So much content wouldn't be made if he wasn't released. Killers like him and the victims are content creators along with crimes news/shows/yt channels. There is demand for this kind of entertainment, so they provide. And you know what's best? They'll be remembered by history while the consumers, us, won't. In all my years of watching this kinda content I came to the realization that plenty of murders wouldn't have happened if we ignored them. What is that I hear? I think it comes down to evidence, if they couldn’t prove anything at the time, the police can’t go around locking people up just in case they do something else ….people would be jumping up and down complaining that police were overstepping the mark arresting innocent people …they cant win! I remember this case. This one infuriated me. The police actually didn't believe that lady with the 3 month old baby. She was poligraphed and she FAILED, even though she was telling the truth. John was also poligraphed and he PASSED even though he was lying. She was his first victim (pressumably/alledgedly) and after her, he started to kill his victims. If only the police believed that first victim all those other victims would still be alive today. He should have been jailed, registered as a sex offender and lost his job. In the background away from media they probably put that together but didn’t tell the media because you need to keep some thing’s private, especially when it comes to a MURDER case much less multiple if there’s public panic as well as information that only the killer should know in the media it’s so much harder to find the suspect. Of course the public wants to know but it’s best we don’t so the victims can get their justice.

Hi, I am from Eugene Oregon and I know this case well. My uncle actually worked for the highway department and lived in the Department of Transportation housing in the middle of nowhere next door to this guy. He had the sweetest Husky dog who loved EVERYONE. Everyone except John Ackroyd. They had to lock her in a bedroom whenever John came over for dinner because she would try to attack him. Always listen to your pets !!! Also, the day the daughter went missing, apparently he was going past some road construction and stopped to talk to his coworkers there. They said he had a big garbage bag (full of something) on the floor of this truck. They thought it was weird because he was notorious for keeping a clean truck and why would he have garbage inside the cab when he could have easily put it in the bed?? The area he was headed to is all lava flats. This lava is full of "tubes" or big tunnels that can go on for miles. If he put the body into one of those tubes, it might never be found. :( I don't remember meeting him but I do remember playing "hide from the bad guy" with my cousins whenever I visited them and the neighbor came home.

I've lived in Portland all my life, nearly 70 years, and the crime increase in the past few years, plus the alarming and unacceptable levels of homelessness, drug use and resulting property crimes, prostitution, shootings, robberies, etc. have changed the tenor of this beautiful city and have driven away untold numbers of long-term residents. Any extra attention we can get on this untenable situation is a good thing. We can only hope our ineffective local governance -- and police engagement -- will be forced to step up and do their friggin jobs and actually SERVE the citizenry they've been elected, or hired, to serve! Do I sound angry?? Damn right I am! Also disgusted with this ridiculous, absolutely unacceptable situation. 🤬

Since the city council has been building the sleeping pods in areas around the city. Portland used to be SO BEAUTIFUL, but I won't even go to Janzten Beach to do shopping anymore. I do missing person advocacy and the amount of indigenous women who go missing is astounding. It’s under reported by the media. They’re not making the front page like Gabby or Natalie. There’s a lack of concern for indigenous missing persons, as well as women who have mental health or addiction struggles. It’s like they’re not deemed important. I think the victim’s identities are a factor in why these highways continue to gather bodies without anyone being held accountable. But they are important, and that’s why I advocate for them like they’re my loved one. The public and the media putting pressure on law enforcement is what gets them moving.

Glad you covered this case. There’s still multiple unsolved murders in Portland, Oregon, during this era. One such case that has next to no information (even to family) is that of my first cousin once removed: Diana Marie Kuhn. Strangled to death with her own bra and found by two teenagers on December 10, 1978, in Mary S. Young State Park. I hope that eventually Diana’s killer is identified.

Thank you for giving a reference to that series. It was very captivating. I am appalled at Rachanda's mother, who not only enabled Ackroyd, but did nothing to protect her daughter. To hear the story of the girl being terrified to come back home, and her mom dragging her back home is disgusting. Detectives and a D.A,. unattached to the family are shedding tears, and she as her mother, doesn't even shed one tear. Then to top it off, Ackroyd is possibly going to plea to her murde#, and she doesn't show up at the courthouse, and leaves the whole burden to her son. There is a special place in hell for this woman.

My family moved to Sweet Home, OR in 1973, I was in the 4th grade. I remember seeing cars around town, and also in Lebanon, OR and Albany, OR (these were the next two towns, heading west from Sweet Home), with bumper stickers on them that said, "Pray for me, I drive Highway 20". We'd asked people what the bumper stickers meant and we were told they were because of legislation people wanted passed to improve the road itself, because it was a pretty scary road to drive on. Like, once you left Interstate 5 and headed east, the road became more narrow and more dangerous, the further east you went, on thru the Cascade Mountains. The stretch entering into Sweet Home itself was really narrow and ran along the Santiam River, with no railing and a sheer drop into the river on the one side, and as you headed out of Sweet Home, into the mountains, it just got worse. That being said, we all hitch hiked back then. Sweet Home was 27 miles from Albany (the next nearest 'city' to do anything in) and 97 miles from Portland. Usually, in the late 70s and early 80s, whenever there was a big rock concert in Portland, people from as far south as Eugene, OR, all the way to Portland, could be found hitchhiking to get to Portland for the show. We were never really warned of any danger out on highway 20, even when county police came across us hitchhiking out there, and gave us a ride home, if it was late at night. (yes, that was a thing that actually happened in those days) Sweet Home, and Linn County where it sits, were a pretty low key, low crime area. Cops were decent to people and people were decent to the cops. It was a different world then. I imagine, had we been told of these crimes, or knew about them, many of us girls would not have hitchhiked on Hwy 20. We would have been terrified, and probably would have felt creeped out even walking on that road, day or night. It was kind of hard to avoid Hwy 20, if you lived in Sweet Home. It was the main road that went directly thru the town, and was the only 'street' that even had any stop lights on it. (at that time, Sweet Home had a population of around 3700, which I think it probably still does, give or take) Hearing these stories now, I consider that we were really lucky that nothing terrible happened to any of us girls, but on the other hand, I'm grateful for growing up in a time where we felt so safe and trusting, living out there, in Sweet Home, OR. *I moved away from Sweet Home in 1984, when I was 18 and moved to Seattle....... just in time for the period the Green River Killer started his nightmare crimes! oh. yay.

Thank you for covering this case - well, all of them. Yes, the documentary put out by the Oregonian is a wealth of information and well done regarding HWY 20. The latest victims found has been alarming. I live in Portland, Oregon and hadn't heard much else about the case since late spring. I would assume the authorities are crossing all their T's and dotting all their I's while they have this creep in custody. Building a rock solid case. BTW - anyone who has several convictions for hurting women - should never be let out early. NEVER.

I don't know how many people know this, but my daughter was in Portland for a few years, living on the street, in active addiction, & trying to live with her mental health issues. She's been sober & home for many years now, but I traveled there a few times when she was still there, & there is a pretty big homeless kids street scene there, & they really need more help. It could be a sexual predator's dream area to hunt, so many of them are young, homeless, away from their families, high often, or needing drugs often, & good victims because of it.

I say clear the streets of them. Jail is better than living that way. I know it's the "Cruel" thing. But look at it now that they are allowed to invade the streets. Store after store closing. I have a neighbor like that. He just poisoned both of his toddlers with meth and cocaine. Both his toddlers had to be hospitalized for malnutrition, neglect, and the poisoning. The law is doing nothing, and the mother is claiming that it didn’t happen. It absolutely did. CPS is monitoring the situation. This monster is living with his kids with his mother. That’s what CPS has to offer. Unbelievable… Those kids are not gonna make it to puberty and nobody gives a damn.

This story is so close to home. Born & raised in Corvallis, Oregon. I've eaten at the Shari's, hiked, hung out all around sweet home/ Lebanon/Newport. Went to outdoor school near sister's/Cascadia. It's eerie how these Amazing lush dense forests can also hide dark secrets if criminals really want to hide them out there. Our wilderness is so dense, it would be very possible for a killer to hide their victims if they knew their way around the woods.

I'm from Oregon and I want to express that Sister's is a very small mountain town in the center of Oregon near Bend. Sisters is named after the 3 mountain peaks that are visible in the area. Hiking, skiing, and hunting are about the only activities to do there. There's a bit of a "Deliverance" feel about it. It is very beautiful but beware of monsters!

He basically said, "She wanted it". Because she had been drinking and she was a Native American they dismissed her claims and believed the white guy. It sounded they chalked it up to her sobering up and regretting her decision after the fact. There were a lot f things they ignored.

An important aspect to mention for Marlene is that she is indigenous. The cops basically told her she was a “dirty drunk Indian” & that was a factor in her case not being taken seriously. White dude vs an indigenous woman… wonder who the Oregon cops were gonna side with 🙄 She has done a gut-wrenching interview about her experience & the long lasting guilt she has because she felt like that fact she reported him was why he killed those other women & girl. To be fair, this was the seventies. Police then 99% men routinely gave almost no weight to the testimony of ANY woman charging a man with domestic violence or sexual assault. Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, being out at night, being indigenous or a woman of color, any history on her part of crime or rumored "loose morals" - any of that would undermine her testimony, lower the probability of an arrest, and set the conviction rate in a jury trial to almost zero. That was a lot of paperwork and expense for the police for a zero chance of getting a conviction.

The worst part about this developing case was when a reporter leaked that the thing that connected the four was that they had all visited the same location, but did not disclose WHERE that location WAS. Now I'm hoping it was just where he was living, but at the time I was thinking "hope that location isn't my bus stop or grocery store"

There's a really well done in-depth series called The Ghosts of Highway 20. I highly recommend it. As for the current case? 10 to 1 jumping in the river wasn't an attempt to escape, it was an attempt to ditch the drugs he currently had on him. Better to catch an evading arrest charge than a possessions charge. Especially if the allegations of trading drugs for sex are true.

I'm from 40 minutes north of Portland, and there was a big group of us, saying "it's a serial killer," very early on. The police kept denying it, then finally came around and admitted the connection. It's just crazy to hear a story, so close to home. It's not that you don't expect it to be possible, hearing these stories, you know it can happen anywhere, but it is still a surreal feeling.

I comment often about my history with addiction, being almost 4 years off heroin and 5 off meth. 🎉congratulations … I too am coming up on 4 years in January from an IV addiction on and off for 20 some years.. when I hear stories about addicted women going missing or worse, I know that could have easily been me.. these ladies did not deserve this😢I’m so grateful I got my shit together.. these past almost 4 years have been the most difficult, most challenging and most beautiful years of my life.. I’m really living my best life.. i know I’m always one bad decision away from picking up but 2 things very recently happened, 2 things I would have definitely used over.. my father passed from dementia 4 months ago and 7 weeks after that my grandmother, dads mom, died unexpectedly.. it was a lot.. but I’m doing well.. Ok, I have a massive crazy connection to this story. In 2020 the west coast fires hit my family’s area hard. Despite the best efforts of the inmate fire crews, we lost the majority of it. During the fires, out of state militias create armed roadblocks on the exit routes (they claimed the fires were started by “antifa” so they could drive out people and loot their homes - stupid, cause it was a clear environmental issue we had feared for years, and nobody was looting our burned crap). One of the armed men, a proud boy from Texas, mistook me for antifa in a park near my temporary apartment in Portland, and shot/bear maced me. That crime, along with others, landed him a 10 year prison sentence… where he is now living with this dude.

Native Oregonian here (living in Polk County), and grew up in Sweet Home. I’d never heard of either of these cases, aside from my little brother (a Polk County Sheriff) saying something about a possible serial killer around the area. Wild. I also went to school w/ a kid named Aaron Pickle in Sweet Home (hard to forget a name like that)…. Talk about close to home! A few things to note about the area and why things may have gone unreported for so long. Sweet Home is right at the bottom of the Cascade mountains, and the town itself is very small (6,000 when I was growing up there in the 90s). You have a reservoir/dam (Green Peter), Foster Lake and endless forests. It didn’t shock me at all that someone (or someone’s) could disappear and never be heard from again. Places like Sisters are even further up the mountain, and while it’s relatively small, it’s more spread out. It’s also real important to note a few other things. As nice as small town America is, Sweet Home has a VERY dark side (most small towns do). Meth and alcoholism rates are through the roof and all kinds of abuse is rampant (domestic, child, etc). Most people have known each other their entire lives and there are a lot of secrets. A lot of them work in the logging industry and are relatively low income (doesn’t make them bad), which only leads to more alcoholism/drug use and abuse. It’s a sad cycle in what could otherwise be a beautiful place.
