When William Afton ACTUALLY Died in the FNAF Timeline (FNAF 3 Theory)

There are many events in the Five Nights at Freddy’s timeline that are hotly debated and some that have a general consensus, and one event that I thought fell into the consensus category is apparently significantly more up for debate than I initially thought.
The death of William Afton aka the Purple Guy is a central event for the series, but the when of the event seems to be interpreted by many as being after FNAF 1. However, if that is the case, it would directly contradict something set up in the very same game we find out about his death thanks to Phone Guy’s springlock training tapes.
So, what evidence is there for when William Afton dies and becomes Springtrap? Looks like you’ll have to watch and find out :D

@@IDsFantasy Wait. What if the phone guy never actually died? In FNAF 1. We never actually can 100% confirm that the phone guy died. Plus there’s something that’s bugging me about some of the FNAF 2 phone calls. Mainly being how he mentions about the lack of doors. WHY WOULD HE SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF A LOCATION THAT DOES HAVE THEM?! Plus in the FNAF 2 newspaper. It literally states that the restaurant was built on top of the ashes of the old one. For FNAF 2 to happen before FNAF 1. We must of had a location BEFORE those events and AFTER 1983… There’s no way for a restaurant to be built in the span of less then 2 years. Considering that the FNAF 2 location would of taken… 2 Years to build by my calculations.

There's Fredbear's Family Diner, which Phone Guy mentions, and there's the location the Missing Children Incident happened at, which is definitely before FNAF 2. Not to mention, Freddy's is a chain restaurant, so there likely were multiple locations.

That's an excellent point! Since the map layout matches FNAF 1 the FNAF 1 animatronics were made from the withereds, it could be that they were redesigned after William dismantled them! That's actually really cool, I hadn't noticed that

The Logbook confirms that we do play as Michael in FNAF 1, since it seems to be primarily FNAF 1 themed and the "Mike" who writes in it draws the basket of exotic butters, so yep!

I think Scott absolutely intended to have the FNAF 3 minigames after FNAF 1, the trailer for the game literally shows the classic trio, implying they have some sort of relevance to the game's story, which would be getting destroyed by Afton; some people think the animatronics are an unseen generation of robots that we only see in these minigames, but it was clear that the intention was that the destroyed characters are the ones from the first game. There's also a simple explanation for Phone guy being alive and mentioning the safe room being closed, the training tapes he made were recorded at the time of the Missing children incident: according to the Newspapers in FNAF 1, the killer was caught on camera, and the police even suspected that the culprit used a costume, this suspicion was confirmed since Phone guy noticed that Spring Bonnie was slightly moved; so, some time after the MCI, it was decided that nobody in the establishment would use the springsuits as a precaution. Years later, William knocked down the fake wall, died, and his body was never found before FNAF 3 because, well, the location was closed at the time. I don't think this makes it all redundant, because it added importance to Spring Bonnie at the time, being sealed up for being the murder suit.

I have to disagree on multiple points. The reason the classic trio is shown is because they have relevance to the game's story yes, but William dying before FNAF 1 doesn't mean the classics would be irrelevant to the story. I agree that it is the FNAF 1 animatronics that are shown in the minigames, and that they're relevant in that way, and I also think the classics are relevant in how the Phantom animatronics look similar to them, they're the ones possessed by the MCI kids, and the fact that the Happiest Day minigames are in FNAF 3 However, I find it much more likely that he dismantled the animatronics previous to FNAF 1 and then the animatronics were repaired then he somehow managed to tear down an entire false wall and stick it back up. It wouldn't make sense for all of the training tapes to be as of the MCI. The first few training tapes are definitely before the MCI, and it feels like it would be a bit weird for them to be made one day after the other since first it's instructions on how to use the suits, then 'oh yeah, we aren't using them', then talking about it being moved. If the suit was sealed because of it's use in the murders, how did William get ahold of Spring Bonnie to get springlocked? Again, a false wall is still an actual wall, and one guy isn't going to be able to tear it down. Not to mention the tapes were found in the FNAF 1 location with Springtrap. Why would they be there unless they were relevant to that location? Why would there be a fake wall there if the location didn't exist as of the MCI. Add in how it seems a springlock suit was used in FNAF 2, it had already been decided that no one would use springlock suits, Phone Guy saying the suit had been a spare, yet the Golden Freddy and Spring Bonnie ended up in FNAF 1, and I don't think Spring Bonnie was sealed just for being used in the murders, even if it wasn't the one used in FNAF 2. If the suits weren't sealed off after the 'multiple simultaneous springlock failures', which would have also been a pretty big public scandal since it got their use discontinued, I don't see why the suit would be sealed and not just destroyed. We already knew that it was a murder suit based on other things, which would make the wall being just for that purpose very redundant, so why have a wall put up only for it to not actually do anything besides get torn down? It feels significantly more likely that the room would be sealed to hide something, such as a dead body, rather than hide a suit. Plus it makes more sense storywise for the wall to go up as the end of Springtrap's story before FNAF 3 since that seems to be the whole point of the tapes in the first place. That's the final tape, so it makes sense for that to explain why Springtrap also didn't bother to *leave* the location after decades. Given how much he moves around in FNAF 3, I don't think William would intentionally hang around the FNAF 1 location for 30 years unless he literally had no choice thanks to the room being sealed off. Like I mentioned in the video, there is evidence that can go either way, but I don't think an entire fake wall is one of them, you know? Thank you for commenting! I appreciate it :D

@@IDsFantasy If that shot in the trailer is supposed to hint at something before FNAF 1, that means Fazbear Ent. built four new models of the animatronics only to leave them in an abandoned building that leaks from its ceiling and has rats roaming around freely before waking up one day and finally deciding to actually open it for business. It would make more sense if the classics were abandoned after they served their purpose, instead of just being forgotten about for a while and THEN being used. Of course, Phone guy's tapes weren't all being recorded during the MCI, there would probably be a big time gap between the introduction of springsuits at Freddy's, the incident and the suits being banned, what I meant to say was that they were recorded roughly in that era of Freddy's, and yes, the FNAF 1 location DID exist as of the MCI, it might actually be the original Freddy's: -Phone guy references doors and limited power in FNAF 2, in 1987; -The Foxy go go go minigame shows pirate cove, the only time we've canonically seen Foxy's cove is in FNAF 1's pizzeria. -Fazbear Ent. planned to reopen on a smaller budget at the end of FNAF 2, what better way to save up some construction money than to re-use an old location? (It can also nostalgia bait old costumers, which is something this type of company would do, a reboot of their old stuff, "just like how you remember it from your childhood!" if you will.) Then we have the "Yellow one" in FNAF 2, how did William use a springsuit when many of them were sealed? Because not all of them were abandoned: "the previously mentioned safe rooms, are being sealed at *most* locations."; Not every location was closed, and we know there are multiple versions of Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, William could have used say, the Scraptrap suit, it wasn't the Spring Bonnie used for the first MCI, so it wasn't as controversial to keep it. Why would you keep the suits? The same reason the withereds were used, for spare parts, that's why PG refers to the "Yellow one" as "A *spare* in the back". Then we have Afton running around like the psychotic person he is, why didn't he leave the FNAF 1 location in 3 decades if he could move around? Because he couldn't, in the 30 years in between 1 and 3 he was lying there dead, how can he move around with ease if he wasn't moving around before 3? The same reason why he still has flesh despite rotting for 30 years and why he has bones and a normal head with ears in FNAF 6, remnant healed him after fusing with Spring Bonnie's endo. As for the wall being knocked out by William seemingly being impossible, the fake wall might have been a small wooden wall that can be broken with an axe, besides that, it's not hard to believe that William broke a wall, he literally rips metallic robots into pieces in the minigames, he probably has a strong tool with him.

@@ReadTheManga7 The reason the FNAF 1 animatronics are relevant is because the Phantoms look like them, their souls are relevant to Happiest Day, and because they're the ones William dismantled. I don't see how that contradicts that William dismantled them before FNAF 1? It makes more sense to me that the animatronics got reassembled than an entire false wall that was supposed to hide the existence of a room and needed a construction company to put up in the first place. The animatronics were repaired once from the withereds, so that would make more sense to me. Also, I'd that's the case, why didn't William leave in the 30 years before FNAF 1 and FNAF 3? If he tore down the wall when the place had already closed, no one would have put the wall back up so he would have been able to just walk on out. If the place wasn't already closed and they put up a new wall again, it seems weird and redundant to me in terms of the flow of the story. Why bother storywise having the wall there only for it to be useless in keeping William from getting to the one specific suit that it supposedly was built for, you know?

When phone guy dies we hear him die. This has to mean he was recording this or talking no later than that same day. If he died there would be another security guard to come in after him unless they hadn’t had time to hire a new one. We wouldn’t be hired as a night time security guard first, there’d be something telling us the day slot isn’t occupied any longer. They also wouldn’t let a tape recording of their now deceased employee continue to be used as the training guide for the new recruit, especially since it outright lets us know the animatronics are doing the killing and therefore we either wouldn’t be allowed to come into work or they’d get rid of the recording because it’s evidence. Therefore phone guy had to have died that week at the longest and would mean William would still have to be before or during Fnaf one

The only thing I can add is the spring locking probably happened pretty much simultaneously to sister location, beacuse before the events of the fifth game William told Micheal to go rescue this sister and soon after the game william had to go missing beacuse Michael promised to find him, and unless William left a note or something which just doesn't have any evidence for it he'd probably have to be alive to tell mike that, and it just makes sense to me that he would tell Michael to go do that right before going to rip apart a bunch of haunted murderous animatronics on his own, sort of as a last wish in case he didn't make it out alive, and it's was a good thing because he didnt

I have thoughts on this that I think would work better for an actual video than for a super long comment, but I'll summarize. Long story short, I see pretty much no way the Springlocking happens at the same time as Sister Location, since with Sister Location being the start of Michael's arc trying to find his father, it makes sense that FNAF 1-3 is him attempting to do just that, especially if his odor in both 1 and 2 was strong enough that it was listed as a reason for his firing. William was active in FNAF 2, so he hadn't been springlocked yet since the 1 location hadn't been built and I don't see much reason for Mike to be in the 2 location if SL hadn't happened for him yet. My thought is that Mike went to various Freddy's that had rumors going around that hinted at Will being there, and that's why he was always slightly too late. It's very possible that when William told Michael to go save Elizabeth, he ditched soon after. That or Michael was living on his own and William did in fact leave a message. There's just as much evidence for the message as there is for him telling Mike in person after all since all we have to go off of is "just like you asked me to". I've got more thoughts as well, but those are some big ones. It just makes the most sense to me this way narratively, you know? Thank you for commenting :D

Honestly. I can think of a way that explains sister location in the timeline. William mailed the request to Michael some time before he died. This would explain why Michael doesn’t know what happened to his dad YET. And explain the motivation of why Michael visited it.

@@ninja6245-real Yep. The way I see it, Mike was probably told in some way by William before FNAF 2 to go to SL, and William had either already disappeared or disappeared shortly after. When Mike got scooped, he said he would find his father, explaining why he shows up basically a day after William is hinted to be in FNAF 2, and why he shows up in FNAF 1. Too bad for Mike his dad *was* there, just not somewhere Mike could actually find him...

​@@XD-yn6hb I did some thinking on that detail on my own time when I realized it was a slight contradiction to Michael being a zombie in the first game, why does he have human eyes with blue pupils when he dies rather than the black eyes witn white pupils that's shown in the sister location cutscene? I have two answers: 1. The ghost eyes purple Michael has are purely an artistic representation to show that he's possessed for the purposes of minigame and in reality he has more normal eyes 2. He really does have the black eyes but they revert to their original form when he dies, its shown that sometimes a soul possessing a suit can physically change the animatronic, like with the Puppets tear streaks and Baby's green eyes, maybe Michael possessing himself changes the eyes but when he dies for good and his soul leaves his body they go back

Now that I think about it, it does make sense. William "died" in the Springbonnie suit, and phone guy does mention the safe room is being sealed. It's never stated why it's being sealed, but it's obvious to assume that Henry was the one who ordered the safe room to be sealed. He was the other founder of Fazbear Entertainment. What sucks, is that the phone guy that talks about the horror attraction, ends his call talking about Springtrap, and we don't know what happened to him.

I don't know if it would be Henry ordering the room to be sealed, since as of FNAF 2, Phone Guy says that they were trying to get in contact with the original owner, implying Henry isn't too involved or is no longer the owner, but yeah, the room was probably sealed to hide the body lol. And technically, we do know what happened to Phone Guy since he dies in FNAF 1. Unless you're talking about Phone Dude, in which case yep

That's part of why I said it could go either way. The thing is, we don't actually know that the place is shut down during those minigames, just that the location is closed and the safe room is open. I find it more likely that they just repaired the animatronics after William broke them, because otherwise it wouldn't make sense for Phone Guy to be alive when the wall was put up, and if the place was closed, no one would have bothered to put up a wall. I have always been confused on when William died and I really do think the evidence you bring up is pretty great and it makes sense! It just makes me confused- So technicians definitely had to fix the animatronics afterwards, but they still went after Mike during FNAF 1. I always assumed it was a mix of the souls and the actual animatronic AIs going after you, as Michael stated "They thought I was you", and it would make sense for why the souls would go after their killer. But if William died before FNAF 1, why would they confuse Michael for William? Wouldn't they already know William's dead? The FNAF timeline is so confusing x-x

The "They thought I was You" quote only applies to the Sister Location animatronics. The MCI animatronics on the other hand will attack any adult whether or not they look like William, hence why they attack Jeremy and Phone Guy. This is backed up by the novels where they would do just that, leading to them attacking the main characters of The Silver Eyes, but not William because he was dressed as Spring Bonnie, making them think he was one of them, which probably also explains why he got in the springlock suits while being chased. The only issue is that phone guy's calls in Fnaf 1 are recordings, and he outright states that they are. And besides, unless he was calling from a separate location, it wouldn't really make much sense for the phone guy to be the one dying when you're the one in the office

In FNAF 1, yes, they are recordings. He also says he's the one who worked in that office before you/Mike. I'm not really sure why that matters though since either way that would put the room being sealed with William inside before the events of FNAF 1 since we find out about Phone Guy's death as of FNAF 1 Thank you for commenting :D

FNAF 2 is a Prequel, and Phone Guy specifically states "Especially concerning any previous employees" which indicates William was outed as a criminal even before FNAF 1. Not even mentioning Sister Location where they interrogate William on his "design choices" Also if i remember right in FNAF 1 you can see the Sealed off room which should indicate the location was reopened with him inside

Yeah, FNAF 2 is a prequel. That's why I put this in between FNAF 2 and FNAF 1. You can't see the safe room on the cams based on Phone Guy's dialogue I believe, but yeah, the location was opened with William stuck in there 😅 There's also how the animatronics in the mini games have buttons like their pre-FNAF 1 designs :D

I think they just in general don't trust adults after what happened to them, hence why they don't exclusively attack Mike and William, but also Phone Guy and Jeremy

In my opinion this makes a lot of sense, meaning that he's actual spring like death occurs either simultaneously with sister location or FNAF 2 (depending on how much time you account for between William abandoning his family and actually dying (sister location being that the reason he never went home and needs to be found is that he died and FNAF 2 would be if he abandoned his family before he becomes springtrap)

The biggest problem I have with this theory is that it doesn't make sense how the FNaF 1 animatronics are still possessed in FNaF 1 if their souls were set free from the suits. Since they got dismantled and we see the souls apart from the animatronics, how would they end up back inside the animatronics?

This makes a lot of sense! Though while the saferoom was announced to be sealed Phone Guy mentions to not show the Saferoom to customers, meaning the place had to be open, while the minigames show a rundown clearly abandoned building. This means the Saferoom had to be sealed after the place was abandoned, but before FNaF 2 is built, as FNaF 2 has no saferoom at all, it was never built with one. We need William's death to be: Before the Saferoom is sealed, before FNaF 2 is built and before Phone Guy dies.

If you remember that the withered animatronics were kept after fnaf 2 (and the toys scrapped however pieces were presumably kept due to the box in the fnaf 3 office. Could it be that the withered animatronics were repaired for intended use in the fnaf one location however William destroying them left the company to create new animatronics in a rush which is why the fnaf 1 animatronics have much more simplistic endoskeletons. However if the saferoom and presumably the entire building is run down to the point on rain indoors then how could it be any time other than a few years after the closing of the fnaf 1 location. Unless the building was undergoing repairs in preparation for the reopening however if that were the case how would william be able to get inside unnoticed

I thought that the kids were looking for William in fnaf 1, I think that the safe room was a room where they kept the spring lock suits and got sealed up before fnaf 1 due to an accident, if the dead body was found, they probably would have closed Freddy Fazbears due to health concerns, William died after, when Fazbears was presumably closed, then it would make more sense

Maybe he came there when the pizzeria was opened for the first time, or maybe the fnaf 1 location was opened two times. Like, it closed because of the destruction of the animatronics and William's death and then it opened after they rebuilt the animatronics, considering that William didn't make major damage to the animatronic suits. That would explain why Freddy has a button in the minigame and in the game he doesn't, they simply weren't able to find it while rebuilding him

That seems much more likely to me than William tearing down the wall after FNAF 1 since if the place was abandoned no one would have bothered to fix the wall, so he'd have no reason to stick around for the next 30 years. my theory was originally that william afton was the player in night 1-5 and because william got springlocked they replaced the night guard with mike schmidt and they just redesigned the characters. i would say it takes place at the same time of the events of FNAF 1. edit: i now agree with the theory in this video and i think the animatronics that got destroyed by afton and got lured to springlock are the withered animatronics and the FNAF 1 animatronics are just a redesign and i think that mike schmidt was the night guard. but why did creepy nights at freddys make william afton the player? or maybe... there are more purple guys in the FNAF universe thats why in creepy nights at freddys one purple guy sees an other purple guy get springlocked

The phone call where phone guy announces the backrooms being sealed off is in an old tape in Fnaf 3 though.. Those tapes were made when Fredbear's Family Diner was still running. Also in the recordings immediately before that one, he talks about the MCI. So the Backrooms were sealed after the MCI. My only guess is that William tore down the wall to the backroom, got springlocked and upon being found, they sealed up the wall again.

And if all the calls were from Fredbear's era, why would the room be sealed so hastily with no one allowed to go in and get their belongings? Why say it's for budget restrictions (which are a mentioned factor for after FNAF 2)? If it's just to hide springlock suits everyone knows about, people would be allowed to go in and get their belongings before the room is sealed, not to mention a springlock suit is present in FNAF 2. If it's to stop another MCI, something publicly known about, why not just say for safety? Why have *that* be the final call in FNAF 3 if it had nothing to do with Springtrap being there? Cuz if the wall was built before the minigames and William just destroyed it, nothing would be stopping William from just walking out after being springlocked and it would serve no important story purpose and wouldn't change anything if not mentioned. There's the assumption that the last call was for the MCI, but just because all the calls are played at the same time doesn't mean they were recorded at the same time. The fact that they were found in the FNAF 1 location leads me to believe at least one was recorded there, or that all of them were, just at different points in time with the building being reused after budget cuts post FNAF 2. Plus, why have the call about the wall be the final one in the game about Springtrap if it didn't actually impact Springtrap? If there was no wall to keep him trapped, William could have just walked out. Plus Phone Dude had to be told by someone that there was a boarded up room, so the entrance was definitely hidden by the time he got there, and I don't think a wall was put up twice As for Sister Location, due to the Logbook being taken by someone after Mike had it who left a note saying to not mention springlock suits to anyone, he had to have written in it before Freddy's closed so that it would be repossessed by someone at the company, and the fact that he drew exotic butters implies SL was before FNAF 1. I haven't seen any evidence for a specific date for SL additionally, I made a follow up video to this with additional evidence kzbin.infone4YxX-GhY0?feature=share I get that FuntimesMCI is a popular theory, but if it is the case, it would just be their Remnant and not the souls being fully transferred over, which does make sense since the kids are present in the FNAF 1 location to chase William into the Spring Bonnie suit, and they're present for either Happiest Day or the Bad Ending of FNAF 3. The Ultimate Guide says The Fourth Closet gives "an idea" for how Molten Freddy came to be, not that it is definitive canon, and it's notes on Follow Me are only that William seems to be confirmed to collect Remnant. It never says if he got to use the Remnant. Hopefully that clears up my thoughts some. I just can't bring myself to ignore the story significance of the final call, or the design details for the animatronics in the minigame. What I think is that, he got spring locked and the people on the outside repaired the broken animatronics, where then the souls are forced back in. Then when Mike is night guarding, they think that Mike is William and try to kill him every night

i mean, it depends, just to offer a different side to this, in Italy it's waaay more than common to seal and unseal rooms, i did so just 8 month ago when i bought my shop, apparently they sealed half of it because "it didn't suit their style, too big", and the basement has a sealed canteen too

He died before Fnaf 1, and not many know this fact but in fnaf 1 sometimes the player can hear banging against a wall, perhaps drywall or whatever Fazbear Ent. Used to block the wall. I believe it’s Springtrap trying to scream and plead for help from his son whom at the time is working there, but unfortunately the room is sound proof…

It has to be before fnaf 1, since he dismantles the withered animatronics to build his own pizzeria now that henry had quit. As he builds it, he still plans to * oof * kids , and he realizes he forgets his springbonnie suit back in the fnaf 2 location, ao he goes back to get it , and well, the rest is history.

Turns out Freddy doesn't have a button in fnaf 1 while the one on the minigame does so William dismantling the animatronics before fnaf 1 would give a pretty good explanation for this discrepancy

Small issue, in FNaF 1, tje animatronics aren't taken apart, meaning it can't be before FNaF 1, it HAS to be after the events of FNaF 1

Nope. The withereds had to get their redesigns somehow, and in the minigames the animatronics have buttons like the withereds, so that means they hadn't gotten their FNAF 1 designs yet. Not to mention the company very likely has mechanics and such on staff to repair their main attractions if necessary.

One thing to always keep in mind is that fnaf 1 likely wasn’t made with the intention/foresight to have the deep lore it has today due to the game being Scott’s last ditch effort to jumpstart his game dev career.

Sure, but FNAF 3 was planned, and that's where the call appeared, and whether or not things were planned, the events of FNAF 1 still happened and Scott worked with them 🤷‍♀️
