Back about 7th grade I was given a brand new 10 speed bike and while going down a hill I was pumping the caliper brakes. At one point, going fairly fast downhill, I hit the front brake first, without the back brakes and it locked up. Next thing I knew I was headed for the pavement and my bike was flying over me and landing further down the hill. No safety gear on and except for some scrapes and bruises, I was okay, but it bent the heck out of my new bike, trusting the handlebars and warping the rim. I learned from that one event a whole lot about using brakes correctly and mindfully. I'm glad you have only sprains to heal from. Even that, along with the ribs, can keep you down and out for awhile. I hope you stay active once you have healed enough. That's probably one good way to prevent stiffening up and allow the skin to be flexible. Vaseline applied to the scabs will help soften them up. It's when they get hard and inflexible that they become more painfully, possibly infected and more likely to leave scars.

Going down a hill on a loose road requires staying in a low gear and using the engine as a brake because once you start going too fast and have to brake then you take a chance of falling. Once you lock up the front brake, you are down. Hope you heal well and hope others can learn from this.💖💖💪💪🙏🙏

The problem here is most of smaller scooters people buy to get around are automatic. You can't use engine or gears to help you out going downhill.
@rustyevolution6298 Жыл бұрын
There are a number of reasons why scooters are a bad choice and the fact that they have automatic transmissions and thus have no engin breaking is one of them. Also the smaller less stable wheel base and the fact that most expats/tourists have never ridden anything more than a bicycle and think that they are the same thing only compounds the issue. Countersteering is totally alien to them which often leads to them running wide in the corners or crashing. He is 100% correct when he says Slow Down!

@@puppyupper4565 scooters can STOP on a dime, but, you are right, they don't have the power to get you out of danger, where the second rule of going SLOW comes in and yes, dogs ... I was on Maui, on a Honda elite 50CC back in the day going to work, and this kinda a big dog about the size of a german shepard walked into the road and in front of me, I had two choices...1) lay the bike down, or hit the dog... I think hitting a dog that size on a scooter would probably send me up in the air, so, I chose to lay it down, Luckily it was at night and no one was on the road, and I was NOT wearing a hemet, I tucked my head and did summer salts into the on coming lane, wasn't hurt, but the bike had a bent mirror and break lever and scratches. In 2008 when I was 55 years old I had a fall from my bike, it landed over my right foot and damaged some bones (I was wearing full riding gear, top to bottom). Today I have mild arthritis on my right foot that I control with painkillers. As we get older it takes a long time to heal and there are sequels from this accidents. You didn't mention if the scooter had anti lock brakes. I'd say that 99% of riders don't have a clue how to stop a bike in an emergency, most times riders grab a handful of brakes, lock the wheels and fall. It is absolutely essential a bike be fitted with anti lock brakes. Don't ever ride a bike not fitted with anti lock brakes, your life depends on it. Hopefully your friend will have a full recovery without sequels. Cheers from OZ mate.

To be fair the helmets we mostly wear here are really just bicycle helmets to keep from getting a ticket (first offense is like 50 pesos or one dollar). Usually after the first real wreck people start using a hotter to wear motorcycle helmet. Not bashing the guy I wear the same bicycle helmet if one at all. Didn't wear one at all in America (mostly Texas) ever, exception was on freeways in Houston going back and forth to work then sometimes. If you hit your front brake on a bike with water or gravel on the road anywhere in the world on any bike you take a great risk of going to the ground. These things are not toys but often they might seem harmless until you meet the ground or metal 😉. Glad he is ok. Watch out for DOGS, chickens, goats and drunks also 😂😂😂

Driving in the Philippines is kind of a free-for-all, just in general, and I've been on a scooter in the Philippines quite a bit, and I'd be happy to never be on a scooter again in the Philippines. Even if you're young and in perfect physical shape with cobra-like reflexes and you're careful, someone will do something stupid in front of you, behind you, next to you, etc. and try to kill you. It's just a fact. Get a car. Believe me, every single one of those Filipinos you see on scooters/motorcycles would be driving a car if they could afford one, they know how dangerous it is in the Philippines. Or, you could just walk everywhere, as you suggest. But it's a car for me.

Paul, I commend you and Daryl for doing this video and especially Daryl for being so honest. 30 years on a Harley without a helmet? I never get on my motorcycle (been riding big bikes since youth) without All The Gear All The Time (ATGATT) and I have taken many courses in both high speed and slow speed handling (track and motorcycle cop skills) not because I'm so smart, but because I've lost friends on bikes. As a result, I have not dropped a bike since youth, and I have enjoyed my bikes feeling safer than in my car. What Daryl described sounds like he locked the front brake and it flipped the bike. Most riders have no idea how to trail brake, which allows riders to corner or stop from very high speeds to low speed quickly and safely. This technique is a skill that requires patience and practice. The worst riding I have ever experienced was in the PI's, not because of bad roads, dogs, etc. but because of the really bad bike handling practices of others. I've seen some amazing things, like riders carrying infants in their arms without any gear. Unreal. Be safe by learning proper skills, and wearing full gear.

Motorcycles aka Coffin on Wheels. From Wiki: On November 11, 1972, Oakley had a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia, just three blocks from where Duane Allman had his fatal motorcycle accident the year before. Oakley was riding around a sharp right bend of the road on Napier Avenue at Inverness when he crossed the line and collided at an angle with a city bus making the bend from the opposite direction. After striking the front and then the back of the bus, Oakley was thrown from his motorcycle, just as Allman had been, and struck his head. Oakley declined medical treatment after the accident and caught a ride home. Three hours later he was rushed to the hospital, delirious and in pain, and died of cerebral swelling caused by a fractured skull. Attending doctors stated that even if Oakley had gone straight to the hospital from the scene of the accident, he could not have been saved.[4] He was 24 years old when he died, the same age as Duane Allman.

Bad that, this incident happened to you. Be glad you are alive. I'm 65 now, started riding at 10yrs old on a 50cc Honda, by 16 I was driving 350cc Honda, Drag racing on the Track and some roads. By 19, I was riding big bikes, (no mishaps yet). Drove on Caribbean Islands, Dominican Republic and in extreme Lawless road countries. At 65 after a Lifetime of motorcycle miles, I studied the Philippines traffic demeanor, these drivers are "special", Upon arrival to Manila on May 12, 2023, I spent 3 days just walking and monitoring the street Zoo. After that and relocating to Mindanao, I decided that a 2023 BajaJ Maxima was the way to go. 250cc, 4spd , very strong Trike, with a strong Metal body to protect you. As of today May 30th, and after over 1,000 kilometers Touring Mindanao, and experiencing Iligan & other Mindanao big and small cities traffic, I'm 100% sure I made the correct decision. I recommend a Trike to all you guys that still want to "ride" cheap and good gas mileage. (then again anything can happen in the Philippines Traffic Zoo) I'm glad you came Out alive, that you recognized the initial catalyst that provoked the accident and the Lesson learned. Next stop for me, Dumaguete, maybe Coffee and good conversation with Paul and the "black sheep squadron"..!!👍🏼✌️

Being a rider myself for several years, I’m going to give this guy a pass with this accident. I ride all my huge bikes here in the US but a scooter in the Philippines. Knowing how the roads are there, you can be riding perfectly on a semi maintained road and at a blink of an eye when cornering, the road becomes gravel, dirt and sometimes sandy. It’s like cornering in a mountain pass you’ve never road before. One tends to take it a little easier until being used to its turns. Not all bikers are leather and booted with a full face helmet but at least wear thick long pants and covered footwear. I knew a guy who wore open sandals on his R6 until one day a stone hit his foot. Lesson learned.

(insurance paid all but $300) I cant imagine what 2 nights, Xrays, meds, etc would be here. just an ambulance ride is $1200 minimum. So glad hes ok and only out $500. Wow.- thats my monthly insurance premium! Another confirmation living there is better.

So glad you are alright. I have been riding since I was 5 and even though the front brake has more stopping power, it can also lock up and be your demise. Best for super clean dry streets. NEVER use your front brake with *any* amount of dust, gravel, etc on asphalt, especially in a turn. Never use the front brake in a turn, period. Sadly, most of us learn that the hard way. You learned it the really hard way.

Gravel and sand is rear brake only. Been riding close to 40 years. Two times I've gone time and both were sand and both were because I used the front brake only. A big problem is black sand. Can't see it on asphalt. Blends right in.

Daryl is a lucky man to have had survived the crash. As a teenager I was lucky enough to have a small 100cc Kawasaki motorcycle then graduated to a BSA Gold Star 500cc enduro. On trails I was fine. On the roads even with the front headlight on at all times people would not see me. I also had a front wheel slip out on gravel while making a turn but I put my boot down & caught it. Too many close calls & friends getting life long injuries on their motorcycles caused me to sell & not ride ever again. Speedy recovery to Daryl !

What was the scooters model and make? Some of the scooters here have small front tires. With a auto scooter there is no down shifting to slow down, it’s all done with a brakes. One of the down sides to a automatic.
@grumpyolddude439 Жыл бұрын
You never touch the front brake in a turn. I've been riding for 50 years. Your tire has very little ground contact, and that little bit of friction has to make the turn. When you apply brake, and burn some of that frition for that, you lose out on the turn. One or the other has to give. Loose gravel/dust/sand? You stay entirely OFF the front brake, regardless of all else. As for safety gear...ATGATT. ALL The Gear, All The Time. I've had that argument, with far too many people. No helmet, no crash jacket, no gloves, no boots, no heavy, long pants? Stay off the bike.

My man, you should know by now that your video rig needs to travel with you everywhere. People get insulted if you don’t want to interview them. 😂 Sorry to hear about this man’s accident. I hope he recovers fully. Unfortunately every single person I’ve ever known who’s ridden a motorcycle has been in an accident that’s caused them injuries Some more serious than others. I’ve ridden on the back of a motorcycle but I won’t do it again and I won’t drive one. I am admittedly not cool and will have to find my way around the islands some other way. Wish this gentleman all the best though.

Biked all over Thailand, also time in Colombia, never an accident and Thailand is much more dangerous than Philippines to ride any vehicle. I run a 300 CBR, a 2018 Honda with ABS and I absolutely wear a Simpson glow in the dark helmet. I have never even dumped a bike once and I am 54 years old.

Hilarious he mentioned the blood pressure. Always the same BP for all patients. My wife has complained for years about this to me about the nurses here. The nursing schools here are diploma factories. The very basics like taking a BP most can't even grasp. They aren't even taught to do a basic IV. Just graduate them.. Ship them overseas to get more training and start sending remittances back to Philippines. I'll take my wife's word for it... She is a surgeon here

Paul anytime you go through severe trauma like a motorcycle accident like I was in years and years ago . The nurse threatened me if I could not give a urine sample they were going to put a catheter in and at that time it scared the hell out of me because I had never had that done before. But right before they did it I finally was able to urinate. Come to find out from the nurse it was to check for blood in my urine checking for any possible internal injuries. That was at Charity Hospital in New Orleans where I was taken after totaling out two cars on a Norton 850 Commando I was riding at the time.

So two things. The medical system in the PH is a LARGE variation in the quality of care you could get, and one has to remember that nurses and doctors are often underpaid there and a lot of people that come out of nursing schools try to go overseas, and the hospitals overseas try to get the best people out of these schools in the PH. The nursing training in the PH is also variable and there has been work to fix that situation BECAUSE OF the foreign hospitals getting people from different schools and they find some of these people regardless of how well they did in a particular school, they just don't have enough knowledge out of school. So, that's the bit about medical care in the PH. It's WIDELY variable. If you want quality care then try to find the better hospitals and live in those areas. The 2nd thing is transportation. There is no way in HELL I would drive a motorcycle, bicycle, or scooter in the PH in city areas. I've seen too much of what traffic and drivers look like for me to feel comfortable on anything less than a solid car in bigger towns/cities. No, just no. If you live out in the provinces to where you're dealing with small towns and roads that are mostly empty it's a lot safer. There's still risk, but more drivers are used to seeing kids run out in the roads, carts being pulled by animals, etc.... and they tend to be more careful and drive slower, and there just aren't as many people who own their own transportation and use jeepneys, tricycles, etc..... to get around. The drivers of these vehicles like the fact they're making money having a business driving other people and they don't want to lose it by being stupid on the road. Because of this if I lived in the provinces (more country/small town areas) I would feel OK about having a scooter, but I wouldn't use it for long distance driving where I have to go into cities. Once again, just NO. I plan to have a BEV there frankly, with solar panels on the house to charge the vehicle.

Coasting down a hill? I've had a M/C license since 1977. You never "coast" down a hill. Never. You use engine compression to help regulate your speed and then you only need a brake sparingly. Next: you NEVER use the front brake on gravel if any road canter is there. My guess is he may have ridden a Harley for X number of years but has never taken a motorcycle training course. I've been through 3.
