struggling. You are not alone. 😊

The strategy I have for avoiding weight gain which does not work perfectly is to eat a nutritious brand of frozen dinners which provides balanced meals that has about eight different meals and basically eat only that except for occasional treats. The key detail here is to find a nutritious brand of frozen dinners that provides balanced meals and which has some variety. EatingWell frozen entrees marketed by Bellisio Foods, Inc is decent brand of frozen dinners. Spending hours planning meals and cooking meals would not be a strategy that I could follow for long. Choosing the right antipsychotic, as you state, is also very helpful. Exercise helps one feel better and is excellent in terms of general health but unless one is running marathons I don't think that moderate exercise results in much weight loss.
@Eaglesda214 жыл бұрын
I worry that you may be missing out on important nutrients with frozen meals, as they tend to be less nutritious than the non-frozen equivalent. I recommend looking into meal planning on weekends where you cook for most of the week ahead of time.

I have gained 8 kilos since being on it for a year and I have Body Dysmorphic disorder so it's terrifying to me. High dose of Benzo's make it almost impossible to exercise. You are giving your body muscle relaxants then telling it to work out so it goes into shock. So food is probably the main thing for me right now but even on diet shakes I am still gaining weight. When you stopped bringing sugary carbs into the house, did that help? Unfortunately, I live with parents, and even if I don't bring them into the house, my parents do. I'm wondering if the only solution is moving out on my own. I try to eat 1700 cal a day, which is what I need to not be hungry at bedtime, but normally, I have binging sessions where I go WAY over with the "help" of sweets like cookies and cakes. Don't make weight loss the goal of exercise because that ultimately will not work as well as you hope. Exercise for joint and cardiovascular health and to elevate your mode. Do it to make yourself feel good and not make weight loss the point. A trick I learned years ago to encourage walking was to find a good audio book I really liked and to only listen to it when I walk. I guarantee that it will keep you walking and want to walk more often.

@kkman1012344345576644 жыл бұрын
aayma the best it’s an high fat low carb moderate protein. 70% fat, 5% carb, 25% protein. Healthy fats and vegetables are the staple of keto, dr berg is a great source of information he’s got a KZbin channel. Your doctors might advise against this but they don’t know shit. I truly believe people with mental illness or disorders need higher nutrients and might be carbohydrate intolerant. I’ve been doing so well on this diet everything is more tolerable. It does take a lot of determination, you can’t cheat or drink, and you gotta quit sugar addiction is a pain in the ass for about 2 weeks but once you’re over that hill it’s amazing. Being healthy makes such a big difference when you have a mental illness. Don’t let your psychiatrist discourage you from doing this, I had my physician and psychiatrist say it was unnecessary, but this is really the missing piece of the puzzle when it comes to feeling good.
