Snow finally arrives here in North Yorkshire UK. It's basically a given that having a 4x4, not that we need an excuse but to go explore, test the capabilities and of-course help those unfortunate enough to be out in regular vehicles.

@@DarrenCheesbrough lol true. I saw that the second I got to the Alps last year, brand-new top of the range Porsche 4x4 spinning out all over the road, nearly causing pileups and wiping out pedestrians. Uk plates of course

4x4 is fine if you have winter tyres. It's the ideal set up. But it's the tyres that make the difference not the drive system. Also the profile is important, a narrow tyre is better than a wide low profile tyre you see fitted to most modern cars

The biggest problem with this country is that we do not have enough snow for young or even older drivers to gain snow driving experience or the MUPPETS in beemers or audis who think they can do the steep hill the overtake the waiting traffic spin out crash and then close the road for 27 hours because recovery companies are sorting out the rest of THE MUPPETS FAMILY just gotta love MUPPETS so take a flask some sarnies big bar of chocolate and a good book 9 dvds and something to watch them on Oh and a sharp stick to poke the beemer driver

When i was a teenager i had a session on the skid pan at Thruxton - exvellent and taught me a lot. Also - I often drive across Europe in the winter so always have either winter tyres or good all season ones. But for my D4 finding the best tyre is very difficult as they are 255/50/R20 and only Yokohama do an all season, all terrain tyre with the winter snowflake symbol in this size. The standatd Scrpions are only M&S and are not legal in Germany in the winter. BUT - I have heard that General Grabber will be bringiong out a new tyre with this spec. in my size next year - so, fingers crossed....

Honestly it felt like it was on rails and most other vehicles really appeared to struggle a lot! There not even winter tyres really but I was super impressed.

TRUE I use to have a BMW316i a car that most people mocked in the winter. I fitted 4 winter tyres on a narrower profile 195 instead of 225 and put some ballast in the boot. You should have seen the look I got when I went past some land rover sports on their wide profile summer tyres.

This coming spring i am hoping to tour the trails of Portugal and Spain and i am thinking of using Wikiloc through a Garmin Montana 700 . Nice! Looks beutiful. No snow down here in the south, just wet, winf n cold. By the way, what tyres are you using. I have 2005 Shogun that came with a set of 285/55 R18s but can't find a supplier/fitter anywhere here (UK).

Everyone who has a 4x4 thinking they are invincible in the snow and ice, not realising it doesn’t help at all with steering or braking. I’d take 2 regular car with premium winter tyres all day long.
