I rode my 52mm down to like 44mm and I really felt the difference when locking-in on coping which for a beginner is adding a little bit more risk. So I think buying new wheels every 6 months works for me atm.

I like it when my wheels are getting small. Currently my dragons are down from 54mm to 48. Not changing em anytime soon. The coning can be circumvented by rotating the wheels crosswise every few months

This was honestly very helpful. I was starting to notice my wheels are coning as well and was wondering what to do about it. I think I'll rotate them for a bit and see how that skates, but if it's still a little wanky I'll get new ones. I just love them so much 😅

Could definitely be little divots or flat spots on the wheels. I've found that slick and hard floors/concrete make it more noticeable, whereas crusty ground can kind of mask them! 🤔

I’ve been obsessed with wheels since getting back into skating this year. I’ve been trying to find the ones that feel right and only way is to try different ones and they’re aren’t a huge expense (to me). My hands down all around fav wheel is the Powell Dragons 93A. Lots of hype but lives up to it, ride well on rough but also slide and can do tricks. I have some Spitfire classic but unless I’m on perfectly smooth surface I hate them. For soft I just got some OJ hot juice to try and so fun for riding fast in streets, also love Bones filmers, Ricta clouds. It’s fun to swap out wheels for different things. Ps, love your channel as usual.

All my life, I've skated gear down to the bone, so I don't even really like getting new shoes, decks, etc because I know I'll need a sesh or two to feel comfortable. Last year, I finally learned a trick I'd been wanting forever, noseslide to crooks, but found them extremely hard with the new setup I got in spring. Turns out, it was because I'd rode my old wheels down to a measly 39 mm (!), the size of skate wheels in the early 90s, when the trick was invented, which made popping the back wheel onto the curb much easier. Got em again now, but not until I'd bought another set of 50 mm wheels because I thought the 52s were too big for me, lol. I don't skate transition or go that fast at all, so small wheels feel nice and safe to me, also when trying flip tricks, but the trade-off of course is that they're a bit meh if the ground is rough. Great stuff as always, Sarah, love the freestyling!

@@SarahParkMatott Thanks! I was so bummed at first that I'd bring both my new setup and the sad toothpick of a board with the mini wheels for doing slappies. At first I wasn't having any luck with the 50 mm wheels either, until I had a good look and noticed they weren't entirely symmetrical. Like most people, I tend to put my wheels on graphic-in, but it turned out the other side had a slightly steeper transition from the wheel's bottom to the side, and I think this made going to crooked grind harder because when I switched em I had em again. There's one you rarely hear anyone about. Bottom line, it's never you and always the hardwarecs fault ;)

Try out the Powell dragon wheels. They don’t flat spot easily. Super smooth. Also, to prevent the coning, can’t the wheels be rotated around?
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’ll probably try those when I need a street wheel. Freestyle wheels are directional though. You cannot flip them to the other side when they start to cone 🫤since they shape is very asymmetrical. I’m glad people are bringing it up though for other skaters. I did it with my ricta clouds and it worked great. But forgot to mention it, not having ridden them in a while.

Also I discovered it’s different from surfing is sk8. I think I was a lured plus the deeper love for sk8 by the fact it looked like surfing but when I went more dedicated it was a whole new skill. I broke a leg and the nhs just cannot fix it complications but since then I’ve come ultra ultra close to landing HEELFLIP which got me stoked but the rub off was that it helps my stand up paddle boarding. Stoked to connect to you SPM and well done you’re looking like heeps more steezy than a year ago and kudos for that

I try to get the most out of my wheels by buying big (like 54mm) because they'll wear down anyway lol and when they cone, I rotate them in an X pattern AND flip them inside out. I also get formulas that don't flat spot because I like slides too 👍

What wheels can I buy if I want to do freestyle and get speed on them also?
@beastamer1990s
@beastamer1990s Жыл бұрын
Wheels shouldn't affect speed unless you're going over really rough concrete like on roads, in which case you should get cruiser wheels or softer durometer freestyle wheels (they're the same shape). Other than that, larger wheel diameters take a bit more effort/time to accelerate, but can hold momentum/speed a bit better/longer. Skating 52mm and 56mm wheels, the bigger ones don't go much faster but they make it easier to go as fast as I could on the smaller wheels and for longer between pushes, great for street cruising and keeping speed in transition skating, but the smaller ones would be better for anything that's really start-stop like skating a rail or ledge at a busy skatepark or flatground tricks on a small patch of concrete. The difference isn't huge though, and the bigger wheels are on a setup that's literally twice as heavy as the other, so that would play in a bit as well. If you're after more max speed, here's a few things that might make a significant difference: try Bones *Red's* bearings instead of regular bones (or other) bearings, put bearing spacers in so you can actually tighten your wheels down without wobble (wheel wobble can slow you down a tonne, you *need* bearing spacers, and they're like $2), make sure you clean your bearings with ethanol (ISO) and lube with speedcream if they get wet or dirty, and finally, make sure you're pushing efficiently. Doesn't hurt to watch a couple short yt videos on pushing to make sure your form is on point, but tl;dr: bring your foot forwards before you push (don't start next to where it was on the board) scoop with your toes, don't slam your heels and follow through, bend the knees and swing your arms forward to counterbalance.
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott Жыл бұрын
I would agree! Waltz and Mode make great wheels. So do seismic. They're popular freestyle wheels. Most freestyle wheels are around 54-55mm that I've seen at least. So, you're really just going to want to grab a proper durometer for where you skate! The Mode 95a are great for crusty ground like a rough parking lot or this crusty park. The waltz 97a are good for asphalt (little rougher ride than the 95a, but a little less sticky for shove its and such!) and 99a are good for tennis course or more rubbery ground! With a good pair of bearings and you should be set 💪

@@SarahParkMatott I would love this! Would appreciate a non-bro perspective tbh LMAO I gave up on skateboarding, and I think I'm having the same issues I had with rollerskating. It never occurred to me to consider that my wheels were too gummy & hindering my progression & movements. I now use 88A & 59mm wheels for rollerskating. Thinking of doing the same with skateboarding. The current wheels are by Zip Zinger 80A & 58mm. I know there is no perfect wheel & some people change out wheels, or have 2 separate boards for how they want to ride. I can't do that, so I guess I'll have to settle for a median that'll mean I'll be mediocre at both tricks & cruising. This is why I'm looking for a guide lol I do think I need a harder wheel, just not sure on durometer, and size as well. I dont want to get too crazy with tricks. Would just like to do kick turns, shove its & pivots & really get comfortable riding, so i can build more confidence to branch out and learn other tricks. Sorry so long!

@@BoxOfShockolates oh if that’s the case, you might want to check out the powell dragon wheels and bones formula x ones. Their formula was supposed to solve that problem. Softer wheels for crusty ground that slid better for tricks. And while there was tons of hype for the dragons, I did get the bones ones and they do work. Just as a quick recommendation after reading this😃
@BoxOfShockolates
@BoxOfShockolates Жыл бұрын
@@SarahParkMatott I’ve seen mixed reviews about the dragons, but thank you for the bones x rec! I will look more into this. I’m curious, what size wheel diameter did you use when you were testing out the bones x? That’s another thing that does my head in. Wheel sizes. I think most people hyper fixate on it. I often wonder what size to get etc what would be too big or too small to do what I want to do etc I do have risers, b/c the current wheels on my board are on the big size. If you were wondering, the current wheels are 80A 58mm. I also rollerskate & the stock wheels were 82A & 58mm. It really made a difference when I changed to 88A 59mm.
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott Жыл бұрын
@@BoxOfShockolates I got the 54mm, which I have just always skated. The thing about all this is that most wheels will have small compromises for how we skate, especially for any mixed terrain. So, I try to buy wheels for the place/kind of skating that I do most and try to pick my poison. The bones x aren’t designed for cruising, but they do absorb more than a regular wheel while sliding quite well. The dragons have an even softer formula if you do a lot of cruising. If I skated a smooth park 80% of the time, I would probably get a slightly smaller wheel for ledges and stuff. I do think 54 is a decent middle between big and small, but that’s my opinion only 😃
