A trip to Europe gives Kelsey a chance beyond her mission to see more of the outside world and the goodness and happiness that others have found while clearly outside of Mormonism. The trip also gives her the chance to tune in to herself and trust her intuition. Not ready to give up on her religion just yet, Kelsey returns home after the trip and ends up working with LDS Public Relations in various projects while also holding the calling of Relief Society President as she works through her active doubts.
Kelsey moves back to LA and finally realizes how much of a “box” LDS doctrines & beliefs put herself in. Kelsey takes us on a journey of personal discovery as she learns who she really is & to trust her own authority, leading her to the most free and fulfilled life she’s experienced thus far.

ABOUT US:
Mormon Stories Podcast is the longest-running and most successful podcast in Mormonism - hosted by Dr. John Dehlin. At Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We also occasionally interview scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1) Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology, 2) Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis, and 3) Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions.
Mormon Stories Podcast is a product of the Open Stories Foundation - a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to supporting Mormons in religious transition.

So, I am one of the never Mormon listeners, but as an exvangelical agnostic person, a lot of the stories that I hear ring really true to me as well. This one is especially true. I grew up in a rural southern town. All my peers got married young and I didn't. I also wondered what was wrong with me. I'm so sorry that Kelsey experienced this. My faith crisis started by meeting my college besties (a gay man and a non-binary person.) in the 1990s. My Southern Baptist upbringing told me that these people were going to hell because they were making bad choices. I loved them and when they told me it wasn't a choice, it made sense to me more than the lies that I had been taught. I started on my I have doubts moment then and over time the doubts got bigger. Purity culture and patriarchal systems within my religious upbringing harmed me. Also the idea that I had to be perfect because if I wasn't, I personally could cause someone to stumble and if they died, they would go to hell. It would be my fault. The thread was broken for me in 2015 when I was teaching Sunday school in an ostensibly progressive church and it came out that one of my fellow Sunday School teachers had abused his children and the church decided to keep it quiet. They didn't tell me. I found out through the grapevine. They didn't tell parents with children in the nursery where he had occasionally kept babies. I quit the church and refused to go back. Then the 2016 election happened and all the Christians that raised me proved they were okay with some pretty horrible things. And if they were a reflection of God, I"d rather be an agnostic sometimes atheist witch who lives in the space of I don't know.

Many people do not come to the degree of self-awareness that Kelsey has come to until they hit their so-called "midlife" crisis. Suddenly, after years of listening and following other people's advice on how to live life, you wake up and realize you actually can follow your own heart and take responsibility for the decisions and choices you make. And that is freedom!!

Hi Kelsey! I know you probably won't see this, but thanks for putting words to a lot of the feelings that I've struggled to find words for. I've been out of the church for over 5 years, but still find interviews like yours so profound and touching and hearing you talk about the sock puppet and asking yourself what you want felt like it momentarily lifted a weight I've been holding in my chest. Though Kelsey and I grew up very differently, I feel our reasons for having a faith crisis and leaving were similar... I found that the LDS church doesn't have a monopoly on truth, spirituality and joy. Funnily enough, I haven't read the whole CES letter yet either, because by the time I found out about it I didn't need it lol. I love the talking about reclaiming self-centeredness and get to knowing yourself and prioritizing your own needs is so important in this context at least from my experience, knowing myself and my needs also makes me more able to give, to love and to feel fulfilled with life as a whole. When I attend the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints I always tell the missionaries that prioritizing and loving yourself is important because loving thy neighbor as yourself if you is in essence worthless if you don't love yourself. And if we have to stay close to something Jesus taught. A nice quote from the gospel of Thomas that i like a lot on this topic is: "The one who knows everything but lacks himself lacks everything". Thank you for this amazing person and sorry for a little rant. Love to all of you and wishes of all the best

She’s a really well spoken and authentic person, I really enjoy her. I don’t believe you have to leave the entire gospel or Scriptures behind in order to leave the Mormon church though. As far as an alternative to "selfless", I've heard the word "otherish." Helping others but not losing your own self. I've also heard of reclaiming "selfish" - basically like John said about being self-centered, being honest about who you are and what you want, and not caring so much about how others respond to you.

I loved Margi's discussion about keeping people 'plugged in' so they don't question or think about how life could be lived differently. I accept this is a controversial opinion, but the idea of being plugged in isn't just relevant to Mormonism, but also to American exceptionalism as a whole. I'm from New Zealand and my partner is from the United States, and we have spent time living in both countries. It's taken as gospel by many people (to use that figure of speech) that the American way of doing things, whether that's culturally, socially, or economically, is superior to anywhere else in the world. Young Americans are regularly discouraged from taking gap years or extended travel. I sometimes wonder if this is because it's far harder to challenge or reflect on the dominant narrative of what it means to be an American and America's place in the world when you don't have an outside perspective and see how are done differently in other places. I genuinely believe that there would be much more will to remedy problems such as gun violence if more people had the experience of living/visiting places where the chance of a mass shooting taking place is infinitesimal.

You've put into words what I've been trying to say for years. And it's not even only on the big subjects. I was heavily criticised by someone in a breed specific group for walking my puppy off lead in the woods. They could not wrap their minds around the fact that its a perfectly safe thing to do here. We don't have cougars, coyotes, bears, wildcats, etc. Or traffic for that matter. It would have been funny if they hadn't taken it so seriously. 😂

After listening to so many of these " x" mormon stories It seems quite clear that the disattchment is less from a relationship with God so much as it parting ways with the institution of the LDS church. to put it another way I'm almost convinced that the " church " is the actual God in the LDS religion. The so called diety ( gospel) is only a mechanism to get oneself to the real God.... The church.

I think the universe has been with you your entire journey and getting you to where you are today. The kingdom of God is from within, means to me everything you need is from this life is right inside and you dont have to search from the outside, like we all tend to be taught. If we are good from within it radiates to the outside and we can be of service to others. I wish at your age I would have been as far as you are on your journey. Love is the answer to every question, every problem. So easy but so complicated unfortunatly for some.

It's the tragic flaw in many religions: the very values that form the core of self imbued in children as they grow - love, integrity, honesty, honoring and caring for others - become those values that cause people to reject the religion that nurtured the values in the first place. The emerging adult realizes that the institutions of religion don't themselves sufficiently honor these values as they operate the religion in the adult world.

Religion is a business. It is separate from spirituality, which is free. The fatal flaw in abrahamic religions (which are actually the only religions, others are philosophy/faith based) is they seek to destroy the spirit under the guise of people being flawed from birth. It's why paganism is becoming the largest faith as it encourages personal growth, seeking of knowledge and wisdom, and kindness and empathy to others in their journey. Paganism is the birth place of the 7 graces and the 8 deadly sins.

When someone has been control by others he or she must take control of their own lives and if you give your live to God, a religious institutions or another person, it's your choice, and God will hold you responsible for the choices you make, so choose wisely. The king James bible teaches we are to love our neighbors as we love ourself. The don't want you to not love yourself, the church does because it wants to control you. Anyone who try to make you feel bad for caring about yourself is someone who is trying to control you. I know I'm a giving person and care about others but I need decided how much I CAN give. Because people will intentionally and sometimes unintentionally exploit you for their own gain. It's our job to help others find their way by getting out their way, by stop trying to keep people from falling. We need to fall sometimes to find the strength that's in ourselves.

after leaving a high demand religion or cult, why would someone not first become grounded in their self, instead of retreating to religion? If they choose any spiritual or religious path afterwards it is then first coming from a place of being true to ones self... "to thine own self be true."

I guess maybe being a heady and fact based individual that these reasons for leaving a religion that are based on things like how the lgbt community is treated, how women are treated, etc are bad things but things that can be addressed and fixed. I need things that are fact based that destroy the foundation of the church like the legitimacy of the book of Mormon or book of Abraham, the sketchy things joseph smith did like marrying 30 women and very young women and the made up ceremonies based on the mason rituals, etc. These things cant be fixed. These are the things that would be faith busting things in my opinion. But that's just me and the way my brain works i guess.

How does a kid go to Europe when she’s living in poverty? Serious question.
@KelseyEdwards

There was 6 years in between that time :) by the time I went to Europe, my mom had already graduated with her degree and started her career, and I had almost graduated from college and was working for a kids' education company like I mentioned in the interview. :)

I don't identify as Christian! I identify as "spiritual." :) I believe there is something outside of us - Source, the Universe, God, whatever you want to call it.. but I don't subscribe to the tenants of traditional Christianity anymore. Thanks for asking!

When they call her "perfect" it's not because she's perfect at all. It's because she followed the mormon religion to a T. Never questioned anything. So to the religion, she was perfect.

Exacly you can not give a good testimony if you never had one. And if them you brainwash with your doubts people specially the members of the church of jesuschrist against the true values of the gospel. Yes we are sons and daughters of god. Breath pray ask wait and listen

There is no such thing as a perfect mormon girl on earth. Only Jesus Christ is perfect The rest of us regardless of our religion are just human beings who fall short everyday n trying to be the best we can n making our own decisions to make us happy.

There are lots of ways to serve god, but only one way to serve YHWH and Yahshua. YHWH is mot a god. Kelsey, Faith and life is a journey, you are growing, keep studying and hold fast to what is True. If people would just read the first five Books of the Bible, you would be FREE! YES! FREE! 1. You would know if a man cut his hair he is not from the Creator. (99% of elders cut their hair. Lev. 19:27 “Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.” Prophet Must do this.) 2. If the church is not teaching you to sing That Beautiful Song The Creator Wrote, then you are in the wrong place, and its time to move on! 3. Would I honor your name if I put a J in front of it? That is intentionally dishonoring your name. Same goes with the Creator and Son “YahShua” “Yah is Salvation”, so simple. So why does the world worship one who comes in his own name “Iesus” opps… forgot to put the “J” in front of it, “Jesus” there, “that is better”! Which one do you think will Save you? The Greek god J+ Iesus,("Saving Sky God" or "Saving Zeus") or the True Name of The Messiah Yahshua! (Yah is Salvation)? The “J” was added in 1586 when the English version was created. “My People die from Lack of Knowledge”. This is the Torah/Laws/First 5 Books Education is what great the holes in the box, that is seeing the light. We are all in different boxes, and in most cases we are multiple boxes. I tell my friends to question everything, but do not quit Studying the Scriptures. The Song is really great! Follow your Dreams! Seek the Kingdom of YHWH First, and all things will be added to you.
