Your lessons are carefully structured and paced and reflect a very high skill level as a teacher....you deserve to be congratulated. Thank you for guiding me through 'The House of Essere' and for shining a bright light on the selection of the correct auxiliary when using the Passato Prossimo and on what has been a perplexing topic for me until now.

hey sorry i didn't realize i responded twice. I have the final on friday so I am a bit sleep deprived. I also had another question regarding this video for a question that asks Hai invitato i tui amici alla festa di carnevale would the answer be si, mi ha invitati. If the question was how do we determine the ending of invitati does it have to agree with the direct object.
@SmokeArchon9 жыл бұрын
why is it avete finitO but siete andati .. when do I use 'o' and when 'i' in plural ?
@99problemi9 жыл бұрын
+Philipp Diehl Thanks for the comment. Verbs that use essere as a helping verb, like andare, venire, etc. change the past participle to agree with the subject in gender and number. In this example: andati is used because the subject is masculine (or mixed gender) plural. Since finire uses avere as a helping verb, no change is made to the participle. Yet me know if you have a follow up question.

Question "Perché non l'hanno tenuto in prigione" would translate to "why didn't they keep him in jail" or could it also be "why didn't they keep her in jail"
@99problemi6 жыл бұрын
It is only equivalent to the first sentence. The l' stands for lo and is therefore masculine singular. If you wanted to say "why didn't they keep her in jail", you would need to write "Perché non l'hanno *tenuta* in prigione" -- the l' stands for la when the past participle ends in -a.
@amdherc006 жыл бұрын
@@99problemi I thought the past participle didn't need to change with avere only with essere
@99problemi6 жыл бұрын
@@amdherc00 You are correct, however when using a direct object with the passato prossimo conjugated with avere, the ending of the past participle reflects the gender and number of the direct object.

I'm probably the only person here who isn't learning Italian because I want to. I'm forced to because I live in a bilingual area (next to Italy of course). I have to say I've been taught passato prossimo like 3 times before and never got the avere/essere use. The "acts upon an object" really helped, thanks. And for anyone wondering I have been learning Italian since the first grade so 9 years plus 1 of middle school (the current, 4 more to go) and i can confirm the schools method of teaching languages is dog shit.
@trimmien23507 жыл бұрын
I lost focus for a second and looked back at the video at around 6:35. While I'm new to Italian, I definitely recognized "caerse" and "morir" from Spanish- a very disturbing experience.
@99problemi7 жыл бұрын
It's also disturbing that "Casa di Essere" requires a human sacrifice so you can learn proper Italian - that is, a person falls out a window and dies in order to provide you with an effective mnemonic device for remembering an auxiliary verb - that's messed up!
