Air travel is enjoying a post-pandemic boom. But you might not get that impression in Germany - with some airports, like Berlin, operating far under capacity. One of Europe's biggest airlines, Ryanair, has been cutting back services. Eddie Wilson, CEO of the Irish low-cost carrier, tells DW that German airports simply aren't making enough effort to bring back passengers. Above all, they are too expensive - costing passengers 60 euros just to walk through Frankfurt airport.

@@SonnyDarvishzadehoh nooo I would haaaate to sit backwards in a train, what a nightmare!! Haha seriously? Plus airlines already have a financial advantage over other means of transport. No tax on jet fuel but tax on fuel for buses... So they already run an unfair advantage, no wonder they can offer cheaper prices. All routes that can be done by train in under 6 hours should be forbidden.. Germany already has a high speed rail network, why would you fly from Leipzig to Munich for example when you could take the train for 3 hours.. Literally faster from inner city to inner city than flying if you include the time to get to and from the airport, going through security etc. I have no problem for flights from Stockholm to Paris for example or Warsaw to Lisbon. It's the short haul flights that are the problem.. Hannover to Frankfurt is a great example, Leipzig to Munich as well.. Your point literally makes no sense..

@@dwee3005 Do you live in Germany? I like to travel by train but German trains are exceptionally unreliable. I regularly miss my connections because of all kinds of delays and cancellations, and often arrive at my destinations more than one hour late. The best way to attract people to take the trains is to make the trains more punctual and reliable, instead of making air fares unaffordable. I travelled from Germany to London earlier this week. If I made that trip by train, I would need to book two tickets, one from Germay to Paris, another from Paris to London. Yet I think there would be at least a 50 percent chance that my train to Paris runs late, and I would miss my train to London.

But the Lufthansa ticket includes checked baggage, the airline PRINTS YOUR BOARDING PASS ( you don’t have to print it yourself) , you will get a beverage (and (perhaps) a sandwich or snack for flights over 90 minutes . If your flight gets cancelled, the airline reschedules you onto the next available or alternate flight through a star alliance partner to your final destination. This has happened to me. I was rescheduled onto another LH flight from Poland to Munich ( instead of via Frankfurt) to get to my final destination due to storms over Frankfurt.

I see MOL point that German government is protecting Lufthansa. However, comparing Berlin and Dublin airport doesn't make a lot of sense. Opposed to Dublin, Berlin is no hub for a single airline and never meant to be a hub. Also Berlin doesn't have a strong business traveler demand, for a city it's size, thanks to the cities history. It's solely a destination airport. If Berlin was an island, there would be more flights the rest of Germany. Except for few destination it just doesn't make sense to fly form Berlin to domestic destination because of train and motorway competition. Where as Dublin is on a island, and a considerable amount of flights are very short flights to the UK, because there is no time competitive alternative. Furthermore it's a hub for Aer Lingus.

Taxes in German airports are an inhibitor to air travel, but equally contributing to the lower air-traveller volumes come from their extremely well connected rail network. ICE trains take you anywhere within Germany within 5-6 hours from Berlin at half the fares, including luggage. Since DB is public entity, there's much less incentive for the Government to try to lift the aviation sector in favour of low cost carriers not based out of Germany. But of course, this is only for domestic travellers.

Wilson generally has good points, but there is one huge thing I'm going to disagree with him on. Eliminating taxes is dumb, but he will suggest that because it is self-serving, and he's a businessman. Taxes shouldn't be obscene, but they shouldn't be abolished. Something we do in the US that Europe might want to consider if it doesn't have this already are tax incentives. Tax incentives work by negotiating with specific companies, either special rates or sometimes breaks (0% tax) for a pre-set amount of time with an understanding that the business will stay after the exceptions run out and pay the full tax rates. In addition, they often come in exchange for a guaranteed local investment that helps set those taxes via income taxes from corporate jobs and public works projects undertaken by the corporations (for example, when building new facilities, it might involve upgrading existing public infrastructure such as power, water, and sewage lines in certain regions, repaving roads, buildings parks, etc.) Airliners can help upgrade terminals, for example, by adding power outlets and modernizing toilets, which generally cost less than the savings and are easier for private corporations to handle because they bypass the public bidding process and shift the liability from the government to the business.

Trains are generally way more comfortable than planes, not sure how you can argue that one for most of Europe. Faster, sure, but I would argue that under 3h train ride, they will generally beat a plane at that distance since you need to factor in waiting at the airport and that trains usually put you in the city while airports are built outside of it.

Berlin is the capital of Germany but in terms of aviation it's a regional airport, as Lufthansa and other airlines have hubs elsewhere. Anyway, Michael O'Leary has been moaning about this for years and just doesn't get that airport taxes are high because the government policy is to let people move from flights to trains for environmental reasons, as France and Netherlands are also trying to do. It means less cheap flights and it will encourage people to use trains instead. (Well, in case of Germany Deutsche Bahn is in a total mess, so the government really needs to put in more money into the rail infrastructure.)

Ryanair is not a small airline, it's 182m passengers putting it at highest passenger count in Europe in 2023 and is valued at $22.7bn, Lufthansa is in second place with 123 million and $8.7bn. 2. Frankfurt one you pay more than you save to get to Ryanairs airport due to distance, and Ryanair helped invest in Frankfurt-Hahn (the alternative airport). 3. That price comparison with average is interesting, usually like half a ticket price a passenger pays is airport/other taxes, then comparing it without taxes in the next sentence is misleading.

When Wilson discussed the German security fees, he didn't talk much about why they are so high and any practical solution beyond subsidizing them upfront and hoping that higher traffic makes up for it. Subsidizing up front is easy, fast, and doesn't involve the airlines, so it makes sense he will go for that, but a far better solution is addressing why the costs are so high. Germany has some of the dumbest security in the world for decades. People make fun of the TSA, but the TSA is more efficient to the point that the Germans can learn from them. For one, Germany has some of the strictest restrictions on what cannot be brought on a flight, much of which is objectively unnecessary but also which can be eliminated as a threat by more modern equipment (something that airliners can offer to help upgrade for incentives). Even without the equipment, they go through so many unnecessary steps.; the biggest one is you have to go through security multiple times. When you have a layover in Germany with a connecting flight, you need to pass through security at least once, or in my case in Frankfort, twice. I flew through Frankfort on a Lufthansa flight with a connecting flight with Lufthansa. I had a half-finished jar of hair gel that was 0.2oz too big, but their scanners couldn't tell the exact size, so the German officers manually went through all my bags, not just the one with the jar, just to throw out a jar of hair gel;.Even worse, they made me toss a sealed water bottle I got on the Lufthansa flight. What a waste of time. Besides that, they insisted on padding down everyone who passed through the metal detector regardless of whether it went off, which begs the question of what the point of the metal detector is if they are going to ignore it. They then did it in the least efficient way possible. Any security official would tell you that you do not need to check the band of the pants and underwear and pat down the body completely 360, but honestly, that wasn't even the worst part. I wore an N95 mask and a kippa. They made me turn the mask that sits right up against my face and the kippa, a thin piece of cloth with a diameter of maybe 5 inches that sits on the dome of your head, inside out. It would have made more sense to check my hair than my kippa. The whole thing took them like 6 minutes, and they did it for everyone. Then, once you passed, you walked 15 meters to a holding area where, before going into the sleeve, you had to go through the boarding gate where they checked everyone again sans their bags even though security had already checked the passport and boarding pass and the only way in is through security that is literally 15 meters away and separated by a glass wall.

It isn't going to magically fix itself, you need to invest in it. Why should there be flights from Hannover to Frankfurt or Leipzig to Munich when you can easily take a high speed train in a few hours. Germany should follow Frances lead and ban all short haul flights which can be done by train instead within a certain time frame, say 5-6 hours.. smarter not harder !

1. Ryanair is not a "low cost airline". It's a "lower service, lower cost" airline 2. The German tax of c. EU15.00 would not deter 99% of people from making a trip 3. Not answering the environmental question is telling, and shows that this CEO doesn't understand his market (re-listen to what he says. He doesn't acknowlege that the airline industry is one of the most polluting. He's trying to put lipstick on a pig ). 4. This CEO should be fired : he's doing the wrong strategy ( no wonder Ryanair shares have gone nowhere in the last year. Literally up 0.09% in the past 12 months as of 16:00 CET, 30/08/24 ). He touts $3Bn worth of planes based in Germany as a good thing from his company's viewpoint. It's a disaster. They've over invested in a climate of austerity, high interest rates, and low demand. The airline tax has nothing to do with that. The planning and strategy department at Ryanair should be fired en masse. He has too much supply, and is begging the German government to subsidise his business in a low growth economy. He should be denied. 5. Boeing doesn't have new management in place. A long serving exec will be the new CEO. And the current CEO is still in charge until the end of the year. There are strategic problems with Boeing, and that won't be fixed quickly 6. Ryanair is a European based airline. Europe will be the lowest growth region for the next 10 years vs Americas/ Africa/ Asia. They've reached saturation. They have viable and strong competition from other airlines. There is pressure to limit air flights for environmental reasons. If Ryanair wants to grow profits, it needs less aircraft, and use them more efficiently 7. He's being a bit rich complaining of a EU15.00 security fee when taking on a small bag costs EU23:00 with Ryanair for zero additional incremental cost. 8. His classic argument of a race to the bottom on costs only benefits Ryanair, and does nothing for the regions it serves. Suck up the price Ryanair. And when people figure out that the marginal cost to use a full service airline, they will go there. That's the real reason this guy wants the regions to do away with much needed costs. In summary : This CEO needs to be changed out. Michael, are you listening ?

forget about Ryanair, so you mean sitting with empty airport and waiting for some messiah airlines is a good idea? He may speaks for his own interest but this is true that Berlin and Frankfurt both airports are far below its capacity. Hahn ,weeze, memimgen , once bustling airports are now at the verge of closing. No airlines is interested to ressurect them. Who is suffering from all these ? ultimately German people are spending lot more to reach their destination in other ways . travelling alternative by train is a lame excuse firstly it is more expensive than cheap airlines, and only if someone wants to spend 48 hours on train from Berlin to barcelona instead of a 2 hours flight out of his precious holiday time. Everyone thinks of Time more than ecological concern for an equivalent flight more than 1 hour.

It isn't the tax that needs to be cut, it's the social insurance. Far to Many German pensioners are receiving too much money. Pension shouldn't be paid so people can take a nice holiday to Mallorca, the pension should be there to pay for rent, utility bills and food.. not holidays. Many pensioners in Germany are receiving 2000€ + per month per person.. And who is paying for that, lower and middle class workers. We all know the upper class don't pay their fair share

@@dwee3005 I think many pensioners worked for it and deserve their pension, at least the ones in the west and those in the east who started working past 1990 - they worked hard, they can decide how they spend their money and if they wanna have a nice life because they can then it’s up to them - coming to think about it, in my city I see other pensioners collecting bottles for the deposit after dark, strange that everyone here knows they’ve been working all their life, if not in very good jobs. I think inequality is the problem, and everyone should get higher pensions. You tell me, should people who only sold sausage and cheese at a grocery store move into smaller apartments and collect from the garbage once they retire? Then explain them you want their monthly budget to be smaller and why, not me. Either you are not from Germany or have never been living anywhere else. But the social security is not the problem.
