When the WEATHER F**KS the Mission - Stream Highlights - DCS World

I wanted to share with you an experience I had playing a DCS Liberation Campaign Mission. I didn't look at the forecasted weather and ended up in a bad situation trying to attack a SAM site in poor visibility conditions. Unfortunately the weather itself really f***ed the mission at hand. This really highlighted for me just how awesome the new weather is in DCS World 2.7 and just how important it will now be to ensure the weather conditions fit the mission at hand! These kinds of weather conditions really pave the way for Scout helicopters like the coming OH-58 to come into full play. Just drop a GBU through the clouds and there's a scout helo lasing the target for you in the terminal phase. Though these clouds were so low, irl it wouldn't change much.

I'm always less proud of my kills than I am proud of what I survive. Back in IL-2 I landed a 109 with only flaps and prop torque for roll and airspeed for pitch. I couldn't tell you a single kill that felt as earned as just getting those wheels down.

Yeah the new weather adds a lot. I flew a naval recce mission yesterday in the Viggen, found the ship without a problem with the radar, then almost smashed into the sea while descending to ID it. I had to overG the jet and pulled up at like 20m ASL. Terrifying if it was real life, absolutely amazing for flight simming.

I love it This is a real Oh Shit moment for all the "gamers" the folks who are experts with/in the simulator....but in real life Weather has a very large impact on flying. In real life, if you don't have an Instrument rating, and you are off flying in the clouds- You are taking your life in your hands.

This is literally what happened to me last night. Lib mission, Vipers out of Incirlik. Targets were a pair of SA-20s around Damascus with an additional SA-10B about 30nm south. Low cloud, rain and fog everywhere. It's hard enough to fight these things when you can see the ground, but the weather made it impossible. Ended up having to scrub it after some of the most tense ILS approaches I've yet experienced in DCS. 2.7 is a real improvement.

The big question is how the authors react to the weather situation or adjusting the parameters of the weather to accomplish their original mission. They need to set the weather or adjust the mission.

Some maintainer advice. What probably happened is you took a hit to a hydraulic component and it leaked all your fluid or when the engine ate shit the pump died so you lost pressure. With the lack of gear, speed break, flaps, and wing sweep I'd assume the auxiliary hydraulic system gave up. You were extremely lucky you only lost one engine and hydraulic system as if you lose both hydraulic systems you can't maneuver the control surfaces, dooming you to an uncontrollable landing. Great vid though

In this kind of weather you could technically try and do an IP-offset to target and CCRP release provided you can find a visible enough landmark / PIO to designate on. Works fairly well.

Yup, unfortunately landmarks were sparse and even then target locations weren't 100% known location wise

Yes, adds a whole new real-world level to things. Love it. Hopefully we're not alone. From trying to find a 'slot' to bomb in; fighting distractions from the rain noise (not sure realistic but was cool); to momentary bouts of spatial-D. When the AI & systems become aware...another notch of realism added. Just wish I could afford a GPU to run it faster :(.

Tip if gear is fucked in f14, you need to twist the gear handle (mouse wheel by default). It's a one time action, but better than belly flop

The enemy can still shoot at you through clouds, because the visual simulation of AI is not yet implemented. With other words: you cannot hide behind a cloud.

By the way, I think left engine couldn't start cause the fire wasn't extinguished 1st maybe?! I had a similar experience, and tried to pull left yellow handle (Top left center console next to AOA indicator) and then started the left engine, which worked....theoretically it used bleed air from right engine to crank it.....

you would never refuel inside a cloud bank, not ever. recovery is easy with ILS/ILCS

@@lucasaiken3978 i think you missed the point. most missions are pre 2.7 thus, not taking into account the new clouds. tankers could be flying int clouds, and this has happened to me multiple times.
