My ex's family were Scottish, so we went over for the holidays over Christmas/New Year's, and it's where i first heard the bagpipes played live, in a more original context than pop culture represents, and i bawled like a baby, it was so beautiful. We went to Hogmanay in Edinburgh, and i had whiskey for the first time (technically 14 whiskeys). :) That was the same trip where i discovered UK Christmas music like "Stop the Cavalry" "Mary's Boy Child" "I Wish it Could Be Christmas Every Day" and so much more awesome modern/pop holiday tunes. It's also when i discovered how much the Scottish love to sing, and they know the words to everything. Some of my fave memories are of singing karaoke with strangers in Forfar.

It's seriously never too late. A good partner or trusted friend who could tend to your basics/business for even 10 days would give you a dream journey, honestly! The bluish-purple of the sky, the sweet dusty smell of the fields of yellow flowers in the summer (don't know what plant?), and even the acoustics of a different landscape or the massive, resonant cathedrals with traditional choral music or their majestic bells... You can do it!! :) @@viscache1

Every story about Scotland starts with "It's Complicated". It's the explanation I use when friends and family ask why I've been a visitor for going on 50 years although the family that have traveled there with me "get it". ( It's not really that complicated ). Merry Christmas and Happy Hogmanay Robert to you and your Family!

I was a child in 1950’s Scotland and it very much was a working day for most people. We children has stockings and we did have gifts from Father Christmas and our close family. My father’s young cousin died and his funeral was on Christmas Day 1951. It all seems so strange compared to how things are done now but it was alway spoken as, Christmas for the children and New Year for the adults. Both still feature lots of family and friends and lovely food and drink and we in Scotland have public holidays for both.

Very similar memories. My father had a shop and his “January” Sale started on Boxing Day, which wasn’t a public holiday and didn’t register much with a lot of Scots - I remember my mother telling me it was “an English thing, I suppose”! And though many people did have Christmas Day (civil servants, retail etc) some didn’t - eg trades; my uncle was a joiner and arrived for Christmas dinner in his brown overalls, straight from a building site, and got changed.

😂 Merry Yule and Happy New Year when it comes Emma 🙂
@Wotsitorlabart
@Wotsitorlabart Жыл бұрын
@@Emma-Jayne It's not pagan in the slightest. The earliest reference to burning a log at Christmas is from Christian Germany in 1184 and subsequent medieval references to it are to be found there. By the 19th century its range had extended outwards and it could be seen to ring Germany - France, Italian Alps, Serbia and most parts of Northern Europe. But of course you can enjoy it as part of your pagan tradition if you so wish.
@Emma-Jayne
@Emma-Jayne Жыл бұрын
@@Wotsitorlabart I am aware of what I can enjoy and not. However it is a pagan Scandinavian celebration for winter solstice. Christians may well have highjacked it but everything they highjacked was pagan in origin. The dates are lost to us from its earliest and original point, so cannot be singled to your date I’m afraid. However you enjoy your Christmas as you wish to. 😊

Christmas celebrations were banned in New York until 1750. Catholic priests were forbidden to enter New York on pain of death until 1720. As late as 1789 almost no one could be seen in New York putting so much as a Christmas wreath on a door. It was considered a "papist" conspiracy. Such were the attitudes of the era.

I'm celebrating everything anyone will let me celebrate. Hanukkah, ok. Christmas, sure. Saint Nicholas Day, cool. Winter Solstice/Yule, I celebrate Summer Solstice so this is a no-brainer, Santa Lucia, I'm not Scandinavian but it sounds like fun. Saturnalia, toga toga toga! Festivus, who doesn't like meatloaf, airing of grievances, and feats of strength? Kwanza, I'd love to learn more and I bet the food is spectacular. My housemate stopped celebrating Christmas when she discovered its pagan origins. Like who doesn’t know that? Now she’s unhappy (and so is her family) because she misses it! You can still do the traditional things with no pretense that it’s connected to Jesus, to enjoy family time. She also says it’s ‘too commercial’- again, you don’t have to make it like that in your own home.
