Hi there and thanks for your channel! The cockatiel babies are 16 days and 14 days. The female began to lay eggs yesterday after about a week of mating. The male seems to be doing all the work. I am concerned about her laying eggs again (several months ago she was eggbound). I heard that if you pull the eggs out she will continue to lay eggs. But I am also concerned that by taking out the nest box that it affects the parents routine. Also, it looks like he is picking feathers from the babies heads. Any recommendations?

I am a new breeder. How do you stop the parents from.plucking the babies feathers
@Bird.Squawk3 жыл бұрын
This is difficult. It's been my experience that young parents tend to do this. Certainly not all but it's younger parents that seem to have these issues. It's as if they truly don't know what to do. The one question I would have is how old are the babies. It's also been my experience that if the babies get to the point where they have feathers. The parents want them out of the box. And this is the way they're pushing them out of the nest.

I have tried various remedies and not getting any better. It is now not crying or begging like the other two/ Today I noticed it is attempting to throw up whatever is in its crop. hi, I have two baby cockatiels, maybe in between stage 2 and 3. one has a more healthy appetite than the other and is gaining weight everyday, but the other one isn't losing or gaining any weight. should i be concerned? he still eats and gets excited for food, just doesn't eat until his crop is full. he does peck at millet though. how do i encourage him to eat more? thanks
@Bird.Squawk3 жыл бұрын
You're doing everything correctly. Monitoring the weight is number one. I want to make sure that baby goes completely empty once a day. This is extremely important that they empty their crop at least once a day so that food doesn't sit in their crop and spoil. This only needs to happen once a day. I tried to do mine on a long feed overnight depending on their age. That would be my only concern at this point. Slow crop happens in this stage. Keep me posted. Monitor its stool. Keep monitoring the weight. Even at that stage it should be gaining some weight. At some point a decision may have to be made to contact a qualified avian veterinarian.
@smushroom13 жыл бұрын
@@Bird.Squawk both birds go empty over the night and then i feed them around 7am, and then around 3 pm, and then again at around 8pm. the baby who was only maintaining weight is now up to 79 grams empty, while the other is up to 84 grams empty. the one who is lighter actually just flew for the first time today which likely means he/she is pretty strong. the light one does gain weight, just isn't gaining as rapidly as the other one. healthy apatite though. they both eat 15-20 mL of formula per feeding and their stools look just like any other bird poop. glad i'm not doing anything wrong, this is my first time feeding baby birds. thank you so much for your help!

Why do so many people pull the baby's at two weeks? Why not three weeks or even four?
@Bird.Squawk3 жыл бұрын
It's been my experience that the two week range seems to fit perfectly on the time to take them away from the parents and start hand feeding yourself. If we wait longer it's been my experience that two things happen. The parents sometimes try to force them out of the box. Secondly they've not been around humans as much therefore they're not as tame. So, that two-week range seems to fit both of those scenarios.
@amberemma61363 жыл бұрын
@@Bird.Squawk interesting. I have a pair of green cheeks that had a clutch for Christmas. The one and only baby that hatched came on Christmas Eve. Two of the five eggs were fertilized but the second baby died late in the egg😔 I left the baby in the box planning to pull it at two weeks but ended up leaving it longer. Around four weeks I went to check on the baby and there was no baby in the box! Freaked me out until I realized it was on the bottom of the cage. I thought maybe it had got curious and had fell out unable to get back up but maybe they pushed it? The mother was still feeding it down there and was quite stressed for a day or two looking everywhere for it and calling to it. She's now laid another egg starting on a replacement clutch I guess since spring is right around the corner. But so far I have had no issues with the baby not being tame, it's doing fantastic. Which is why I asked, bc I just figured it's easier to let the parents care for it as long as possible...and they just seem so delicate at two wks compared to three or four...
@amberemma61363 жыл бұрын
@@Bird.Squawk I do have a question though. I have a pair of sun conures that are sitting on a clutch. Their first clutch was a dud and this one was three eggs all fertilized but one was an early death. The other two seem to be developing fine so far. Anyways, my question is this, the female sun seems to be famished all the time and her feathers look quite shabby. She is also Missing feathers on the back of her head but I have seen her reach up and pull them out with her foot herself, so I'm not sure the male did it. I have been staying on top of her and supplementing with formula and boiled eggs they get sprouts, fresh veggies and fruit oats some seeds and pellets and millet and treats. Do you have any idea what could possibly be causing her to be so hungry and to have lost weight? Could it simply just be the stress of laying the clutch? Her first clutch was actually laid on the bottom of the cage bc I wasn't expecting them to mate.
@Bird.Squawk3 жыл бұрын
@@amberemma6136 It could be a number of things. First she's a new mom so this is all new to her and her mate. plucking feather is a natural reaction to nest building. I'm not so concerned with that as much as the weight loss. when mom sits on the eggs she needs a mate that will either feed her in the box or sit on the eggs while she gets out to eat and drink.
@amberemma61363 жыл бұрын
@@Bird.Squawk the first go round I noticed that he helped a little but not nearly as much as I would of liked and he wasn't spending the night with her in the box every night. This time he seems to be much more involved but she still seems to be famished all the time. I put food in there three to four times a day. Her feathers look to be improving in luster and shine but she still has a bald spot. How long does it normally take for those feathers to come back around it's been months
