Thanks, friend Nelson!! "Let a person examine himself, then, and SO EAT of the bread AND DRINK of the cup." - the command is to get right and TAKE. Not avoid taking. Too many IMHO go the easy route and simply avoid. It is a false piety. I loved "not view perfection as the requirement for taking communion"

In my church, we are taught about the Passover (Holy Communion). We are given a chance to examine ourselves in silence and confess our wrongdoings in silence.

Wow, just wow. So many people on here “remembering their sins” and not remembering Christ during communion. The context of 1 Corinthians was the people of Corinth fighting and over indulging in food and wine, and not even considering Christ during the gathering. It’s hard to do that in our context with a small wafer and thimble of grape juice. Most Christians treat communion like a funeral service instead of a remembrance and celebration of the finished work of Christ. That fact that we sin and have weakness is all the more reason to take communion.

One who confesses and renounces one's sin will find mercy, Proverbs 28:13. Just because the flesh does not like it does not make one a hypocrite. Besides, in this kind of situation, if you are worried about becoming a fraud, are you not a fraud already?

In my church, we have a time of reflection and confession before communion. Christ says to do this often. It is the Lord’s table. Only those who have been instructed and believe that Jesus is present and the bread and wine are both his body and blood, but the bread and wine are still bread and wine are welcome. It is only through Jesus death and resurrection that we are worthy to receive communion, not by anything we have done.

In the Seventh Day Adventist Church some parents, including mine, don't let their children partake in communion until they have been baptized. We don't baptize babies. From time to time my mom would let me participate before I got baptized as I got older because I had some knowledge of what was good and bad. But the reason I got baptized when I was either 11 or 12 years old was because I wanted to participate in communion rather than give my life to Christ. Sometimes I ask if I should be rebaptized because of that, but my parents and many others say I don't need to because I know better and my baptism was me being born again.

Question: Wasn't Paul talking about the passover meal? I cannot find a biblical reference for what we call "taking communion." And certainly the doctrine of the wafer and wine literally becoming blood and flesh is pure error.
@sawyerwhited6802

I believe Paul was talking about the Passover meal as well. You would think if gentiles were to take "communion" there would be some detailed instructions in the Bible on how to go about this, like Passover instructions in Exodus.

@sawyerwhited6802

@@dewman7477 It was the Passover meal. If this was a new "supper" that Gentiles were to observe surely God would have given specific instructions on how to do it. What we have now is all the different denominations trying to guess on how to do it, God is not the author of confusion. Jn 4:24 states we are to worship in spirit & truth, not with physical rituals.

There is nothing but Grace in the heart of God towards us, therefore our hearts must be established by His Grace. There is nothing we can do, or not do, that changes the way God feels about us. Win win situation. This does not give us a license to sin, but if we do sin we have Jesus, an Advocate with The Father, and God’s feelings about us has not changed.

1 Cor 11:27-31 has some missing context that clears this up completely. If you go back to vs 21, you will find out why the scripture says not to eat and drink in an unworthy manner and you will find out why it says to eat and drink while being mindful of the body. People were meeting to have communion, but some were greedy. They ate the bread, as if they didnt care if there was anything left for others and they did the same with the wine. Some were even getting drunk. I have heard this scripture being twisted for years, but it isnt some mystical thing. The chapter explains everything.

The communion is to be taken as often as you wish to do this and do this in remenbrance of the Lord. The unworthiness is not talking about sin in the life of the believer, it is talking about the manner in which you take communion. Today, in church, we have a sip of wine or grape juice and a morsel of bread. This was not so in the first century. Bread and wine was actually expensive, so the church used to put on the bread and wine. People would come and break bread together. But certain few of the Corinthian church would come and gluttonly eat the bread and drink the wine. I personally think they were already sick and thought if they gluttonously ate and drank the Lord's 'body and blood' that they would be healed but they should examine themselves with their behaviour, leaving nothing for others. When communion is to shared by eating and drinking together, we wait for each other. Paul said it was an unworthy manner in which they took communion. In verse 33, Paul said to eat and drink at home. 1 Corinthians 11:24-34 NKJV
@bradharford6052
@bradharford6052 Ай бұрын
It seems to me that Paul is dealing with a situation where many were not eating and drinking in remembrance of the Lord's death but being inconsiderate of their brothers and sisters and eating and drinking for their own enjoyment. Having "sin" in one's life or needing ministry is the very time that one needs communion most. Our worthiness has nothing to do with confessed or confessed sin. Our worthiness has been imputed to us by God. I think the traditional understanding of these verses is upside down. If you have issues in your life, run to the Lord's table, not from it.

This is wrong. Does not say unworthy. Says unworthily. That is an adverb, not an adjective. Means how you take it. Not what shape you are in. Discerning the Lord’s Body. Seeing the Lord’s Body. Realizing what you are doing.

The issues that the catholic church has: 1)Mary saved us from anything. 2) Repeating prayers vainly over and over is biblically wrong. 3) worshipping saints is wrong as only God should be worshipped. 4) confessing to man was finished when Jesus died on the cross. 5) infant baptism is useless as the baby has no ability to understand what baptism is for.

@@MuffinMan829All your points got nothing to do with this video, but sure 1) not what the church teaches 2) the lords prayer is repetitive too, the the key word is _vain_ 3) you don't know what to worship means, we don't do that 4) _confess your sins to one another_ (James) 5) baptism saves (Peter) and forgives sin (Acts), whole households were baptized (Acts, I Corinthians), it is the sign of the new covenant (Colossians) and the sign of the old covenant was circumcision performed even on infants.

Accountable Christians are supposed to partake in the Lord's supper every Sunday in remembrance of His broken body and His spilled blood that brought about His New Covenant. He instituted this Holy event with one loaf and one cup of unfermented wine. Tiny cups and tiny wafers are NOT what He and His disciples used and the Bible makes this abundantly clear.
