I remember when this show was new, and you're right that Cartman was not the fan favorite. Kenny was because the main hook of the show was that there was a character who dies in every episode. That was really what got this show off the ground. No Kenny, and this show would have been canceled immediately imo, because it looked really bad.

There was no "looks bad = bad" this was "any publicity is good publicity" Having 8 year old swearing and confronting pop culture references was huge. It's why Slim Shady did so well. Em took what was happening and brought it into our homes via slaughtering pop culture references with no fear of blowback. South Park did for comedy central what Eminem did for Dr Dre. They brought it to our homes.

I think what I like about Token is that he himself isn't a black stereotype, it's everyone on the outside looking in that pins the generalizations on him and his family. Most shows would just create an offensively stereotypical black character, and then complain when the shows black demographic voiced their disappointment. I found myself relating a lot to Token when I was a kid. Living in a predominantly white town, I would get ignorant questions and assumptions pushed on me all the time, when all I wanted to do was just exist like everyone else.
