I always felt Willie had a Lester Piggott shaped chip on his shoulder until Lester died. I've never heard him so emotional on that day. Despite the intense rivalry, Willie gave Lester the greatest tribute of anyone. Not with words but with his emotion. Willie is a true gentleman and a great, great jockey. And I was wrong about him.

Great great jockey, I lost count of the times the little fucker got up and done me in the shadows of the post. I didnt even have to look at who it was, I knew it would be Carson. He had a remarkable knack of chinning me on the line.

Totally agree, no matter how many times I watch the re-run of that race, I still don’t know how the hell he won, especially if you freeze it at Tattenham corner and check out where he is. Amazing ride on a willing partner ❤️

When they mentioned the film 'Rainbow Jacket' which I think Bill Owen was in too one of the advisors to the making of that film was a certain John Hislop the owner of Brigadier Gerard. How uncanny that he was trained by Dick Hern who then employed Willie as his main Jockey!!

@@robertdelacy3434 Explain yourself. Are you saying Willie Carson was not underrated or your opinion of Hollie Doyle is not the same as the majority? I have watched horse racing for nearly sixty years, so I am not likely to change sports at my time of life. So when I suggest Hollie Doyle reminds me of Willie Carson, the way she drives from the body and keeps her mounts balanced and running straight. I did not suggest she was as good as Carson, at least not at this point in her career.

Definitely best era of horse racing 80s Early 90s, Steve cauthen best Jockey I've seen. Piggott Carson eddery Cochrane Starkey, swinburn, Cecil hern cumani stoute tree Harwood .... So many more but this was my idea of real class era of horse racing jockeys trainers owners horses .
@petecarter2618

Indeed I would say 60s up to early 90s there was so many good horses, recognised trainers, owners and jockeys household names unlike today's lot it doesn't compare to the old days. And perhaps alot earlier than the 60s Ribot, Crepello and Golden Miller the list is endless.

My uncle had 300/1 with Ladbrokes for Nashwan doing the 2000 Guineas and Derby double with Ladbrokes, they didn't see him as a Guineas horse at the time (just after he had won his second race) never had a lot on it though and sold half the bet to his mate.

If only the public knew what a selective jockey he was ante post. Gave his best when on the best horses in the big races but unfortunately rode the handicap horses in a different manner to suit the market gambles.
