Fun fact - I tend to be pretty active following Mtg because, well, the cube doesn't update itself. I'm pretty established and am the kind of player with enough background to parse their news. So when they said "Fetchlands are back as expeditions" I had NO IDEA that meant "Just box toppers" until this video.

If you're cheering for fetchlands to be reprinted, cheer for the Professor of Tolarian Community College. The Prof is pushing for meaningful reprints. Fetchlands as boxtoppers is a token gesture that still puts wizards on top of the dominance hierarchy.

Me and everyone in my play group has agreed to just proxy everything, it really makes deck building more fun and leaves more options open. Plus you don’t have to sell your car just to afford your mana base!

I want to get my friends into modern and legacy because I started playing back in 06 and I like playing with the old cards I grew up with. But they got into later and don't have the established collection like I do. So getting them interested in a format where the mana costs 2x as much as the rest of the deck is hard. It doesn't feel worth it for them. There's a desire to play older formats from new players but the investment can be as much as your monthly rent and for someone just getting into it the game that gets daunting and not worth it. I wish wizards would realize the potential in getting new players in the eternal formats.

Bruh, I've had the most fun with my friends playing proxy Modern Magic. It cost me like $6usd per deck. And as long as you're not playing at tourneys who cares. As long as WotC doesnt print the cards so the format becomes accessible, I dont feel bad about it at all

Storm is a great deck that doesn't usually run fetches since you don't want to shuffle after all the scrys you take. But yes, that is restrictive and disappointing that you can't pick up whatever deck you want.

I think the lack of reprints is evident that WOTC just doesn't care about eternal formats, they'd rather have everyone playing standard and arena, where the money flows one way and your deck expires every year have to buy more cards. also if everyone is playing the eternal formats they will get more people yelling at them to put it on arena, which i'm sure they don't want to spend the time and money to do.

As someone that owns a set (read: one-off) of fetchlands for commander, I don’t think that neither special frames or boxtoppers are a good enough reprint and the announcement for MH2 in Q3 or Q4 of _next fucking year_ is just an insult. I want to be excited about magic, I truly do, but I fucking can’t justify it for basically anyone not making a medium to high 5 figures. Every single one of my friends have come to breaking apart their commander decks and selling the pieces, we play “competitive” so it felt like a reward to slowly complete your deck, we play with proxies for duals and some higher priced staples but knowing that your effort could get you the real deal with time and stuff felt good, especially to me but I had a better job at the time than them so I could afford the extra mile. Now I’m just thinking, this format is literally unplayable, everything is ridiculously overpriced, buyouts happen every day and the incentive to just cash it out grows every single second. I got a Gilded Drake like a year ago for 60 bux and now it’s over 230, same with a bunch of stuff that wasn’t even original print higher rarity or not even reserved list but everything just keeps creeping and who am I to tell anyone, “hey, just sell your car so you can buy this pile of 100 cardboard rectangles!”. It’s fucking stupid and WotC is the only one to blame, this is a GAME, not a fucking investment equity fund bullshit. New cards look great? Who cares, no one can play with me anyways...

Paper MTG has become nothing more than an /r/MTGFinance circlejerk. Theres no incentive to get the cards because for the price you need to build a fun and cool deck (that isnt mono colored shit), you could get a car, a down payment on a house, a good retro game collection, build a computer, go on a fun trip, just ANYTHING ELSE that would probably be better (and FEEL BETTER) than overspending on old ass cardboard or new (shittier) cardboard. In his defense you guys fell for this once already with the fetch lair and now you're about to fall for it again your just waiting another year to do it. Your now paying 150 bucks for the chance at opening a fetch land(singular) instead of 215ish for a set. These are core functioning pieces found in all multi colored decks in Legacy and Modern. Do you run a multi colored modern or legacy deck? If it doesn't have fetch lands then it's strictly worse than the version of the deck that does have it. Now you will probably say WotC owns this game and aren't abusing and people are just griping about the priceon something not needed. This isn't the case though since WotC are abusing a system that they themselves have put on themselves in the past claiming "We wont sell you singles" but then making a secret lair with only said fetch lands and now they come to us as f**king box toppers. If these were different art versions of I don't know f**king "Uro" then that means people are complaining about how the shiny version is too pricy! Sadly as someone who would love to try Legacy and Modern in real life but sees the damn near 200-600 price tag on the f**king mana base I'm stuck only playing on MTGO. WotC KNOWS that the mana base and that mana in general makes and breaks certain decks and if they weren't abusing these fetch lands then they would be in the f**king core boosters ready to be cracked and flood the damn market several months from now. Not in another "Bling Bling" special edition that can have lord knows how few prints placed in them to make sure they don't flood the market! I've played this dumb a** game and several other competitive games for years on end and yes deciding to withhold a core part of the game via a s**ty pay wall is abuse! This is the same tactic used by Konami with Yugioh, 2k with their basketball series and EA milking the hell out of their Fifa franchise. The whole thing was really confusing, especially since I didn't watch the announcement live. I read the Fetch lands would be box toppers and I was disappointed, but then Seth tweeted the enemy fetch lands would be in Modern Horizons 2, and I didn't know if it was a joke or not because Modern Horizons 1 specifically didn't have reprints of Modern-legal cards. I also agree about the Zendikar Rising Set Boosters. It makes it annoying to search my LGS' webstore.

Same here. Very early on when I was just getting into the game I opened a misty rainforest. I managed to trade it for a whole binder full of rares that gave my collection a good kick start. With hindsight as an enfranchised player I kinda regret trading it but it was overall a great way to help me get a collection going

I'd love to see Timmy have access, but I do think people are underestimating the number of fetches coming to the market. 1 in 6 packs and 2 toppers means a collector box has an average of 4 pulls at the expedition slot, and should expect 1.3 fetches. Then also keep in mind, ZNR collector boxes have triple the print run of normal collector boxes and they're selling like mad three weeks out. I think there's exponentially more demand so I don't expect the same price impact, but for supply perspective there's way more fetches coming to market than the number of corona godzillas ikoria brought to market.

I really wonder why people say the "lottery" cards (aka expeditions) in draft boosters are gambling - while collectors packs LITERALLY are gambling. Draft boosters are for drafting, you're not supposed to crack them for value. With collector boosters, you can ONLY crack them for value. If anything, THAT's gambling.

The Expeditions in draft boosters were great. I never experienced it personally in any pods at my LGS, but I did hear people found it frustrating when one would get cracked in draft because a lot of people would just drop from the event to keep the Expedition without wasting their draft pick.

I personally agree with the comment about how having those kinda "golden ticket cards" can be fun and exciting for people who are just getting started in the game. One of the first years I was really playing magic was around BFZ and pulling an expedition from a random pack I bought (didn't even know about them at the time) helped me build my first constructed deck and get me really into the game.

They did say on stream that the collector's boosters would be print to demand and in terms of relative printings, there would be more ZNR Scalding Tarns than Double Masters Force of Wills fwiw. That seems like a lot more printed than the original expeditions and might actually put a small dent in prices?

I only ever bought one Battle for Zendikar pack. First booster pack i ever opened and i got an expedition wasteland. Didn't have any idea what i had till a year later. I personally care about expeditions appearing in regular packs. It gave players like me who couldn't afford valuable singles a chance at something good.

It's nice that you are still positive about mtg. I am very depressed about it, I don't want to play standard and I can't play modern. Both formats are too expensive and changes way to much due to bans and new broken cards that invalidate older cards. So far I've shifted towards playing dota 2, but I still find time to play edh twice a month.

I think you mixed up Boxtoppers with Buy-a-Box Promos. Although very similar in how you get them, there are differences. Boxtoppers are put on the inside of the box by the manufacturer. They're pulled from a list of cards. Buy-a-Box Promos are put on top of the box by the LGS only as long as supply lasts. There's usually only 1 per set.

There are still traditional expeditions though, there "the list" cards in set boosters right? I don't think we know what those are yet but you presumably some of them are quite valuable even though there aren't fetchlands on this list I think(?). So we do kind of get both. I wonder how often these expeditions show up in collector boosters?

Pretty sure you are confusing box toppers with buy-a-box promos, which are limited run, and only available if you buy a box from a LGS, which made them super rare since only the first few buyers can get the cards before they ran out. Box toppers originated in the master sets, where they had an individually wrapped card with different enlarged artwork without borders, and every box is guaranteed to have one because it's included in the box, and not given out by LGS store owners like buy-a-box promos are. Regardless, your point about too many naming conventions still stands.

I think what they're doing, is letting the supply increase really slowly. They'll reprint them in increasing amounts, a trickle at first, then turn up the flow, so the collectors cant complain too much i.e. I think they're telegraphing/pulling the punch for collectors.

Haven't finished the video yet, so sorry if you end up addressing this. I think it's completely illustrative of your point about changing terminologies and being unclear, there is a difference between box toppers and buy-a-box promos. Firesong and Nexus were buy-a-box promos, which are mechanically unique and a single specific card. They still do these (they announced one for Zendikar Rising). I think with these, the stores get the promos and give them out when people buy boxes. Buy-a-box promos come sealed inside the actual box, and is not a new card. There's also chance involved with these cuz it's not a guaranteed card. I don't think this really takes away from anything you say, if anything it reinforces it.

I feel like the Godzilla cards in Ikoria was the test for new masterpieces, much like expeditions were originally. I'm guessing they're doing it this way because od the gambling concerns. I've said it before, but I believe collector boosters and now set boosters are a red herring/whipping boy so when the man comes around to shit it down, they can sacrifice set/collector boosters to appease the suits and save draft boosters

I have noticed a lack of mention by most people who discuss the expeditions that the availablity has gone up many times. Instead of one in a lucky couple boxes, now there is one literally every box (multiple in the case of collectors). This is fantastic for supply!
