That’s what life vests are for. I’m sure there are some not too bulky that will keep you afloat in the sea and that you could wear all the time when onboard. Regardless, swimming is overrated when you’re so far from any shore with nowhere to swim to 😁

I remember reading a book in the 70s called Survive the Savage Sea about a family adrift at sea. They were adrift for 37 days. In the telling of the story, when rescued, the crew on the boat could hardly get near them because of the smell coming off them. They were rubbing "fish oil" on their body because of the exposure burns.

The whaling ship Essex was sunk by a vengeful whale, (I think it was a Humpback) off the Chilean coast in the 1800s. They had little time to salvage anything from the sinking ship before abandoning it. Boarding several skiffs, the survivors were soon scattered after a storm, unlike this couple things didn't end well for most of the crew. The only survivors resorted to cannibalism and not the "let's eat dead people" variety. Herman Melville's Moby Dick is rumoured to be based upon the story. I'm new to your channel and am really enjoying playing catch-up, it's a pleasant change from listening to the better known but usually fatal outcomes prevalent on this format. Thank you.

I remember it well. I was living in Southampton at the time when it hit the news. Their boat was a Golden Hind 31 built of marine plywood and bilge keeled. Nothing wrong with this design or the hull material. A lot of people cast doubt on their story at the time as they were in remarkably good shape when they were rescued. They had no ocean sailing experience other than cruising the South coast of England. Also the fact that they were of the office workers ilk rather than the hardy outdoor adventurous types.

For the people saying that not being able to swim when you are so far its irrelevant, It's not about being able to swim to land , but to make any possible rescue easier. I can't swim, so I took the basic swimming class with the whole intent that in the case an emergency I could swim or propel myself a couple of feet closer. If there its a rescue or rope, could i at least get close enough to hold to it. I still can't swim, because it was only basic but I can half ass myself closer by about 20ish feet.
