When I wandered from the faith, I came to the point of deconversion to atheism. Standing in my mind at that spiritual precipice, I felt the despair so many atheists describe. I called out to God, "I'm at a point where I can't believe in you. If you are real, I can't have faith. Please remain faithful to me." This was a turning point where God started showing me what was wrong with all the arguments were that led me away and with my own perceptions of God and the church that led me away. God helped me in my unbelief.

“All I need is a better reason to believe than disbelieve.” That right there is gold. I struggle with my faith in the Lord. Sometimes, leaving a question unanswered unsettles me. I feel like I am not a Christian when I allow these doubtful thoughts in my head. I feel like I have let God down exponentially. I have to remember to stay grounded in Him and to trust Him with every fiber of my being. Thomas is a good parallel to this. The same disciple that said, “Let us also go, so we may die with Him.” is the same disciple that doubted the resurrected Lord. It astonishes me. It makes us realize that we are not perfect, but He has that already figured out for us. Thank you Mike. I love your teachings.

46:58 This discussion about “prayer” or “prayer and fasting” was brought up in the book: The Case For Christ. In the book, one of the scholars stated that around the year 300AD there was a big push toward monasticism. (Which was identified as people becoming Monks…monk, monasticism). From which, fasting was highly valued. The book stated that before 300 AD there are no manuscripts with “prayer and fasting,” and that the fasting part was added in during this time. It’s also a great evidence toward knowing that the scriptures have not changed much over time, as we can see what changes have been made based on the dates of the manuscripts. In fact, only 1% of the changes that have been made and copied over time change the meaning of the text, and 0% of these change any core components of Christianity. My source is again: The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel.

I often have trouble with others’ views that Jesus always healed anyone who asked. What about all the ill people lying at the Bethesda pool waiting for angels to stir the water? Jesus must have walked over and around many of them to reach out and heal only one. I think that means something.

Haven't finished the video yet, but if I recall correctly he did heal everyone who asked, but he didn't heal every sick person he saw. His mission wasn't to heal a bunch of people in order to improve their lives, it was to show the character and power of God for generations to come. He only had 3 years for his ministry, God was (as always) strategic with timing.

Personally, I have been dealing with Psychological doubt. I came from many different church denominations and currently struggle to even understand who God is at a fundamental level. Which, as a Christian is very scary because I don't know how to even address Him properly. Currently, I believe that GOD is Triune upon evaluating various resources earnestly. Yet, a terrible fear subsides within me and for the sake of the church that this view of God may be wrong. As a result, the possibility of the church being the embodiment of idolatrous worship scares me beyond belief. The denominations I came from were the Jehovah Witnesses and the Latter Day Saints, I currently attend a "non-denominational" church. If anyone reads this, is there any advice that you may have?
@MikeWinger4 жыл бұрын
That fear you feel is understandable, especially given your past. Here’s a few thoughts for you. 1) your prior belief was based on trusting the Watchtower or the LDS organization. Your current belief is arrived at due to reflection on scripture and letting the plain text speak without an organizational authority telling you what it means. 2) There are abundantly clear indications of the deity of Jesus (which these groups tend to focus on) in scripture. The discovery of the Granville-Sharps rule in Greek has made this case even stronger in passages where Jesus is clearly called God. 3) It’s not healthy to be scared of “what if I’m wrong” when you don’t have good reason to think you are wrong and you do have good reason to think you are right. 4) combat these fears by remembering the nature of the organizations that instilled the fears in the first place.

I had questions that I couldn't ask people because they most likely wouldn't have thought of them and I would just mess their head up too. I know someone who suffers from epilepsy and an elder in the church used this passage to claim that the affliction is actually a demonic possession and not epilepsy per se.
@caroleimani97543 жыл бұрын
Epilepsy "looks like" demon possession. When I was in Junior High School, way out in the country in the 1960's there was a boy in our class who would have "Grand Mal" (Spelling?) seizures. He would fall on the floor and start thrashing around, kicking his shoes on the hardwood floors. We were told to stand up and walk out of the room. The other kids told me that was their "monthly John Doe Practice Drill." I guess before I got there, this happened quite often. Eventually they had a Special Education School, but it took them a few years to build it..As I look back, I wonder if this was demonic, a chemical imbalance, or both. Nobody seemed scared. They were used to it.

I saw a video recently in which was described that the rabbinical method of the time, to cast out demons required that the demon first be forced to identify itself by name. With a mute child, the usual method would not work, since the demon would speak through the voice of the victim, to identify itself. Because Jesus was able to cast out the demon, he proved he was the messiah.

Some Bible versions leave out an extremely important part of Mark 9:29... Jesus full statement was "this kind can come forth by nothing, but prayer AND FASTING." Fasting is key in spiritual warfare. Jesus referenced fasting many times. Also, why should we think people harming themselves is ever on their own and not always because of evil spirits? We know God doesn't make mistakes. To me, if we believe some people solely desire to hurt themselves without an evil spirit upon them (not necessarily in them) then that means God made a flaw in us.

As mentioned in the other comments, Mike used a Bible translation that omitted the "and fasting" part of "prayer and fasting". Other translations have fasting included. Given the flow of the story, prayer and fasting is the more likely rendering. Another point of contention about this passage, the Cessationist would say that the miracles have ceased after Jesus and the Apostles, but in this passage, the disciples couldn't cast the demon out when Jesus was away. The miracles were not happening while Jesus was still walking the earth. When Jesus came back, He was noticeably irritated there was not the faith necessary to cast the demon out. This is a good indication that this is the same reaction Jesus would have with the one who believes in Cessationism, that you are not only faithless, but perverse in the way you twist the teachings of Jesus. Miracles in the minds of many have ceased not because miracles are no longer possible for the time we're in, but because of the way you believe. Mark 6:5-6.

If God coming down and becoming human was a means of God making himself relatable to us humans... @OneWingedShark8 ай бұрын
No! He bore our sin in his own body and put them to death, bearing the wrath of almighty and holy God. As the perfect sacrifice for sin, he was rejected (he who knew no sin was made sin) unto his own death. Jesus knows above all others what it is like to face the disapproval of God for sin, and that sin was not even his own!

I think it is important to note that in the Bible you are reading currently for this particular segment misses an important element in Mark 9:29. Jesus said " This kind come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Which to me signals that prayer alone does not always cast out all kinds of demons some require the little extra push that fasting combined with prayer offers.
@joshuacavender15364 жыл бұрын
That word, fasting, was not in the original manuscripts, at least the oldest ones. It was likely added by a scribe. So we don't need to teach doctrine on fasting to cast out demons.

46:34, "I don't know why else this story would be here. Why is this a random exorcism in the middle of Mark 9?" Um, because Mark was recording history and that's what happened after Jesus returned with Peter, James. and John from the mount of transfiguration. Mike, I think you're stretching the text to force some novel interpretation to get KZbin Views. If the boy is a parallel to Jesus then what does the father's lack of faith say about God the Father? If the boy had meant to be a parallel to Jesus and the crucifixion, Mark would have inserted some parenthetical statement to imply that, but none of that is there, and thus, to say such a thing is wholly eisegesis.

ridethelapras Mark is not nuanced. Mark was the first to be written and therefore not as concerned about "structure." He was concerned with just getting the facts set down, and therefore, Mark is far more brief than the other gospels. The ordering of events in Mark is far more likely to be the particular order of events than Matthew's gospel, as Matthew being a tax collector knew shorthand and could set much more down from the notes he would have taken during Jesus's ministry. Nuance can be argued for the other gospels but not Mark. Mark was brief and to the point, setting down the facts quickly.

ridethelapras Continued... Furthermore, You said, "Who are we to presume what they would have said under any circumstances?" Exactly. That is my whole point! Mike Winger is literally putting words in the mouth of Mark, adding to text in this video. My point is, Mark doesn't say one way or the other, and that it is wholly eisegesis to say what Mike Winger is saying.

Yeah I think it's impossible for any fallible Fallen human being to have a perfect faith where there is no doubt at all. To have this kind of Faith would have been only possible if we were the Messiah ourselves

Take away is you think not there's a Scientific way atheist can seek God's but Spiritual one's seek after Holiest of names nearby out of harm's way...
