I remember meeting Ken Patera in Rice Lake, WI back in 1981. I was an awkward, gangly 16 year old, 6' 2" and 145 lbs., and it was a chance meeting where he and a couple of other wrestlers had pulled into the same gas station as us to refuel. The term "heel" had not come into vogue at that time, I knew Ken Patera as the elite weightlifter who had represented America well in international competition. I walked up and asked, "Excuse me, are you Ken Patera?" I saw his guard go up as he answered, "Yes," then saw the defensiveness replaced with a smile when I extended my hand and simply said, "Good luck tonight." He returned the handshake and replied, "Thank you."

Any truth to his account? He was at a bar, McDonald's, and a hotel in Wisconsin. About 45 years ago, Ken wrestled at an arena in my area. The month before a big, stupid high school kid hit him from behind when he was walking to the ring. This night the same kid, apparently, tried it again. I got home in time to hear on the 11:00 news that the kid survived but was at the local hospital. No charges filed. Lesson: the element of surprise places a heavy emphasis on SURPRISE.

Yeah, I remember the McDonald's incident 😮, and yes, it did end with the cops pulling their handguns and threatening to use deadly force. Just so you know, or may not know, with a bare handed professional fighter, deadly force can be called upon in extreme cases. If you are the cop, you better be able to prove that there was no other way of gaining control over a violent suspect, or, your ass is grass. But it has been done, especially in hand strangling cases, as it was a means of saving ones life. I'm glad that they went along with the cops. It really could have been a sad as hell incident with all comedy aside. Supposedly, Ken made the statement that, " that's what they get when you send boys to do a man's job." True story!
