As a parent, you want the best for your child-whether it’s in school, friendships, or sports. But when they start mentioning discomfort after training or competition, it can be tough to tell: Is it just soreness, or is it something more serious?
Many parents ask, Should we have brought them in sooner? Is this something we could have addressed earlier? These are great questions, and in today’s short video, I’ll walk you through some key signs to help you determine when your young athlete might need care.
One of the biggest challenges? Athletes often try to hide injuries. They don’t want to let their team down, disappoint a coach, or miss a big event. That’s why open communication is so important. Just like you check in about their schoolwork and friendships, making it easy for them to talk about how their body feels-without fear of judgment-is crucial.
Understanding the difference between general soreness and a brewing injury can help prevent long-term problems. Soreness is typically broad and fades in a day or two, whereas pain often lingers and can be pinpointed to a specific spot. If your athlete is repeatedly mentioning the same issue or pointing to one exact area of discomfort, it may be time to take action.
Most importantly, involve them in the process. Kids want to feel in control, especially when it comes to their sport and social life. Helping them understand what’s happening and guiding them through recovery can make all the difference.
