For context, I’m am legally blind, author and have epilepsy. I was bullied from the first day of kindergarten to the last day of 6th grade at that school by both students and some teachers. I had this one second grade teacher who was, I think, the worst of them. She used to yell at me all the time for not paying attention. (We didn’t know staring spells were seizures at the time, to be fair) and when my work would come up missing, I would get yelled at in front of the whole class. I was still using print at the time, and when the print was too small to see even with my nose dragging across the page, I’d just write really random things on the paper to get the point across. One day, a kid stole my reading book out of my backpack on the bus home, and it was found, much the worse for wear. Got yelled at in front of the class as well. Later that same day, o had some paper that she had, once again, refused to enlarge so I could see it. I’d had enough. I ignored it, getting into trouble as usual. Then came math class. I was totally confused since I would miss about 30 seconds of instruction periodically because of the seizures. I raised my hand, and she came over and “helped” by explaining something in a way that you would a particularly dense grapefruit. 😂 I told her “thanks, but you don’t have to be condescending.” I “And what does that word mean” she said, angry as usual . “You’ve went to school to be at teacher, didn’t they teach you how to read the dictionary?” This was literally an innocent question. I thought she needed the definition. As a kid, the dictionary was my favorite book. I had a tv that had a camera attached that magnified whatever was under it. She sent me to the principal’s office where the man (who had a soft spot for me) proceeded to laugh when I told him the story (she had written that I was disrespectful on the slip) and gave me a can of coke. He left that summer. He was like 70 something though.

I've worked in a bakery in one way or another for many years and have gone to school for it too! I applied for a job at a local bakery for some extra spending cash. I was "promised verbally" all these things I'd be able to do eventually (the fun stuff like baking, cake decorating, etc). I was basically looked over because the owner apparently felt threatened by me. I didn't need the job, I wanted the job. As soon as he mocked me for knowing how to work specific equipment because I recognized it as the same model from a previous job, "oh this one? You used this exact one?" Pointing at it and everything. It was degrading. I left not long after and opened my own little home bakery that's made to order.

I've had very similar situations in restaurants. I ran a kitchen for 20 years and I get these owners with no experience that hire me to manage the kitchen, then they come to work daily and tell the staff the opposite of things I've told them , change the schedule without telling me , keeps changing the menu based of customer suggestions, etc. It finally just made me give up , the last one felt like he hired me specifically to rival with me and undermine me.

Living full time as a White US born citizen in Mexico it is by far the most frustrating thing about living here. Literally everyone I try to make friends with will without fail start asking for money or loans within the first couple days of meeting them. I'm living in Mexico because the cost of living is a lot lower and I am able to work remotely for US companies and get paid US wages. So things are getting better day by day. But the 1st year I was here I was barely getting by and just had to stay in my apartment so I didnt have to get bombarded with requests for money. Then angry scowls when telling them I really didnt have anything to give. They all thought I was lying.

I’d pretend to be stupid when I worked retail. I worked in a freezer for a while and would get asked about meat quality all the time, I didn’t know shit about meat, so I’d always ask what it was for, how they’d prepare it, what seasonings they’re using, basically have them explain in detail to me what they wanted. I’d “think” about it for a second and just point to whichever one I felt like. Later on they’d find me and tell me I really know my stuff and how good their dish turned out. If they wanted to outsmart me and buy the one they thought was better, they’d still leave happy because in their head they picked the better piece. It’s the same idea as those TikTok’s you see of people tricking food critics into thinking McDonald’s is a gourmet burger, hype it up and they’ll assume it’s amazing and then will say it’s amazing after they try it

The moment someone underestimates you, you have an incalculable advantage over them. If someone thinks you're clueless, don't be p*ssed - celebrate! You've already won. You now know their level of knowledge/expertise and they haven't realized yours. Most important - remember to communicate on a level they understand without 'talking down' to them.

When is it smart to be dumb? When you are getting picked on for years and often physically attacked, let them telling you to do stupid things(not dangerous) or telling you to ask for adult items from your parents that have slang names. i.e. packet of raspberry rubbers, or a johny cloth. This entertains them without needing to really harm you.
