SPOILER It's now been nearly two weeks since the sale of this console, and we seem to be all good! 😁😁

Not watched it all yet, but credit to you mate - paying for postage, sending out a new model etc. you’ll still be a trusted seller👊🏼

Usually how sellers respond to a dud is what makes the difference. The other chip not having a thermal pad may have been the issue, but shit happens. I recently bought a drive which was DOA and within a day I had a return slip and 3 days later a working drive. Electronics can be fickle working before sending it out then just going "nope" once it arrives.

Joey's honesty is S tier. He'll always make it right!
@MrWisski9 сағат бұрын
I'd say, maybe because you forgot the thermal pad, the chip heated just a *bit* much. That might have caused an already weakened solder ball to crack. It'd be interesting to see if the chip works in a replacement board. Maybe a reflow could have solved the problem?

HUGE amount of respect for your honourable ebay selling. Sadly there are fewer and fewer sellers like you nowadays and it's become a battle to get sellers to stand behind the products they sell. Thank you for being one of the good ones.

Good man Joey, absolute perfection to handle the situation. 3:42 - TheCod3r's name popping up, sound British lad, was happy to see that too. Happy days (with satisfactory struggle). Keep up the good work 👍

Easy for me to say this sitting here but personally I would of reflowed the chip again and tested before replacing it. Just in case it was a bad joint that you couldnt see. Fingers crossed it stays working this time for you.

Hi Joe, I bought one of your repaired Nintendo switch before sommer vacation last year. It still works perfectly and I’m very happy of my purchase.
@mooseblaster7 сағат бұрын
I'm guessing it could also have been a cold solder joint under the chip you replaced, and a couple of hot/cold stress cycles caused the connection to crack. Because of the nature of the repair, it is impossible to say. Maybe next time you have an SSD fault, give that old chip a test? To be honest, I'm starting to wonder with the number of faults re SSDs that come up, that cold joints caused by thermal cycles may be quite a common occurrence, rather than them all being bad chips?

It really is a heart sinking feeling when that happens. Only ever had it happen with a PS2 slim that arrived at the buyer and overheated within 20 minutes. I felt like a right bastard but the buyer was super nice and I simply sent another one and they sent theirs back. Even so it's a terrible feeling, even more so with something as expensive as a PS5 I imagine.

Is it camera angle or did the board look bowed under the chip?

I had that same thought

I was going to ask that same question, i paused it at that point and it does look a bit bowed under the chip. Maybe they all are?

i think is just a optical illusion, because the rest looks fine it seems

Cool content. Very informative. I don't even own a ps5 but I find it interesting. I love to learn more about electronics.
@dimerin38828 сағат бұрын
It was likely just an unfortunate situation. Perhaps there was a weak or cold joint on the solder pad beneath the SSD controller, and during shipping, the console might have experienced a minor shock, causing the issue. Well done Joey for this second attempt!
@babyherc1000old7 сағат бұрын
Sometimes things shake around in shipping or it was just a failing chip already. Who knows. Great video!
@zaku89544 сағат бұрын
Maybe it was a issue with some solder balls, a little shake while in postage broke some... That would be my guess
@qshelby67199 сағат бұрын
Hey Joey, good sport on your side there mate hats off! That fault though, could it be because the ssd chip overheated as you left it without the thermal putty? That could be an issue if there isn’t any putty on the metal piece where the chip comes in contact.
@JoeyDoesTech9 сағат бұрын
Exactly what I thought bud. Replaced it this time with some thick stuff just in case! :)
@qshelby67199 сағат бұрын
@ You might wanna consider stocking up on some less dry putty for an even distribution. Good luck to you my friend, much love!
@antonjansenvanrensburg41459 сағат бұрын
the previous chip if i remember correctly you reballed a few times, maybe it got a bit damaged with the heat cycles and decided that its done when it got too the customer.

2 failed controllers seems suspect. It's possible the second one just needed reflowed, though.
@TreyWait8 сағат бұрын
My guess as to what caused the failure - USB C fast charging the new controller that the customer plugged in with maybe a side helping of the lack of a thermal pad. Try charging a dead controller from the USB C port.
@TheSpotify955 сағат бұрын
To be honest, this is exactly why it is a terrible idea to *solder* your main storage into place on the motherboard! Because if the SSD Controller, or the SSD Chips, fail, then you're in for a world of pain and bother. In my opinion the Playstation 5 should have had two NVMe slots, one with an SSD from the factory (like how the PS4 had a 2.5in HDD) and one as an expansion bay whereby you can add more storage.
@TheChiro20005 сағат бұрын
Yeah but money...
@fabini145 сағат бұрын
If it fail again, just reflow it and the ssd chip close to the controler, pretty sure that is bad conection.
@SiAnon9 сағат бұрын
Pack it all up for posting then kick and throw it round your house. This will simulate the journey it took. You know they chucked it at least once lol
@shakangel6666 сағат бұрын
Maybe check the stability of the voltages using an oscilloscope. Dirty voltage or incorrectly filtered voltage may stress the SSD controller

Could have been one solder ball that broke in transit to the customer or it could have just been a bug in the matrix that caused it.

This is why I’m so wary of selling anything on eBay that I’ve repaired. Not so much because I don’t trust my own repairs, more because there’s so many numpties on eBay. To be fair my experience is born out of buying crap that other people have tried to unsuccessfully repair and then sold as “untested”. Right now I’ve got three working switch lites and a couple of switches I actually want to sell but can’t be doing with the hassle that comes with selling on eBay. It doesn’t help that eBay tends to settle everything in favour of the buyer regardless of the reason for return

@arch110724 минут бұрын
the cmos battery can clearly be seen in the pcb on the lower right corner when he was checking the pcb, at 10:25 you can clearly see that battery
@ChosesinWon4 сағат бұрын
Do you really send them another PS5 and then fix that one and send it back? If they are both disc series, then why not let the second one you sent them be the one they keep and you just sell that one again? Seems like lot of wasted shipping. Considering shipping may have been the cause of the failure in the first place.

Attempt 42 of asking Joey for his Fluke Multimeter
@muerteirc9 сағат бұрын
Great customer service :) but use a bit less flux. You are in europe your solderpaste contains flux. Dont use alcohol to clean flux. Use flux cleaner. And the reason for the chip failure is most likely esd damage. Please use a grounding mat and esd bracelett. Please use clean esd gloves. If they are dirty they dont work and actually makes the possibility for esd damage greater. And please cut down on the thermalpaste also. And it would be fun to see you use the multimeter as it supposed to be used when searching for errors on the board. You are a charismatic and good teacher, and i think people really could learn a lot from you.
