Had a good amount of nutsedge and crabgrass come up in last month. In my front yard. So I am gonna spray tenacity. And early October I will aerate and thatch and overseed. My backyard I haven’t done anything too cause my dog and kids have taken over. And I basically have like 70% crabgrass. So basically I am gonna do the same steps in back. Need advice. On Sept 2 Landscaper company did Core Aeration and Overseeding with Turf Tall Fescue over established lawn and to fill in some Brown spots where there was no grass due to Strong August Sun. I live in Connecticut near NY State line. I bought an oscillating sprinkler and a timer and set schedule to water 3 times a day (morning, afternoon and eveing) for 15 min. Today is Sept 14 - its been 12 days and I can see germination as occurred. I assume most of the seed has germinated since it was 85% Turf Tall Fescue. My established lawn needs to be mowed due to all the watering but by Brown -bald spots have only few seeds germinated and even when grass is fully grown, I don't think it will fully cover the bald spot area. So my question is do I wait until the new seed grows to point where I can mow the lawn (which it needs) and then re-seed the bald spots with seed and start the process again, 3x/day water, or do I seed the brown spots now with new seed (to try and get fuller coverage) knowing that my established lawn will have grown alot and wait till new seed grows in to mow (by that time established lawn will be in desperate need of a mow)?

If I have to apply fall fertilizer, what ratio is good? Can you please advise? Thanks,

Thanks for these videos, Ryan. Lot's of great info! In my case here in NJ, I'm a bit confused about what I need to be doing right now. It's been a rough summer, and my lawn seeded last year took a beating. It was really nice in the spring, but now I need to spray for crabgrass and other invasives and overseed, too. This week will still be hot, but I'm guessing it will start to cool off soon after. What should I do first? Should I spray now and hold off with the overseeding? How long should I wait? And what about fertilizing? I'm always worried about the order of things and timing it with the weather. Thanks.
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
If you crabgrass is really mature by this point it might be tough to get a handle on it. You can certainly try spraying it but just know it might not be 100% effective on fully mature stuff. I would probably go after tenacity/quinclorac at the time of overseeding or start on quinclorac now and get the overseeding done in the next couple of weeks. Starter fertilizer also at the time of seeding or a few days after is what works best for me. You might be interested in my renovation and full season guides for some more in depth info. Thanks for watching!

Hey Ryan! Heavy fertilizing in the fall makes total sense, the only that I have come across by doing this is snow mold. I live in the northeast and have had trouble with snow mold several times which was directly related to my fall fertilizing. I know that using a fungicide is an option, but for me at least, I have already used the recommended doses for the calendar year to fight off mid-summer brown patch. Anyway, any strategies you might have to explore would likely be useful to some folks like me and possibly good content for a video. Thanks again for the great advice!
@thomaspaquette99913 жыл бұрын
Not sure how tall, or which height you usually keep your lawn but stepping down that mowing height as the temperatures decrease can help avoid snow mold. I live in Minnesota and had problems years ago with snow mold and found the shortest I could get my lawn before the snow fell the better off my lawn was. Always use quick release fertilizers especially later into the fall season.
@sabingratz3 жыл бұрын
@@thomaspaquette9991 Thanks Thomas, I actually keep my grass at .5 inch for most of the season, and definitely put it to bed in the fall at that height. Good tip on quick release though, thanks.
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
With that height it really will need some sort of fungicide to be completely clean by spring. You can likely find another class of fungicide that you haven't used yet on your lawn that will not factor into that max that you used with your other products.

Ryan question. Live in the Twin Cites We finally got rain, 4" over 3 days. il I planned to overseed next spring since we were on the verge of a total water ban. Now with the rain,that is not going to happen. So now i woud like overseed this fall. But yesterday I fertilized with Scotts fertilizer 32-0-4 which was watered in with 1" of rain. So my question is: can I safely overseed given these circumstances? If yes, when do you think it would be OK to put down starter fertilizer given that I just fertilized at bag rate with Scotts 32-0-04? Thanks for the help.

I don't think you'll really need the starter. I would just get the seed down soon and if you think it needs to fill in more you could use a starter in about 4 weeks

My yard went dormant in the heat this summer when I had a house siding crew setup for almost a month in the yard. Any tips on bringing it back this fall? We finally got the temps to start dropping and a decent amount of rain in the past 2 weeks, I see some green popping through on its own, but how can I help it along and get it set up for winter. In S.Dakota.

I would get some water on it enough to core aerate and decide if it needs any overseeding. Otherwise just hit it hard on feeding and water and mow like crazy!

What's your HOC for the backyard? Do you go lower in the fall?
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
3 inches currently. I might get closer to 2.5 or a little under by the end of the year

I have been given the opportunity to take over our sports field grass maintenance. We are in the cool season area. The field has a ton of weeds and is just about “choking” out the preferred grass. Is it to late in the season to apply a granular post emergent?
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
A liquid form would usually be a lot more effective.

I literally bought your Cool Season Lawn guide last night for $40 lol. Anyway I could get it for $20 instead? Or get site credit of $20? I’d love to buy some fertilizer from you. Great work on the videos man!

Ryan, if I'm planning to dethatch, aerate, and overseed in a few weeks, should I still feed my lawn now, or wait until after I do all the work? Thanks! Love your videos!

I would fertilize after you do those steps.

Can you do a vid on the dreaded clumping fescue (KY31). It’s all over here in Central Illinois. Guessing it was in the sod as well as the pasture/bean field that was before a subdivision. It sucks. It’s ugly. It’s hard to deal with. What’s the play here?
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
Well unfortunately nothing will get rid of it since it's a grass type and not a weed so it needs to be sprayed out and re-seeded

@@ryanknorrlawncare It took me a while to figure it out. As a novice, I wish someone would have taught me that lesson years ago. Keep up the great show! 😉💡

Any way to get that Cool Season Lawn Guide in printed form?... just makes things easier for learning purposes than trying to go through it all on a computer or phone.
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
It's a pdf ebook so you can certainly print it on a home printer if you would like

Ahhh fall time the best time of year! Is there anything similar to that 13-0-13 in the big box stores?

Why are you using that Scott's spreader when you have a Brinly?
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
The brinley has a tougher time spreading low amounts and sometimes I'm after small doses
