But at any rate, they managed to create a scene of sheer perfection--IMO--of emotion, music, cinematography. The slow hugs, the tears, the smiles, the ship into the setting sun of the western sea all tied together with the beautiful score of Howard Shore makes this scene one of my favorites in the trilogy. Kudos to Elijah, Sean, Dominic, and Billy. You all nailed it!

Fun Lore Fact: Gandalf was taking the Hobbits to the eagles to assist in flying straight to Mordor. Fighting the Balrog was NOT apart of the plan, let alone going through the Mines to begin with. The path was left for Frodo to choose, and if he had chosen different tly, it would not have been the "right path", and all would have failed.

TBH, even decades later, I'm still unsure as to how they didn't notice this. I mean, in some cases when a sunset is required or some other time-critical moment factors in, it's understandable that when you MUST rush... well, luck is key. But when you're already doing reshoots, there's a heightened sense to get things correct.

Acting is difficult. For the 30+ years I spent doing it, no matter how often I attempted to explain just how exhausting it could be, everyone looked at me with haughty disdain. 🙄 It's just more verification that even when people literally do *not* know a single thing about a subject or endeavor, they're still perfectly happy to make instant internet assessments about it, "calling the shots" as if they're an adept expert. It's embarrassing.

People are arguing in the comments over who is really to blame for this mistake, but I think what we should really get out of this is how dedicated the cast and the crew were to making the best possible movie. On a production of such scale and complexity mistakes will inevitably happen, and I feel like in many other movies a lot of mistakes stay in just because it's a pain to re-do it.

There are a LOT of costumes in Lord of the Rings. Lots of tiny details. Remember too that they had FOUR units filming at the SAME TIME! So while one studio is kitted out for Lothlorien and all the elves, down the hall is Bilbos birthday with a hundred hobbits all with their own costumes. And miles away the helicopter team is getting shots of black riders chasing a stunt double. All while Peter Jackson is filming the main cast doing something totally different Really it's up to the actor to WEAR their costume

It's kinda weird that this scene was in the middle of principle photography instead of the last day or week of shooting, consindering it'd be more appropiate with knowing this is the end, we have to say goodbye to my fellow actors, so it would put the better in the mood and give the right emotion for the scene. But it ultimatley didn't matter because they nailed it. I feel sorry for those guys to having to redo it twice because of custom misses done by Sean Astin and by technical difficulty (it wasn't ultimately the focus puller's fault, though it might seem to be).
@cheydinal5401
@cheydinal5401 5 ай бұрын
Tbh based on some of the shots they showed here, it does seem like they were better on the first day of shooting I think the biggest issue for the actors wasn't even so much that it would be emotionally taxing in and of itself, but also that they knew they wouldn't be able to capture that raw emotion again after having done like a 1-minute sequence for an entire day the 2 days before. It's like, imagine some actual really emotional moment in your actual personal life, and imagine reliving that for sort of 48 hours straight, at that point you've just become completely numb to it and any emotion you're showing is just a superficial act

It's not that weird. Actors get tired. After two years of constant filming they arent going to have the same energy. Coupled with that are logistical issues. The four hobbits are together for most of Fellowship, but then are in completely separate scenes for almost two full movies. They only get together for the end in Hobbiton and the Grey Havens. So you want to get this filmed while everyone is together with their Shire outfits
@OuterEdgeOutpost
@OuterEdgeOutpost 5 ай бұрын
I agree, it always bugs me how chaotic they are with the shooting schedules. I'm not an actor, but it just seems like you'd get more authentic performances if you tried to shoot at least the really important scenes in the right sequence. All creative collaborations develop over time, people get a better feel for what they're doing, they develop camaraderie, etc, so it's inevitable that the performances will gain richness over the course of filming. It just seems like good practice to plan your schedule with that in mind.

It's the focus puller (or first assistant camera) whose job it is to maintain focus by adjusting it according to measurements and marks they made beforehand. However only the camera operator who is looking through the viewfinder will see if it's actually in focus or not. And it's possible for the camera operator to not notice if it's only slightly out of focus, because they are looking through the tiny viewfinder and not seeing it on a big screen. In the time of shooting on film, you would not see if it was out of focus until the film was developed. Nowadays shooting digital you will notice right away.

The missing vest should've been noticed by the script supervisor and costumes, it's not an actor's job to to make sure they look the same. The second, as mentioned in the comment above, is the focus puller's (1st AC's) job - when shooting on film, you really only get to see the shots properly once the film is developed. It used to be so that at the end of each day the director, DP, Producer etc would watch the dailies/rushes from that day, which was the film they shot that was immediately developed and sent for review on a big screen.

And nobody... NOBODY at all noticed? No set-checker? No director? None of the other actors? Or make-up artists? Or even the car-park attendant? I find it really difficult to believe that of all the many people associated with the making of the movie, not ONE person said "I see Sean's not wearing his vest". C'mon.

last time I watched I noticed that even after all of the reshoots, Sam still doesn’t have his vest on in his last two shots of the scene 🥲

That would be the fault of their script supervisor/continuity.

I guess the first time, Sean wasn't fully invested in the part. Sorry. I'll show myself out.
