Paul McCartney on trumpet is so funny. His dad bought him a trumpet but he traded it in for a guitar because he couldn't sing and play trumpet. Paul said "I can't play the blowing instruments."

Kinda fun to see Paul play trumpet. But I think he made the right move all those years ago by switching to bass. 😉

Good god... is this for real? Wow. When you're a pop star, you get to do whatever you want. Wanna be a "jazz musician" for a few minutes, or a few months? Why certainly, right this way; oh and by the way please help yourself to the instrument of the father of our Music. Call it yours, even, at the end.

I don’t think it’s any sort of egotistical vanity indulgence. It was a charitable benefit event during pandemic to support music and musicians at a brutal time for the industry. And this is the music of his early youth that his father played semi professionally in UK, and which inspired songs like “When I’m 64” or “Martha My Dear”. So it was a sign of respect in my book, and above all was clearly intended to be loose and fun for everyone.

@@WeaverFan Fair point. If it raised money for a worthy cause, that's a good thing. And if Mr. McCartney respects traditional jazz, that's good too. Musically? Made me cringe. And that's Louis Armstrong's horn! I wonder how Mr. McCartney would feel if a sax player like me grabbed his guitar and lurched my way through an embarrassingly lame "Hey Jude," and then dinged it against something while grabbing it up and calling it "my guitar." Not sure he'd find that super-respectful.

@@scottrobinson2060 that’s fair. I don’t think anyone (including him) thinks Louis’s or Miles’s ranking is threatened by him. Have no idea how he’d feel is after he’s gone someone plunked away on one of his basses while butchering, say, the bass line in Mr. Kite, but everything I’ve ever read or heard about him is that he’s pretty down to earth for a billionaire mega rock star and has an excellent sense of humor. I did actually enjoy his vocals on tune. Not at Irma Thomas’s level but the dude was 78 when that recorded and can still summon up the Helter Skelter type volume when it suits him. And in another video I saw the director of the NOPHJB explains that apparently Macca had been at some other event in New Orleans years earlier, loved the band, and asked for chance to play with him. Plus if you know your Beatles trivia his father played trumpet, gave him one, which he asked to trade for a guitar bc he couldn’t sing w a trumpet. So I’d like to think some of this was an homage to that as well. Either way the other band members seemed to be having fun, and given the grim misery or the pandemic combined with the legacy Macca has given the music world there are worse sins than seeing him play one instrument not so brilliantly while raising $ for Preservation Hall’s charitable foundation. ✌️
