Really appreciate you getting back to me from my email mate I really do. I feel better about winter already . Any winter tip vids you can do would be great cheers. When to do water changes has been another confusing issue as well as I do them all the time on my indoor tanks but have been told contradicting things about ponds . Cheers mate 👍👍

Gave me more insight into my Ghost Koi and Shubunkin needs as I'm a total novice when it comes to their requirements. I stopped feeding them last week and thought thats it til the pond raises to a certain temp. I didn't consider if they come and "ask" for it. However ... they have all took on a huge growth spurt this year with a new food and seem quite "greedy" compared to last year. All seem healthy and active and its nice to see them this way.

Just be mindful, they may ask for food but don’t feed a normal amount, little less and all will be good 👍🏻

I've got an about 1000 gallon outdoor heated pond with maybe 50 tilapia all about 1/2-3/4 lb. except "big fish" that is closer to 5 lb. I've been keeping it at 70 F and they have been eating maybe too well it's hard to know how much food to add. Anyway no floaters but I checked ammonia and it was maybe 0.3 ppm yesterday and I really don't have an easy way to get all their crap out. The pond is mostly covered up. I have bio balls in bags x 2 and a small floating raft with some hydroton and a small pump in my skimmer recirculating into a heater in a plastic trash can with air. 3x800 watt submersible titanium heater set ups. Gonna let them not eat today and test the water again tomorrow. Added some of that gel microbial lift stuff onto one of the bio ball bags. Nitrite at essentially zero. Feeding them Purina Aquamax 500 now high protein. Lowered the temp to 68 F and maybe down to 66 F coming up. Well that's the story I have done partial water change maybe 25% and added water to overflow maybe 10% over the top.

The filter system will remove the NH4 what did the previous reading show. We have bacteria in a dry form and liquid form. Also the quick fix, if you have major spikes

Hi, I’ve been feeding my goldfish a few times a week wheatgerm it’s 8c in the day right now and been getting down to 2c at night, should I stop now. They have been eating but I’ll stop now. On the wheatgerm container it says for under 10c so it’s not done them any harm a few times per week but I should stop now right? It’s the night time when the outside temp is getting to 1c this week. Day time is about 8

Read the packaging on the food, if the fish are active keep feeding a little (you can feed down to 5oC, or lower with some foods), once or twice a week. I offer them it via hand so they can tell me. In most garden ponds in the UK their is enough food, however some fish pools (bare liner no plants) you need to offer them the right food if they are still active

As long as the food is good down to 5oC you should be fine. If it’s not then yes buy the cold water food. If they are not coming up for food stop of remove the food. The quicker they eat the food the better. The longer the food floats the more algae will grow!

Hoping you can help. Yesterday my pump stopped working and given it is now early November when the temperature is getting much lower and the fish are entering the hibernation period, am I best to wait until the spring to replace it or get one now? Money is tight this time of year obviously so that is a factor but, I fear my filter will already have lost the beneficial bactetia. It's one of those inpond combined filter/pump/UVs so, I've lost the whole system and will have to replace tge whole system. I've popped in and old (and not very powerful) solar pump that will circulate the water a little and there's plenty of oxygen going into the water via airstones. There's a few plants in there too to take out nitrates etc... It's only a 500 litre pond with 6 Goldfish/Shubunkin. So, new pump/filter now which probably won't develop bacteria over winter and 'bed in' or wait until Spring to buy a new one which will then be able to integrate?
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 2 жыл бұрын
If you can’t afford the right filter now, wait/save up then look at the waterfall filters. You can add cold water bacteria 🦠 to help with the water quality, keep up what you doing don’t let the water sit still if you have lots of fish, oxygen is the biggest killer even in the winter.

It depends we’re you are in the world. If your in the UK you will be ok with the pond running all year. No heater in normal winters. Keep a hole open in the ice, with aeration or a pump. If it’s a wildlife pond no electrical then you don’t need to do anything

I've just discovered three dead goldfish in my pond. The older established fish...four of them seem ok. Haven't fed them at all for a few weeks too cold. Those fish that died are descendents of the four originals. Any ideas ?

@@ThePondAdvisor Yes, they seem ok. The pond is only a metre by two metres and about 900mm deep at its deepest. Like it said on the food packet, do not feed under 10degC. I think they have had two lots of food in the past five weeks and none in the last two for sure.

Do you have much waste in the pond? If so net out as much as you can or clean the filters.
@fifthof1795
@fifthof1795 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePondAdvisorThere is a little waste In it, but no more than last year. The water is very clear though. However, there has never been a filter in the pond. We had the pond for six years before we were given any fish. I just let fresh water from the mains trickle into it . One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be fewer tiny fish than in summer. We gave a few a few away . Do they eat their own ? We are no fish experts ! They are the first we've had die. The three that died were only about three/four inches long. Thanks for getting back with suggestions.
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 3 жыл бұрын
@@fifthof1795 The three to four inch goldfish could be this years? So they are young fish, first winter with more fish than last year, it will not be the cold as goldfish are one of the hardest fish on the planet, it’s more likely something to do with new fish or pond waste.

I now see what you are saying better, pump out the hole and put in under pond drainage, the pond will have to be installed higher any groundwater, it might be you need a sump with a pump or it might be you need to raise the pond level higher than the surrounding landscape. Were are you from?

@@christinawarburton5773 it will be. its probably ground water, as long as the pond your building has more water in it that the ground water level it will way it down, we built a pond last year 6” higher than the ground water overflow level, its just like filling a cup or bucket up inside another one as long as the top cup bucket has more water in it then the top one will keep the bottom cup bucket hole from filling up. Hit you need to pump or vac out the first hole the back fill with gravel or under pond drainage then install the top pond and fill it it should be fine!

I dug a hole in blue clay a few years ago and left it open it filled with water but went up and down with the weather. Better to use a pond liner. Then you can control the water with in a waterproof bag or container.
