In this world of rampant competition, we seem to be focusing more and more on making sure our kids know their alphabet, basic math, and three languages by age three instead of whether or not they are emotionally secure enough to cope when they eventually find a skill they can't easily acquire or a puzzle they can't solve.

This is an old video so you may not be monitoring comment anymore but I wanted to thank you. Being There was an earth shattering revelation for me, I had returned to work when my eldest was five months old and felt terrible. When he was seven months I read your book and stopped working, I’m now a full time mother to my children. I wanted to add my observation to this video, my just turned three year old is quite good with basic numeracy , he can count to 15 and can correctly identify how many objects like trucks he sees but this was totally organic. When we cook together we count out loud how many measurements we use or if constantly narrate on our walk “oh look, there are two pink birds” this very basic but natural daily interaction is allowing him to develop this skills in a non threatening way. Were sending our children to a Waldorf school and preschool as we strongly believe that at least until seven, okay and social interaction are the focus but it’s beautiful to see their literacy and numeracy skills develop in their own way with no stress. Thank you for your work

I know this is an older video but as a retired teacher i can tell you how much damage i saw as we added all day preK to public schools during covid with mask. We have feral kids who cannot function in a classroom so we can't teach.

Yes, this is really confusing because what are they supposed to do? I have an 8 month old and we read to him and help him to work things because what else are we supposed to do? If we leave them alone, isn't that not supporting their attachment to us? There's only so much cuddles my son wants...

You can and should leave your child to play by themselves from time to time during the day. You don't have to entertain them every awake moment. Let them play while you supervise their safety, so they can see you and know you're there for them. You can also do stuff while they're with you and narrate what you do, for example I'm showing mine that I'm cooking and I'm telling her that this is a cucumber and it's green and I'm cutting it so we can have a salad for lunch, etc. And lastly you can play with them, interact with them, in addition to reading for them from time to time.

You can read to your child ! She is talking about expecting the child to start learning how to read themselves etc.

So it’s not true we should introduce reading to them even at infancy? My health visitor would always tell me to read to my baby and when she reach one year old to read the book and point to her what I am reading

I understand what she means is kids actually read by themselves, not somebody reads for them to listen.

I taught my kid reading and math at 2. But through play not worksheets. And using schema play. It was all based off send and receive play interactions and following his interests while scaffolding in a bit of learning. The idea you shouldn't teach your kid this stuff I think is more about making them sit down and do cognitive "work" as opposed to play. My kid is 4.5 can read chapter books and does multiplication and division. Above average social skills and self regulations skills for his age.
