Beautiful birds! I have a pet bird named Fluffy, she's a sweet and shy cockatiel. She has white cheeks, white dots on the chest, gray and white stripes with a few white tail feathers, majority of the body is gray. But sometimes in certain light, she seems to appear a slight copper brown. Overall Fluffy has been a nice companion and very funny. I talk to her while she rests in her coconut swing/bed or on her perch.

Hello Bird Scawk, I have a Question. When your baby Cockatiel gets to the point that your only having to feed 2 or 3 times a day at what point do they start wanting Water? Or when should you start to worry that there not drinking Water ? Basically how does the Water process work for these little ones? Thank you so much in advance and I really enjoy your videos.

They get their water in the formula. Once you get down to a couple feedings a day you will want to add a bowl of food and water. this starts the weaning process.

Hello Bird Scawk, I love watching your videos , I’ve learned a lot from them but recently I have been put in a tough situation & don’t know what to do, I would like to see if you can help me out if possible I would greatly appreciate it, so my cockatiel laid a total of 5 eggs & one of them just hatched on Friday 05/20/22 , I’ve noticed that the parents do not pay too much attention to the baby & just lay on the rest of the eggs & leave the baby , inclusive I’ve seen that they just walk over the baby & sometimes step on it , I wouldn’t want it to sadly pass away 😔 the baby has been squeaking all day today 05/21/22 I’m not sure if I should pull the baby out & start hand feeding or do I wait more time before I intervene?

I notice you don't place your syringe into the baby's crop like I have seen other people do - is there a reason for this? Also, I plan to remove babies from the nest from day 1, does doing this cause stress to the parents? And does breeding tame birds cause personality changes/aggression? Thank you!!

@Bird.Squawk
@Bird.Squawk 2 жыл бұрын
At stated in our videos every bird will be a little bit different. I have a video out that describes this in a lot more detail but I'll give you the general idea here. You want to keep food in any baby's crop no matter what their age is all the time except once a day. So, every bird will empty a little different than another bird some are faster some are slower. You have to get to know each individual bird. So again your goal is to feed that bird all day long and make sure that it does not go empty. And then once in a 24-hour period you want to let that baby go completely empty. This allows all of the hand-feeding formula to get out of the baby. If a baby stays full or at least has food in its crop all the time days and days and days it has a chance of developing slow crop. This can lead into a pretty bad yeast infection which can need a visit to a qualified avian veterinarian to cure. Again I have a video out that describes this in great detail, check that out. Kevin

Hello love your videos I've learned so much. I had a baby born albino with red eyes it was born very small but its opened its eyes and they are red. Is this a rare thing? Do they turn out blind or weak? He eats great just smaller than average. The mother is white but with black eyes and the father is a grey.
@Bird.Squawk
@Bird.Squawk 2 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your baby. And thank you for the kind words about our videos. Your bird is commonly known as a clear Lutino. Because of the red eyes we know that the orange factor is in your baby's DNA. If it was an all white with black eyes it would be a white face clear. And yes albino gets tossed around on both of those. I think it's more important to know that it's a lutino and carries the orange coloring. Just had one of those myself. I think I even did a video on it. Kevin

They will always appear to be hungry even if they have a full crop. It starts to concern me when I go overnight and the birds still have some food in their crop. When I see that, it tells me that the food is a little bit too thick and the bird is becoming dehydrated. Next feeding I always water the food down more than normal. It's very easy for these young birds to become dehydrated. Keep me posted on how it's doing. Kevin

Hello there! Thank you for sharing such good information regarding hand feeding, you are so good! I have a question! My cockateils only had one baby who is now 16 day old and I am so scared that they do not take proper care of it. Sometimes the crop is empty and sometimes it is so full that it looks like it is going to explode. In the nestbox, the baby lies straight on its stomach as it has no siblings to lean on. I have seen the parents pull the baby's feathers and today the dad came out with blood on his beak and when I looked at the baby it was bleeding little. Should I consider hand feeding the baby full time? I am sorry if my english is not correct, I am from sweden 🐦

@@joanborn8835 I took it from the parents yesterday to hand feed it, they started mating again. Probably because they only had one surviving baby of 4 eggs. Now my only problem is that the baby does not seem to like the food. Hi, thanks for watching our channel. It sounds like you are on the right track with your budgies. Although we have never bred budgies I am sure there are a lot of tips that would cross to any bird species. From our experiences, both birds have to be happy and the male specifically has to feel safe and comfortable with lots of food. Make sure they have toys to chew and destroy, this helps promote nest building. Most breeding pairs prefer to be away from the commotion in a busy household as well. They need to feel it is safe for their hatchlings. Hopes this gives you a starting point. Let us know how it goes!

Do you have any videos on handfeeding a cockatiel that is having trouble emptying his crop, even if he's older and close to weaning?
@Bird.Squawk
@Bird.Squawk 2 жыл бұрын
Couple of questions before we can really know what's going on. Does your baby ever completely empty in a 24-hour period. The goal when we're hand feeding is to keep the babies crops with food all day except once. I have videos that go into this in much more detail. But the short of it is, your baby needs to completely empty once a day. That allows all of that food in the 24-hour period to empty and pass through the crop. If food stays in that crop it sours. This then causes a yeast infection. Around of antibiotics is the only thing that will take care of it. There are lots of home remedies out there, it my experience none of them have worked. The only thing that has cured any of my babies over the last 32 years is around of antibiotics. Slow crop, can be caused by a few different things. The bird can become dehydrated therefore the food doesn't pass through fast enough and then develops a yeast infection. The food can be too cold therefore it stays in the crop and doesn't pass through. And as stated above the food just stays in the crop because the crop never has a chance to empty. These have been my experiences.

Kevin is it common for red eyes to be born blind. My new born is two weeks it was born very small but it doesn't seem to see very well. I have it in a broader with another bird that is a week older and watches your every movement. Have you ever experienced this? The red eye you wave your fingers in front on it won't move like the other does.

That can not be answered precisely! You see all chicks will be a little different on the amounts they require. So, here's a general rule, feed them until their crop is full. you will need to watch to see it going empty. when it looks low, but not empty top it off. the goal is to only let the babys go empty once a day.... any more than that and they're not getting enough food. I have a few videos that go into detail about this. Great question! Kevin

It's been my experience that you would need to have that baby in the burger now. You're going to need to find a correct temperature but the baby is comfortable. You don't want the baby panting because it's too hot but you certainly don't want it too cold. I would think that around 17 days you would be in the low 90s. As far as hand feeding yes that should be done right now. As far as how much that's going to depend on your baby. All chicks are different. I have videos on this that explain this in more detail. But here's the short story, you want to keep your baby with food all of the time except once a day it should go completely empty. This is to make sure that all of the food in a 24-hour period has gone through the baby's crop. Birds develop slow crop when food sits in their crops too long. It's important that your baby completely empty once a day. But keep food in it the rest of the day. Watch my videos it will go into great detail about what the temperature of the food should be and the consistency of the food. And even goes into more detail about how many times they should be fed. Thank you Kevin

We recently bought a baby cockatiel that's about 3 weeks old and I have few questions. Hope you're able to answer me. Since the crop has to be empty at least once a day, does it count feeding him at 12 a.m. and feeding him around 7- 8 in the morning?? Or is that to long without feeding him? Is it normal that he shivers? Is that a sign that he is cold? We have him in a shoe box right now and we were told to put around nesting puffs to keep him warm. We also have a towel underneath the box that way it doesn't feel to cold from the bottom. Is that enough or do you recommend getting something else to keep him warm? Do they need to be bathed?? Or what should we do to keep him clean? Another thing, when we try to pet him, like try rubbing his little head, looks like he screams or something like that😅 what does that mean? Do they not like being touched as babies??
@Bird.Squawk

Thanks for watching the video and Congratulations on your new feathered friend! I will go through what we do to try and answer your general questions here, somethings are unknown to me though for example is the baby in a brooder at this time? This leads me to temperature....very important. I am not sure if you have some type of heat source for the baby but if not you should. Is the bird feathered yet? A baby should never shiver! That said you can over heat them as well. The baby needs heat, a brooder like the one we built on one of our other videos or some other form of heat. Let me know what you are using. Feeding...it is fine for the crop to go empty 1 time a day. We do this over night, we feed at around 12am and then again at 6am(for older chicks, not new hatchlings). In our experience going 8 hours may be too long if the bird is only 3 weeks. During the day we feed about every 4 to 5 hours depending on the age of the bird and its size. The baby should empty in 5 to 6 hours, if not then you could be feeding to much or the formula could be made too thick. You do not want to overfeed as this can stretch the crop which can slow the emptying process because the crop is not working as well. The same is true if the formula is too thick. Formula should be about the consistency of of a thinner apple sauce. The crying when you pat its head is just a baby reaction. This is how they get the parents attention in the nest. You are the babies food source so it thinks it is time to eat anytime you have it out. They grow out of this once they are grown and eating on their own. Lastly...it is not necessary nor would I bathe the baby. You run the risk of chilling the baby too much. I am not sure what bedding you have in with the baby but we change our bedding at every feeding so the baby should not need bathing. Occasionally if one has a dirty foot for some reason then we will rinse the foot but we are careful to not get the body or feathers wet. Once fully grown, weaned and eating on their own we can then introduce a misting bath as long as the temperature where you are is warm. Feel free to ask questions anytime. We are not veterinarians but we we can certainly answer from our own breeding experiences, if at anytime though you feel the baby is not doing well then I would promptly seek an avian veterinarian, baby birds are very sensitive and it does not take a lot to make them sick.

@@Bird.Squawk thank you for answering 😊 It looks like he is fully feathered and his feathers are barely opening up from the ends. We don't have him in a brooder. We have him in a shoe box. We were going to buy an incubator to keep him warm at a pet store(not where we bought him) but we were told it was going to be too warm for him so instead he gave us nesting puffs and a triangle snuggle cave but we don't know if to put him in there with the nesting puffs because we are afraid it could be to hot for him so we just have him surrounded by the nesting puffs and a towel underneath the box to keep the bottom from being too cold
