When Midas met Amara, a mousy love story

Amara was a very restless mouse when she was young, always on the go and wanting to ride around on my shoulder to see the world. When I moved her into the new mousery, she became even more needy. There was something big missing in her life, she needed love desperately.
Then came Midas. I had originally given him to my intern Rachel, but he developed an ear issue common in un-neutered male mice and had to come back to me for treatment. Un-neutered males must live alone and this can be very hard on them. He was overly needy and affectionate towards humans and not good with other mice. We decided that Amara and Midas could help each other out and after neutering and careful introductions, they are now the best of friends. Midas is still affectionate towards humans but not nearly as obsessively and Amara is much calmer and no longer so restless and needy. They are such happy little mice, and even more so since Midas's mom Faye joined the group. Mice really do need to live with company :)

I’ve had mice and rats in the past, and I can certainly say that they are both very affectionate. I tend to prefer rats just because they’re bigger and tend to be a little less delicate, but if you’re not constantly anxious like me, mice are amazing pets :)

Out of all the mice I've had, there's only been a couple that weren't affectionate. They make wonderful pets, very sweet and entertaining (Oh, and I should note - very few of those were hand raised! Pet store mice, even feeders, can still be lovely, just pay attention to their personality when you're picking one out)

Ravel C I work in a small pet shop/ rescue center. Sadly we sell feeder mice. While luckily they rarely fight due to being used to large numbers, we had someone surrender six male mice to us together. They were all badly beaten up by eachother- they weren’t finding homes so sadly we had to take the worst ones and put them in with the feeders. They were so sweet though. It upsets me the one that was picking on all the others and barely had a scratch got to be the one to find a home but it wasn’t fair to the other to live in the conditions they were in, the guy let them fight so much we couldn’t even see their genitals because their back ends were so bloody and scabbed, so it was for the best... we gave them as much love as we could.

Dear Freudianslipper85 , I saw a wild tiny baby mouse outside in the grass one night and it was raining. He was by himself and was soaked. I brought him inside and gently patted him dry, setting him in a clean box with soft and warm tissues. He died in the night, yet I was glad that I could bring him in out of the wet and cold. Just thinking about, “the Golden Rule.” So nice to hear that you have helped the innocent, too. 🐾👍😊❤️

Thanks for the great video! As a child I got my 1st pet mouse under the Xmas tree in her little cage with a wheel. None of the other gifts mattered. I fell in love. Decades later I'm still blown away by the love and affection mice give to their humans. Like pet rats, they're VERY clean and super intelligent. I've spent my life hearing, "ewwwww, a mouse!! Omg a rat!! Kill it kill it! It's going to jump on me!! It has germs..." So sad. People have more germs under one fingernail than a pet rodent has on it's entire body. Love from Boston ✌🐾

I just caught 2 deer mice in my house, then 3 more. It's Michigan, so I don't have the heart to throw them outside until May. Meanwhile, ummm, I'll probably have hundreds by then so maybe I can give you a few!! (Spent more on habitat add-ons than I should have). Took about a week to socialize, now they all sleep in a pile, like puppies. Names: Pippins, Murdoch, Elvis, Mortimer (Morty) and Flo.
