Sometimes I get wiped out with frost, but this it's Mar 20th, and my tomatoes are almost a foot tall and no frost in the forecast for at least the next 30 days. I can't help myself. I've tried, but when it gets warm in mid February, I start planting.

Travis, i'm watching this on Monday, March 18th and tonight we will be getting down to 29 degrees! And I'm in central Arkansas! I've always heard to wait until after Easter to plant outside. And I take advice from my uncle because he's been gardening for over 70 years! I really enjoy your channel and advice. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Easter is unreliable. It moves every year. It can be as early as Mar 22 and as late as April 25. More than a month's difference.

I have never even looked up our last frost date. When I first came to GA from NH, I just planted when the frosts were over. Over the years here I found that some stuff needed me to plant earlier. After 36 years now I can pretty much just tell when it is warm enough. One year I planted in February, most years I didn't. We've moved now and I have a much sunnier garden. I wanted to be a better gardener so I looked up our last frost date and it said sometime in April! I just laughed and went back to my "I'll plant when it feels right" guide.

Looking back at my 2023 garden journal; I planted green beans, corn, squash and cucumbers on March 6. Outstanding performance on all. I hesitated this year because I relied on the almanac data for Sylvania GA and have not planted anything but potatoes and herbs. Of course the tomato seeds were planted in February and most of the seedlings are ready to go in the ground. I'll get the vegetable seeds in the ground this weekend, including okra and corn.

Awesome video, thanks! I loved seeing data from your area. I don't think most gardeners understand that when they hear "average last freeze date" that there's roughly a 50/50 chance one might need to replant or at least cover everything and pray. At a minimum, the average doesn't convey any information on how likely a freeze might be prior to or after that date. Here in central Texas, the last freeze date posted by most weather stations corresponds to the 70th percentile (or date at which there's a 70% chance the last freeze will have occurred), which is a more conservative estimate. In our area, that's an 8 day difference (March 3 =50%, March 11= 70%). We'd need to wait to March 24th for 90% chance of missing the last freeze. Keep up the great content!

as inportant as frost date are for planting discision, heat units- degree days can also affect planting decisions . in zone 8b if i plant a tomatoe seed march 15 it may come up in 10-21 days, if i plant april 1 it may come up 7-14 days, if i plant april 15 it may emerge in 7 days and so by middle of may it may popup in 5 days. same with 6 week old plants started in greenhouse, a april 1 tomatoe plant may bloom about the same time as may1 plant. the old growers who taught me did not call it degree days or talk about heat units but did think planting before it had wamed up right was a mistake. ( that was a source of disagreement for some)

Last year here in Idaho we froze on June 22nd. Yes, in summer. Over the past six years we've frozen 3 times in June. We have to take a completely different approach. If it's going to freeze, break out the giant tarps! If you can protect it, you can plant it.

Hey Travis. I live off Cannon Rd a couple miles away from you. I listen to the old timers and people with experience like you when deciding when to plant taters. However, this year, after the old timers told me to plant on Valentines day, a certain man who "wears a yellow hat" said he was waiting until March, so since I value his experience, I also waited until March 6th. They are doing great and I've hilled them three times already but I wonder if I should have listened to the old timers. The more I think about it, the man who wears the yellow hat was spot on huh? You guys are a hoot! Stay dirty my friend lol.

We watch 2-week weather forecast once we get close to our frost-free date, which is April 22nd this year. And we look at more than one long range forecast. Sometimes they still miss. We usually try to push the time by planting some tomatoes by mid April but under row cover. Try to plant green beans and sweet corn by mid April, Other warm season crops are planted by soil temp.

We are going to have a frost tomorrow night the 19th if the weather people are right. I've not planted anything that a frost would kill, still have it all in a small greenhouse. I planted taters in early January and they are beautiful and knee high. I also planted a different variety February 15th and they are about 4 to 5 inches tall. Those January potatoes should have a good chance to make a good harvest before the heat zaps them. Was in zone 8B but now in zone 9A in southeast Alabama.

Some places calculate frost not freeze date, which is anything below 36. This could explain the wide differences from the various sources of data. Here is south central texas (9a) in order to get a good crop of spring tomatoes we need to risk it (plant then protect) so we can get a few tomatoes before the severe heat hits. I start extra tomato and pepper plants to replace plants that do not make it. If the weather cooperates I give the extra to my neighbors.

Here in central Oklahoma a lot of people say to wait until either Easter or tax day. Some say they play it safe and wait until end of April or even May. That's fine for the heat loving plants that can grow all summer but it's also a gamble since the heat can take some plants out. I'm more specifically talking about tomatoes. I watch the forecast closely this time of year to decide when is the soonest I can plant tomatoes with plans to cover in case we get an unexpected freeze. I've gardened here long enough to know delaying planting tomatoes in a warmer year could mean little to no harvest. I feel safe to plant tomatoes when I don’t see anymore 30s in the forecast. I was like you and wanted hard data to go by and looked up historical temps for the last decade. Half were in March and half in April ranging from 3/4 to 4/24.

Nice discussion for any gardeners. USDA zones are averages and as always Location Location Location! We in Oklahoma are blessed to have a system of weather stations with a great system to easily get this type of information. It's called Mesonet. There's at least one for each county and most have two. They also have great info like soil temps at different depths, moisture, ph maps, rain fall, etc. Remember it's a average people! lol But the stores would be happy to sell you a tomato plant several times! lol

I planted our corn in February last year in south Alabama and we got hit with freezing temperatures down in the 20’s in March. I was for sure we lost all the corn. Well I was busy and never pulled them or started over. Went back out there later and the corn took off. That ended up being our best year of corn ever. All the big farmers around here always start their corn in February. Corn seems to do really well against the cold.

Remember that average last frost only covers 50% of the possible outcomes. I did the same thing with some lines of code and calculate 1 standard deviation which gets me a date with only a 16% chance of frost after my calculated date. A few more lines of code and I could have my own garden planting app. Oh and when I apply the standard deviation to the absolute lows from each year I'm a 5b when the new USDA map has me listed as a 7a.

Same here when we are talking about grow zones. We are in 5b, Maine, not 7a Virginia. And grow zones ONLY apply to perennials. Almost everything you grow in a veg garden is an annual. And too many people seem to think grow zones also correlate southern to northern regions, latitudes. Here's an example. I am subbed to another channel that lives on the west coast of northern England, coast line facing the Irish Sea, latitude 54. (rounded off) grow zone 8a. Moultrie GA, 8a, latitude 37, if I recall, is Zone 8a. That is a variation 17 degree difference equaling almost 1200 miles apart north to south. He has 17+ hours of daylight on the summer solstice. And yet, he can't grow sweet potatoes, basically because it isn't warm enough, long enough in the Summer. But it doesn't get any colder in the winter than Moultrie GA. I bet I just probably confused a whole bunch of people trying to make a point that makes, for most vegetables anyway, irrelevant. Sorry. And mcmpistachio, I think your coding analysis is valid, as well as Travis' is. Checking, or knowing from experience, actual recorded temps, from say the last 10 years or so is going to give a person a better chance of getting it right when it comes to gardening. That and knowing your plants, (cold hardy/tender), and soil temps. Coldest last frost date recorded for my immediate area is May 26th, yet one of the seed companies listed on this video would have me, in a normal year, trying to dig a hole on April 1st. Ain't happening. Good luck in your gardens all.

Easter date changes each year so not understanding how anyone can use Easter as a guide. Also, I suspect the reason the differences reported is because it is a probability issue. If you go to National Garden Assoc. and look up last frost for your town they use NOAA data and provide dates based on temp (light vs harder frosts) and probability, as in 10% chance will have later dates than 40% chance, therefore the variety of dates given by different sources. All those sources are correct in a way. If you are a big risk taker and it’s easy to replant if you lose then choose the 40% date and if you don’t want the risk having to replant, then go with the later, or 10% risk date.

I’m definitely basing my planting times on a few things: natures cues (are my pawpaws getting leaves back yet?) and the weather forecast as well as my own experience of good planting times from over the last few years. I learn every year a little better about how to read the cues from nature as to when it’s probably safe to plant out my beans, cucumbers, squash, melons, tomatoes and peppers, etc. the corn is still new to me but this is my second year growing it so hopefully I learned from last year. I know last year, end of May was too late for sweet corn and heat stressed the plants a bit too much. I tried a fall planting and did better but learned a few things then too. Hopefully this year will be better and more productive! Im loving planting in grow bags this year. Almost entirely. I even grew corn last year in grow bags. 🤷🏻‍♀️It just seems to work for me. My tomatoes will go in this this year too. We will see how it goes. My potatoes were planted mid February and 3rd week of February and most have sprouted up already and are growing well. Some are taking their time (they weren’t chitted though so I’m not surprised). What’s weird is I planted a sprouted russet back in December as a test or experiment and it came up in Mid February lol. It got a small frost a few days after emerging and it burned back the leaves but it’s recovered and is still growing. Crazy. I seriously have the best luck growing russets for some reason. Though to be fair, Yukon gold grows well too it just hasn’t sprouted up successfully as well as last fall. I mean the germination rate is much lower. Granted this spring I’m using store bought chitted potatoes vs the nearly 100% germ rate I got from the seed stock I got from Wood Prairie Farm so there’s that. My seed stock from that grow out wasn’t sprouting yet so I’ll just have to wait a bit longer. No doubt they’ll grow. This year is going to be fantastic for potatoes and beans and tomatoes so far it seems! Very exciting! Good luck to all you fellow gardeners out there this year! ☺️

The last frost on our property comes 2 or even 3 weeks after the last frost in town, which is only 15 minutes away. We're a couple hundred feet higher in elevation overall than the town is, and our garden is down on bottom land close to the creek. Sometimes I have frost in low-lying areas and the soil is measurably warmer up on the hill. The shadow of the house in the morning means our front yard often gets frost when the garden area, which gets good morning sun as soon as it comes up, doesn't get frosty at all. Just a couple counties away in the next big-ish city to the south, they're always at least a month ahead of us in terms of things blooming and the last frost. That's an example of "it just depends." You have to keep track of what happens on *your* place, not some average, zone, website or handbook.

Easter and Mother’s Day are moveable feasts , different days on different years. Also, if your garden in a low-lying area, it may well have a last frost date that is significantly later from someone else’s garden down the road that is higher in elevation. No gardening or government website can take into account those types of fluctuations. Keep your own records, and remember that the AVERAGE last frost date means that HALF the time the frost is later!

Thanks very much for the research and explanation. Here in central Florida we went from zone 9b to 10a and that makes the plant and seed companies put you in a "tropical zone" and it flags me when i try to order some things. We also have not been getting below 30 for the last few winters at all so i cant really use a planting calendar because i cant enter a true frost date. This is the first year i have had to consider when it is going to get too hot rather than when it will frost. Being right on the frost line every year is a real crap shoot and a 5 mph wind can take us from 40 deg to 30 deg. I took the University of Florida data for 20 years and am looking at days above 87 deg and days below 32 deg and trying to get a pattern that has consistency but it is all just a guess.

Now this year is very different!! It’s been a lot warmer!! So maybe a little sooner on planting this year!! Another idea that I have realized is that our summer growing season lasts forever up here!! Yes it gets very hot but with water most summer plants do just fine!! I am writing more and more notes down every year about gardening!! Does and don’t of gardening for me!! Thanks good video!!!!

Our spring, is so unpredictable, I was told never plant before St Patrick's day, and put out potatoes on Saint Patrick's day. You can plant cool season stuff outside, once the daffodils bloom in full. Wait til late April early May for warm weather crops,. I was also brought up to know, when the redbud tree's bloom expect a cold snap, then again when the dogwoods bloom, it will get cold again, " the last winter" will be blackberry winter when blackberries bloom. Then be prepared cause it goes to hot. Our daffodils are in full bloom , so we just planted sugar snaps, potatoes ( on St.Pattys day) and onions, , our red buds are blooming now and yep its cold again.

Okay, I saw this also that even sites for our area used historic data and erred on the side of being cautious. What I did go by was the current weather trend and the Almanac and found the probability of a late frost was low to nil. So, yes, I am also rushing to get warm season veg into my pots outside. Juggling the cool season crops that have not matured with the warm. I wanted to beat the heat and rainless summer come June which comes on too quickly. So far, still behind but plugging away!😂😊

Almanac site is the average of less than a 30% chance of frost of 32 degrees or less. It is not absolute last frost. Ours is May 9th on every site, but I know we have had frost or snow the last 3 yrs on May 20th. Which makes it hard as we can have snow on the 20th and be 90 and tornadoes by June 6. Also, my property drops 9 ft from front to back. So may not have frost in front yard but down along creek and garden have frost. So you have to know your microclimate above everything.

Travis, funny thing is as this video came out, after a couple of weeks of "false spring" warm weather, our overnight temp here is forecast to be 29 degrees (McDonough, GA zone 8A). Quite a timely video. But I "think" this may be our last freeze/frost this season. My personal recollection is our last frost can be any time from this week to the first week of April. I do remember a frost/freeze one year around April 10th though. I just watch the 10 day forecast and factor that in with my "recollection", but usually April 1st is my main target date to start getting some warm season stuff in the ground. Peppers are a few weeks later.

Travis, are you able to put both graphs and tables into google docs format and share it on the channel - this video. That would let your viewers follow along and plug in their 15 years of data and then get to see both graphs then apply your planting advice to their local dates.

We try to be "intelligent" about our planting and the last frost. Went to different sites much like you. We are in Zone 7B. Generally we plant after the first of May to be safe. Last year we got a good frost on the tenth of May??? Our nemesis this year is our tomatoes. We started them from seed 22 days ago. Now we have a lot of them in the 8-10 inch tall category. So our plan is to putting them out April 20th. Time will tell I guess!

Wish I’d watched this before I planted my tomatoes. I went off the farmers almanac, planted my tomatoes and peppers 2 days ago and now they are covered with a tarp because it is 34 out there. I’ve these plants freeze, that I have been babying since January, I will be devastated. And also hostile. Good luck with yours.

Having parthenocarpic cucumbers and squash allows us to cover plants with shade cloth or light reemay and keep out squash vine borers and pickleworm moths, both of which can torment me here in Charleston. This morning, 3/19 is the last cold air we will get, around 40. My summer garden is in full swing, tomatoes 2 feet tall and blooming, peppers with blossoms. Now the cucumbers and melons can go in. They are in 1 gallon grow bags and don't miss a beat when I transplant.

Thanks for the video. That is a lot of great data to ponder. I just wing it here in South Texas 9a-9b ish. I try and plant squash early because I battle the squash vine borer. Pesky little things that make me look like a crazy gardener. Out swatting the moths during the day only to find I never win the battle. The next thing I see, frass and my poor plants are history. If anyone has some ideas on how to beat this pest, let me know. I think I have tried all the Google suggestions.😅 I have most of my stuff in the ground, just putting on the finishing touches. Having to replant some tomatoes, one area, something keeps stripping the leaves. I planted 30 tomatoes, so it's not a big deal. I do follow one rule on planting tomatoes. Temps need to stay above 50 at night consistently for 2 weeks before I plop them in the ground. But surprise last night was 48😅. I hope you and your family have a great gardening year.

I have bad luck with borers too, here near Savannah. Last year I decided to plant just a few zucchini under a bug netting. When the flowers were ready, I hand pollinated. I managed to get a pretty good harvest! This year I’m doing that again and I’ll also be growing gourds. They are supposed to be similar to zucchini but not attractive to borers. If you like pumpkins, try Seminole. They are cucurbita muschata which are resistant to borers too.

I'm in Stone Mountain, GA. and it says my last frost date is April 1st. It sounds late, but right now at 12:59 AM it is 38 degrees. It's mostly been in the 40s and 50s at night lately, but I guess based on what I see tonight bein close to freezing it might still freeze one night before April. Speaking of potatoes; do you know where I can order good seed potatoes from? Tractor Supply won't ship them to my location.

Do you have vine borers? Every time a squash vine peeks out of the ground here (Fla panhandle), 2 or 3 borers dig in. I've tried BT in and on the plants. Nothing works. A lady in Mississippi says to put hot sauce on the entrance hole. I intend to try that or maybe inject, but so far, it's my last hope. Since you had such good advice for getting rid of nematodes, I thought you might have something as easy for this.

Danny and Wanda. Thank you for your videos. I have learned so much about raised bed gardening. We are at your age and bending over is becoming a thing of the past. I have been building treated wooden frames with tin sides and plan on adding to my beds Vego beds as we can afford them. I found you all about a year ago and working on past videos. Like you all, we have 2 properties, one in West GA and the other one in Wedowee, Alabama. The one in Alabama, has over a dozen Pecan trees on it, so big that you can't get your arms around. The other half of this property has even larger Black Walnut trees. We will probably end up on this property in a few years. Thank you again for the education and May God continue to bless you all! I live in Ohio (I know, I'm sorry too) but our weather is unpredictable. In the last few weeks, we've had a few 70 + degree days, followed by low temps and snow. I planted my radishes, and the poor things are now covered in snow. I think Ohio's weather is governed by Sibil, (those of us who are old enough to remember what movie I'm talking about know what I'm sayin) and I really think she needs to be medicated! Jus sayin.
