As you noted in another video, make sure you don't put racing pads on your street car. You can get more aggressive pads for sportiness, but don't go to full racing brakes. They only work optimally when up to temperature, and you'll almost never reach that under normal driving conditions. It can be dangerous! Also, racing and sporty brake pads eat your rotors up faster too.
@adamrichardson2227
@adamrichardson2227 6 жыл бұрын
Good point. They also are louder and cause more dust. If you are racing the only thing that matters is the high speed and heat performance, otherwise get street pads. After I installed my big brake kit from Akebono I was tempted to do this. I am glad I didn't since I don't trust my skills at a race track haha

I’m runnin metallic pads. Press the brake a little harder for the first stop till they get a little heat in them, big deal. Once they are warm, I’ll just say I’ve never faded them. Other than that , most of the times when the rotors are shot, the pads are shot so it all gets replaced. The previous front (metallic) pad set on this car lasted for 90k of mixed driving.
@kramnull8962
@kramnull8962 5 жыл бұрын
chbrules, they are like sandpaper on your pads. So you will need to change the front pads used with slotted rotors every 10,000 miles or so... Bigger wheels/tires also cause higher brake wear as well, because they gather more momentum. Well unless you use the transmission to help in braking...

That's why some porsche owners with the PCCB (the ceramic brake discs) switch back to the regular Porsche brake system. While it's outstanding on a track, the ceramic brakes suck big time in the rain driving in the city.

You definitely know what you’re talking about Scotty. Definitely from experience. I learned the hard way. My brake pedal sank to the floor and I thought that bleeding the brakes would fix it right up...I was dead wrong. I was so confused and didn’t know much about vehicles, so I changed the master cylinder and that fixed it! Kinda felt dumb after that point forward...

Watching this video brought back my PTSD that I got last year trying to get a brake issue fixed.
@jeff92k7
@jeff92k7 6 жыл бұрын
Regarding bleeding the system... It should be done periodically. Brake fluid can wear out and the chemical composition can change over time due to heat and other factors. When this happens, the fluid isn't as "firm" and the pedal can get spongy even without air leaking into the system. I had this on a (then) 16 year old car. The brake fluid had turned a really dark red and the pedal was going all the way to the floor and barely stopping the car. I changed all the pads and then bled each caliper individually until all the old fluid was gone and there was new, clear fluid at each caliper. After doing that, braking performance returned to normal. Drivers should also inspect the rubber hoses at each wheel to make sure heat or debris have not weakened the rubber causing it to bulge out. This can also cause spongy brakes as the fluid is pushed into an expanding bulge in the hose instead of pressing against the piston in the caliper.
@workingshlub8861
@workingshlub8861 6 жыл бұрын
brake hoses can look fine on the outside but go bad internally and seize up your calipers..
@hellshade2
@hellshade2 6 жыл бұрын
@Jeff foster what happens to the brake fluid is it absorbs moisture. brake fluid is hydroscopic and this cause the fluid to become contaminated. this condition will cause the pedal to get low and spongy. but in regards to a bulge in a brake hose that will not cause your pedal to be spongy,but it is a rupture in the inner hose and should be replaced immediately.
@sienile
@sienile 6 жыл бұрын
Simple way to check if your fluid is old and contaminated: Is it black? If so, it's full of moisture. Most cars will have this issue after about 5 years. Good idea to replace your coolant as often as your brake fluid, they both typically have a 5 year service life.
@jeff92k7
@jeff92k7 6 жыл бұрын
@Hellshade2 Yeah... that. I didn't take the time to look it up again to get the specific details. Just knew that sometimes it does need to be bled and changed, even though Scotty said not to worry about that in the video.

@Rick M these days at least the abs unit is stand alone. back in the 90's general motors had a number of cars,mostly J bodys (sunbird,olds ciera,etc) that had the master cylinder and abs as one unit. if the master went bad you were looking at near 1,000 dollars for a replacement. don't know which engineer thought this was a good idea...

It’s not it’s just computer driven. When braking normal all the breaks are applied when the computer detects wheel spin or slide it closes certain valves and only opens others so it can individually brake the wheels separately for each other. It’s pretty simple system just the computer side people freak out over.

Oh how this video made me recall my reckless abandon days in college 36 years ago. As the typical student who had no money, I could not fix the brakes on my 63 Bug when they stopped working (pedal to the floor kind of thing). But my cable emergency brake worked just fine for city driving where 25 MPH was the usual speed limit. I would pull on the brake handle and became an expert at stopping at intersections. Even went out on dates and learned how to discreetly pull the emergency brake handle so not to call attention to what I was doing.

An important thing to remember when checking brake pads is to always check the INBOARD pads. On a typical floating caliper, these ALWAYS wear more quickly. For this reason, simply checking the outboard pads can give you a false sense of how much your brake pads are actually worn. Also, because inboard pads wear more quickly, the pads with the squeaker should ALWAYS be installed in the inboard position.

I live in a state that has yearly vehicle inspections and glad that I do. In fact, it is starting to get to the point that I don't really like driving in states without inspections because people do neglect their cars so badly. While the yearly inspection does seem like a bit of a pain in the brain, the extra safety on the road is worth it.

Well when you live in Phoenix where it’s currently 120 degrees, and your car has 20 year old DOT 3 in it, there’s going to be some moisture in the system. Then when your brakes get white hot because someone cuts out in front of you, the moisture boils and forms air. So it is possible to have air in your system without having leaks, I see it all the time when I gravity bleed cars here.

Avais Hussain that's a good comment. I used to ask a customer requiring a brake job how much is you life worth. If you live in the rust belt Northern states or Canada and they salt or sand the roads or both you should service the brakes at least twice a year irrespective of M/Km's driven. Rear calipers in general suffer more from salt/sand intrusion. Honda's Rear calipers are poor in this medium for the pads sticking and corrosion etc, Subaru rear caliper though not as prone to salt/sand. If you service them regularly they will function well if you neglect them though it's rotor and pads and maybe other parts as well.

MoogleMy I drive pretty quick.. I won’t get into the politics of how fast I drive. But brakes and tyres are something I never ever cheap out on. Fluids, pads, rotors. Even if the car I have is cheap I wouldn’t. Cheaper cars need it most. If I ever felt my brakes weren’t working right I’d either get out of the car or drive real slow.

Good video Scotty thank you I put front calipers on a 2007 GMC Sierra all the fluid leaked out of the lines so I filled it back up trying to bleed it like the old style stuff by pumping them and releasing it wouldn't do nothing so I told my brother-in-law what my problem was he said start the vehicle up have somebody in there pumping the brake pedal while you're doing it and that way they would bleed and that engages the ABS system so you do not have to have that expensive tool or machine to bleed your brakes on those vehicles

0:47. Scotty. You're assuming that the outside pad wears at the same rate as the inside pad but if your calipers aren't of the floating type and the outside piston gets stuck, if you only inspect the outside pad, you'll think your pads are OK without realizing that the inside pad is shot. 1:28. I believe most rotors are cast iron, not steel. Another great video Scotty!

You didn't mention if the brakes squeaks it might be the back of the brake pads that needs some lubrication (like copper grease or ceramic).
@johndavies4644
@johndavies4644 6 жыл бұрын
1m2r3a all pads come with a squeal plate on the back of the pad. never apply copper grease to it. Only on the tabs/ears and that's it. And slider pins grease on slider. Never put copper grease on the back of brake pads

You are right, but in some cases the heat destroys the squeal plate and then you are left with metal on metal so a little grease can fix the job. Also +1 for applying the grease on the tabs.

@junqueboi387
@junqueboi387 6 жыл бұрын
If you are not having to add brake fluid, it probably is the master cylinder "bypassing" (internal leak). Sometimes you'll have brakes; sometimes not so much. It's very common on these older GM cars of this era -- I've had to replace several on my cars over the years (two are '78 Firebirds -- so same as your car).
@hellshade2
@hellshade2 6 жыл бұрын
@soulcommander it maybe your fluid is contaminated. if you have no leaks and the pads and shoes are good have the brake fluid flushed. those gm's were notorious for that back in the day because of the type of master cylinder. pop the cap and look at your brake fluid if it is a dark color and nasty smelling then that is probably the problem.
@Soulcommander
@Soulcommander 6 жыл бұрын
hellshade2 thanks I'll take a look at that the cars only got thirty six thousand miles on it. It was my mother's I bought it for in 1978. But I understand that that could be getting old you could be right I will check it. Now if I could only find a really decent shop around here that knows how to work on old cars and make this thing purr like a kitten again.
@MrKnutriis
@MrKnutriis 6 жыл бұрын
1978? Mileage doesn't make a big difference. Old seals shrink and get brittle. If you don't have leaks at the wheels, you're leaking internally in the master cylinder. They're only $50 and an hour to replace - yourself.

Although I can't say for certain, I imagine that complete, sudden brake failure is incredibly rare, especially outside of racing, where the systems are being pushed to their mechanical limits. I agree 100% with you Scotty.......Akebono Pads are the Best Brake Pads for the Daily Driver. They last a long time, provide great stopping, quiet, makes little dust (unlike a lot of oem pads with will turn your wheels black 2 days after washing your car). rotor friendly. The rotors can last 2-3 sets of pads. A lot of oem pads will eat up the rotors too, so they have to be replaced everytime the pads are. I use the Ceramic Akebonos. They are reasonably priced, and in many cases they are less than oem.

Most modern brake pads have two indicators. The old fashioned metal clips and also chamfered pad material. The two cutouts on each side of the pad are basically built in wear indicators. When the chamfered edge wears smooth that is a sign to be on alert. Usually before the metallic squeal indicator but inspect and be ready for replacement soon.

At 5:31 where you post the graphic of a car suddenly braking with or without ABS (antilock braking system) people should look at that. Very helpful since I don't think 95% of driver's don't know what ABS does. I got an ABS lesson about 25 years ago when driving my BMW 318i. I was tooling along on a city traffic road, and got distracted for a second or less (forgot what I was doing, I think looking at the radio). I looked up and saw I was traveling about 25 mph. I was maybe 30 feet from plowing into the car in front of me, who was stopped at an intersection. Being in the middle lane there were cars on the left and right lanes. I jammed on the brakes, hoping my ABS was working (there was no reason to think it was not). I felt the brake pedal pulsating as the ABS transferred power to each brake rotor to keep my little BMW running straight, quickly, and in control. The wheels did not lock, the car did not skid. (In fact, the braking was externally unremarkable. I kept my cool and the ABS allowed me to say to other drivers "nothing to see here, carry one." The sudden braking was imperceptible. If I did not have ABS the car would have skidded out of control, most likely plowing into the car in my lane (the classic rear ender), or slammed into one of the cars on my right or left.

If the brakes are squealing, and everything has been checked and confirmed OK, I take some sandpaper to the disc and scuff it slightly around the whole surface, both sides. Nothing major, just enough to provide a bit of abrasion to the pad and let them wear in differently. Most times this will stop the squealing.

When I was a service writer at a dealership in Cedar City Utah, I saw a lot of people bring their trucks in complaining that their brakes stopped working. They had huge trailers, and a license plate from a flat area like Florida, or Kansas. Every one of them had automatic overdrive transmissions also. They had all come down the mountains from Cedar Breaks which is over 10,000 feet to Cedar City which is about 5,500 feet elevation. They had ridden the brakes all the way down the mountain with the trans in overdrive and boiled the brake fluid, leaving a vapor in the system. The mechanic would give them a good flush to get the burned fluid out, and they were back on the road.
