@@genno3714 I know a teacher who was injured pretty badly when a wild student picked up a desk and threw it at her. She sent him to the office and the principal told him to go right back because that was the teacher's problem. Another former teacher that I know was set on fire by a student and the principal tried to blackmail the teacher into not reporting it to the authorities. This caused her to quit. The principal did not give one rat's bottom about what happened to the teacher and accused her of causing the student to do this. I could go on for ages with similar stories just in my jurisdiction, and some of them happened to me. And we wonder why so many of these kids grow up with serious social and behavioral problems.

Joyce Price When the principal gets a student referral, the teacher has given the principal the issue to handle. Don’t tell the principal how you want them to handle the issue 😃. We all want the same thing. We want all our students to know we care. The principal can take more time,a classroom teacher doesn’t have, to try to figure out triggers of behaviors and then work toward solutions. Sometimes in doing so we might share a piece of candy, an ice cream, or lunch. 😉 I did do this in my career with some students. Not all and not all the time. But it is true. Gerry has got it right as usual in a way we all come away laughing. Saying to ourselves,”Yeah he’s got that right.”
@lornalessing20803 жыл бұрын
@@mapayton3811 I literally had to have a child in the 2nd grade removed by my room by the police because he was so violent. Do you know what the policeman told him? "C'mon buddy, let's go for a little walk and I'll buy you a candy and a drink if you calm down"--which he did immediately and was then allowed to skip down the hall to the teachers' lounge- where no other student was allowed, and then skip on back to my room where he flaunted his candy and drink for all of my confused kids who followed the rules but had no candy to see. And guess what-- he was throwing chairs within the hour. Giving a student who has stolen instructional time from 25 other students a reward in any shape or form is WRONG point blank period. Gerry has his head on straight and is totally correct. I'm retired after many years in the field and the only person who could get me to go back to the rat race would be Gerry Brooks because he is the only principal who speaks the God's honest truth.

These students would come back to class with candy that the well behaved students did not receive. The well behaved students didn’t understand why they didn’t get candy, too. His strategy didn’t work and the kids were worse when they came back to the classroom . Those were a miserable couple of years for the staff!

Love the 90 minute staff meeting. Teachers work at home, during their lunch break, before and after school on lesson plans, grading students work, cleaning the room, setting up teaching exercises, meeting with parents by phone, email or in person, etc. Administration after sending out email and paper copies they decide they need to read to the teachers as if they can't read. At some point instead of lip service actually understand these teachers are people not robots who are burning out.

At the risk of somebody from my school seeing this..... SO TRUE. Our kids get rewarded for bad behavior all the time - frustrating the teachers and other support staff to the point of wanting to storm the office with torches and pitchforks. Credibility of our authority is severely compromised. Then there is the Domino Effect - where other kids figure it out and follow suit. Teachers and staff in my school took issue with one student and the apparent special privilege received because the mother also works in our office. The principal responded by "putting distance" between the CHILD and the specific staff member the student tested the most - so the issue would just "go away" for the last few weeks of school. The child had lied about the staff member (and the principal knew it), and his mother went on the attack saying the staff member was targeting her son, who was consistently disrespectful and disruptive because he knew he could. When the inmates take over the asylum, we are all in serious trouble. Gerry Brooks has hit the nail on the head!!
