@nosajimiki5885
@nosajimiki5885 3 күн бұрын
@@thomassmith6232 Yes, but to elaborate on that, it was because the house, senate, and president were all majority Republican, and it was almost certain that the supreme court was going to turn over to majority Republican within the term of Lincoln. This effectively nullified the idea of checks and balances, and returned the South to the same state of Taxation without Representation that lead to the American Revolution. Throughout most of Lincoln's presidency and the Civil War, Lincoln said over and over that he had no intention of freeing the slaves and that slavery had nothing to do with the war. His original claim was that the war was about unity: that if the South were allowed to leave that it would leave America more vulnerable to the British trying to re-establish control (this is why the north was called the Union). The idea of freeing the slaves was a political move made more than 1/2 way into the war because Lincoln was losing popular support for the war; so, he used slavery as a claim of moral necessity to justify the immense loss of life the war had caused.

@@bartolhrg7609 this is reply made by @ineednochannelyoutube2651, they explain it perfectly, basically slaves was counted as 3/5 of a person "The US Constitution divides seats in the House of Representatives by the population of eligible voters of each state, but when the constitution was being written Southern Slaveholding states wanted slaves to count as population for the purposes of apportioning seats. The reasoning behind this was "I want to have more votes in congress". They compromised with northern states by saying that 3/5ths of "all other persons" would be counted. Exact quote. (they didn't want to write the word slave or slavery in the constitution) It's not a declaration that they were 3/5ths of a person, because that would have meant the south acknowledging they were people at all. It was a power grab that has come to reflect the founders deep hypocrisy on the issue of slavery, one that was tolerated in order to found the country."

Crazy part is that freeing slaves actually helped a lot of plantations because they didn't have to pay their workers much, and their workers now expanded the consumer base meaning more people purchasing from plantations

Slave owners: "what if we make the slaves do even more of their own work, like think about where to get food, clothes, housing, and make them pay taxes, do their own paperwork, and heck, MAKE THEM TRAVEL TO WORK ON THEIR OWN" We are all just worse slaves.
