*"Wicked" Movie Review: A Good Adaptation That Falls Short of Greatness*
In this video, we dive into *Wicked*'s long-anticipated leap from stage to screen-a film that brings plenty of charm but struggles to capture the cinematic magic of *The Wizard of Oz*. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande give it their all, delivering powerhouse performances alongside a delightful Jonathan Bailey, but even their star power can’t completely overcome the movie's shortcomings.
While the heart of the source material still shines through, the film leans heavily on the strength of its Broadway roots, often resting on its laurels instead of elevating itself into something truly spectacular. The visuals lack the vibrance and creativity that made The Wizard of Oz timeless, leaving fans yearning for a bit more wonder.
That said, some moments absolutely soar-like Defying Gravity*, a showstopper that hits all the right emotional beats despite its somewhat clunky visual execution. As a pop musical adaptation, *Wicked lands among the better ones, but its missed opportunities and reliance on the source material leave it falling just shy of greatness.
Is it worth the watch? Absolutely. But does it leave us wishing for a bit more magic? You bet. Griffin (‪@griffschiller‬) gives you his Wicked review and explains why Wicked is not good, the huge problem with Wicked, why Wicked is a gross looking movie, why Wicked fails, and Wicked explained in this analysis of Wicked. Enjoy this Wicked ending explained and Wicked video essay.

I don't think it's really fair to call all film critique "complaining" or like the other person said "pointless". There are definitely a lot of schmucks on youtube who bitch and moan about everything, but this video was largely positive and the criticisms were constructive. Young filmmakers can learn a lot from film critique. It's definitely understandable if you don't want to hear people make critiques of aspects of movies you don't care about, but just don't watch film criticism.

I personally thought the dialogue breaks between songs was important and powerful. It allowed the film to focus on being a film first and a musical second. The stakes are raised well with them especially in the finale. The story also felt less like a part one and more like a conclusive narrative on it's own with a crescendo of a conclusion that left me speechless. Jon Chu was smart to do this as he wanted to tell a complete narrative with Act 1 and and actually develop the characters and make the story more powerful in the process. He did exactly that IMO and the finale was PERFECTLY EXECUTED IMO.

200% agreed. I had no concept of what Wicked was when I entered the cinema; my husband loves the musical and refused to spoil anything for me. The movie felt perfectly paced, it delivered the story with a lot of impact, and it made me a lifelong Wicked fan from just one viewing of a movie I was very "meh" about at first. I fell in love with Elphaba and Glinda. The conclusion is perfect where it is, and it made me buy tickets to see Wicked live in a couple months even though they were $250 each.

I had no idea people were complaining about the colour grading until two days ago and I watched it over two weeks ago. I would have agreed if someone had said that the colours weren't especially intense, but in my mind it was definitely a colourful film, and the grade was solid. I can kind of understand people feeling like it's a weird choice given that The Wizard of Oz film has such incredibly vibrant colours, but Wicked is not The Wizard of Oz. It isn't meant to be the same as The Wizard of Oz, it provides a complicating alternative perspective of the story, and so it should have a grade that matches that more complicated, bitter reality over the pure bubblegum fantasy of Wizard of Oz where the colours pop almost aggressively. Yes, compared to 1939's The Wizard Of Oz, Wicked's colours are washed out, but why would you compare it to The Wizard Of Oz? The musical adaptation of Wicked is definitely a lot closer to the 1939 take on Oz than it's much darker source material, but I really think it would be a disservice to the story of Wicked (entirely based on adding heavy emotional complexity into the most classic fairytale-style Oz book) to give it the same vibrant mood palette of what was a true adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, a film that kept the simplicity that made the book a modern fairytale and which was really intended to bring the fantasy to life more than anything else. Content dictates form, and so if the themes and aims of these films are different, you wouldn't expect or even want their stylistic elements to be the same.

You hit the nail on the head. Defying gravity should’ve been visually and emotionally singular. By splitting the focus, the film lost some of the visceral “hell yes!” energy that makes the song such a show-stopping anthem. It’s like they didn’t trust the audience to fully feel the weight of her rebellion without adding a flashback, which honestly wasn’t necessary. Sometimes, less is more, and staying in the moment would have amplified her declaration tenfold.

The thing with the cuts in defying Gravity, showing the soldiers, is that you wouldn't need that in a stage play. You'd just see them running onto the stage and they stay there. No need to cut away to show that they're really being pursued. Here, if they didn't cut and just pop up, or didn't do anything till they got done with the song, that'd feel weird, considering EVERY other song is essentially "Real time". Everyone that's around the song is a part of the song. The soldiers need to actually be around them when we reach that crescendo, when they capture Glinda, and the last we'd see them otherwise, is before they used the hot air balloon to get some space and lock themselves in that tower. Her falling out of the tower on the other hand didn't need to be THAT long, or even really happen. She already enchanted the broom, and didn't really need the whole "Young self in the mirror" thing. The entire point of the song itself is that she's resolved to doing what she believes is right already. This honestly made no sense, whereas, I see no problem with cutting to show the soldiers catching up.

the falling part imo, was needed because it builds up to that battle cry as she remembers all the times she had to hide herself, her powers and everything she stands for when she was young. that moment was her accepting the fact that she will not tolerate the disrespect as she knows shes in the right and she is powerful and knows she can make a difference if only she owns it.

@@kristianm3181like the best thing I can say about this film is the fact that it's a dark tone. The film is meant to look grey and very washed out. The vibrant colors only stand out as much as they do, especially in the emerald City. The film has a very dark tone and keeps to that, especially when it comes to the style. The film looks the way it does because it was intentional. This is where everything else from a filmmaking perspective comes into play. If the Wizard of Oz was colorful and vibrant, Wicked is colorful and vibrant only when we get to the emerald City cuz of the film has a darker tone and more heavy subject matter that offsets the colors of the film. I thought it was a stylistic choice and in this aesthetic choice that works spectacularly.

I didn't think the colors looked bad in the theater, but perhaps not as vibrant as the original. I thought the lighting did not look good. So many shots were mostly backlit, and not in like a stylized way. Especially the scene in the library. It looked like it had been shot properly backlit, like silhouetted, and then someone boosted the shadows to the roof in post. It also seemed like in an almost majority of interior shots where you would want to see the characters faces, the faces were the least lit part of the shot.

as someone who did watch the musical, i greatly enjoyed the film... up until defying gravity. I cant say your critiques are wrong, but i disagree with all of them EXCEPT how much they cut up defying gravity. They take the show stopping song leading into intermission and cut it up so much that it cant build any momentum musically. I can accept an extended (but not excessive) gap after the bickering and before the climax of "if you care to find me", but the balloon was completely and utterly unnecessary. The announcement to all of oz and the character reactions should have either led into the song, or been the resolution after the fact as elphaba flies off, not crammed in the middle so loudly that you have to split your attention between the power of elphaba's realization and the context of the world condemning her. "id sooner buy defying gravity" is really the point of no return. You cant cut the song once elphaba makes that realization unless you are pausing for dramatic effect before she declares war on oz, and ONLY for dramatic effect. Meanwhile, i felt the extra time was generally spent well in the rest of the movie, especially with the context that act 2 takes place during the events of the wizard of oz. Minor spoiler alert for part 2 i guess, but unless they change something for the movies, shiz doesnt have any impact on act 2 beyond the cause and effect of act 1. Elphaba is a fugitive, Glinda is a figure head, and the other important characters have a much more spoiler-y role to play than simply being elphy's classmates.

Comedies and Horror movies especially I think have suffered from digital - for example I watched both 'Totally Killer' and 'Ghosted' last year and it just looked like cheap fan films compared to movies in the same genres and budget levels shot on 35 like 'Strange Darling' and 'Mr & Mrs Smith,' that's why I was so grateful to see 35 make a big comeback this year with 'Twisters,' 'Challengers,' 'Anora,' 'Nosferatu,' 'The Brutalist,' 'Cuckoo,' 'Maria,' 'Strange Darling,' 'The 'Bikeriders' and the upcoming 'The Battle of Baktan Cross' from PTA next year.

This is it - this is the video that gets me to unsubscribe. I am now realizing that I had been putting my FAITH into your opinions about movies I did not know, assuming that you knew better than me and that your opinions were expressed in good faith, but this is the first time you talk about a movie and a topic that I know intimately, and it makes it extremely obvious that your opinion is not something I should ever trust again. Did you actually EVER watch The Wizard of Oz? It is desaturated, yet it piles up all the colors it can on the same screen, which makes it simultaneously very dull-looking and very confused due to dozens of clashing colors forced next to each other with no care for color theory, purely because "This is a technicolor movie, so we need more colors! MORE COLORS!!!" But because of the terrible quality of cameras at the time, the colors are all bland. Shot composition sits somewhere between mediocre and bad, and the acting and plot alike are just plain bad. The Wizard of Oz is remembered as a very colorful, beautiful movie because it stood out amongst a sea of black-and-white garbage, but by today's standards, The Wizard of Oz is a dull and very ugly movie. I did not grow up with The Wizard of Oz, clearly as opposed to you, and having watched that movie for the first time ever in preparation of watching Wicked with my Oz-loving husband, I can tell you that it looks bad when discovered today. I only tolerated the visuals of The Wizard of Oz because I know it's a very old movie and I judged it by the standards of a time where any color on a screen was a revolution. Wicked did today what The Wizard of Oz did back in its time - by the standards of today's cinema, it looks drop dead gorgeous, using color theory to the fullest, it is a visual feast with interesting characters with a plot that's worth following. It saturates the colors that need to be saturated and knows how to use light beyond just shining a spotlight in a whole scene, like in The Wizard of Oz. Wicked does not shove every color in a bag and shake it, like The Wizard of Oz does; it selects its colors very carefully to make every scene pop AND be meaningful. Pay attention to the greens and the pinks - pink flowers among bright green foliage, for instance - and pink and green lighting used to enhance scenes, like the masterful ambient lighting in the OzDust scene. In this video, you show clips of a gorgeous parade of colors and beautifully-curated shots in Wicked and you keep saying it looks dogsh*t. And then you share blurry, pixelated, amateurishly lit, desaturated shots from The Wizard of Oz and you tell us they look gorgeous. Sorry, but we all have eyes. We can plainly see that you're lying as you speak, because you call a visual masterpiece fugly and a "good for its time, bad by today's standards" movie gorgeous. I am a professional artist, I know color theory. I did not care about Oz or Wicked until I watched this movie, which I only did to make my husband happy. Since I watched Wicked, I have been collecting stills from it, and I have over 200 shots that all look like paintings I'd be proud to expose in a museum. I spent the last few weeks geeking out with other professional artists about the insanely good colors in Wicked. This video killed all respect I had for you, man.

Yeah I agree. And also he totally disregarded Jon Chu's vision. I agree that in some parts that the lighting could be better but it's not badly directly. Wicked is different from the Wizard of Oz because one is the reality of the world and one is the whimsical propaganda that was shown to Dorothy and the audience for years. That's why the color grading makes sense to me. And even if it could have been done better I didn't find it bad in my local movie theater. It looked beautiful especially when it came to emerald city part.

I agree, this review was all over the map and contradicted itself many times. Also I thought Wicked looked amazing, I don’t know why everyone has decided they’re film editors and latched onto the phrase “color grading” as if they knew it prior to last week. and all that bitching and moaning, only for him to say “I thought it was a good movie” like ok then why did you just spend 30 minutes railing about minuscule details? At that point he’s just actively trying to be miserable.

Exactly. The film looks the way it does because it's a dark toned film, offsetting the happy and playful tone of the wizard of Oz. Every element blends together and the practical sets work so much better. Minimal CGI looks great and used to compliment the power of the filmmaking. People need to shut up about the color grading and the cinematography which I couldn't find fault in and everyone I know doesn't have an issue with it. The stunts are real and it all fits together fantastically.

This comment section hasn’t learned what opinions are? It’s his opinion, this is his take on wicked, not yours. I for one understand what he is saying, it’s a well done movie which I personally love. But just because I Love it doesn’t mean it can’t have any issues. The colors are muted, the pacing could be a little better, and some characters could be better fleshed out. These criticisms are simply just that. It’s a criticism, and that doesn’t mean the movie is bad, it just means it’s flawed. (Which pretty much every movie is)
@Cina-nae
@Cina-nae Ай бұрын
Despite the comments, I actually understand what you're saying. You didn't really say anything wrong and I agree there is valid criticism. You can like the film and still think it could have been better. I think this can be summed up with the fact that people thought this film had a lot of CGI. I saw an early release and my one comment was that the world seemed overly CGI, this even became so much of a conversation online that the Wicked team released a statement and footage that showed that the world was all real created sets. So if there is actually just a little CGI in this film...why does it feel like it's over the top?? It's the color grading, the overly glossy look, and the way they choose to edit the film. John M Chu is a director that continues to do this and this isn't the first time people have criticized his directing - to me, it feels like he doesn't want to make improvements. It's a problem and it means that the film will age itself quite quickly. In five years this film will look old. Did Wicked have an amazing story, great acting, and amazing singing? YES BUT that does not negate that it could look better. It's got such a modern look to it and that is a problem. However, I hope and wonder if this will change when part 2 is released? Maybe the world will be less glossy and bright now that we have realized the wizard is a con man???? I'm just speculating.

This is probably the only movie where I've been grateful for my aging eyes. One of the less common (or less talked about) symptoms of aging eyes is that they can adjust to light less quickly than they did when we were younger. So essentially, everything with a bright light on it looks overexposed. However, there are glasses that treat just this symptom, and they are literally rose-colored. I went to see this film with said glasses and it was not only less glaring, but the reds and yellows were more saturated. It did make some indoor/Emerald City scenes darker, but I'm used to that. Bottom line: if you have any extra $30 for light sensitivity glasses (search for migraine glasses), get them. It's not just good for watching this movie. It's good for your health with all these screens.

But everything until the emerald city onward looked odd. The sets felt very ikea, didn't feel lived in- & the lightening.... it's a shame really. See one thing I’ve noticed with recent movies that kind of look colorless or bland is that they often look much better in a theatre. I noticed this first with Thor Love and Thunder the movie at least to me looked way more colorful and better when watching on the big screen, compared to the trailers and clips. There’s something about the way these companies churn out a digital output for these movies that makes them look bland. No way Home Asw the colors are made up with the home releases istg, the movie didn’t look that way in the theatre.

100% agree with your review. It’s an amazing movie though, but yes it’s not perfect and the points you brought up are why. There are small extra parts added that took away from the musical numbers, especially Defying Gravity. Another example is Dancing Through Life, there were scenes that took away from the song and the meaning behind the song. The songs of Wicked have strong meaning in them, the dialogue parts are supposed to add to these.
