I Solved MatPat's Sister Location Problem - FNAF Theory

Recently, Game Theory has been releasing their Ultimate Five Nights at Freddy’s timeline. However, there was one part of the lore that MatPat seemed particularly stumped on, and that was the timeline placement of Sister Location, and whether it comes before or after FNAF 2 and FNAF 1.
In that video, MatPat asked the viewers to leave a comment explaining what they thought might have been the solution, but as I feel like my thoughts are more likely to be seen in a video rather than a comment and I’ve been planning to tackle Sister Location for a while, here we are.
So when is Sister Location? When were Circus Baby’s and the Funtimes made? When did William Afton get spring locked? What’s up with Michael? Stay tuned and find out!

I used to always doubt that Scott had a cohesive story from the beginning (since it seems like every new game flips widely accepted theories on their heads). But then I started DMing, and my group would walk into a room and wildly misinterpret what was going on. So I’d try and drop more hints to steer them in the correct direction, but somehow those hints either reinforced their wrong ideas, or spawned new ones. To be clear, they’re all smart people, and they spend a long time discussing possibilities. It is just extremely hard to leave breadcrumbs and have them be correctly interpreted, because you already know the answer so you won’t know how your clues will come across to fresh eyes. And since Scott knows a lot of fnaf’s appeal is it’s mystery, he would rather give not enough info rather than too much.

I think Scott actually had an entirely cohesive story until FNAF 3, and I think the glue starts to age late FNAF 4. Then stuff started getting really wishy washy.

If Afton's death comes before FNAF 1, that might explain why the animatronics try to stuff you in an animatronic suit. If they chased William into the suit and saw him die and they mistake the player for him, they might be trying to recreate his death to make make sure he's dead.

I’m so glad you brought up the exotic butters drawing in the logbook. People often talk about the drawing of Nightmare Fredbear in theorycrafting, but people tend to overlook other parts of that book. Also, I love the idea that William was springlocked and sealed pre-FNAF 1 just for the sheer dramatic irony of it. Mike and William were in the same building for a whole week, but Mike couldn’t find him because everyone had to be hush-hush about the saferooms.

Look I could be totally wrong about what I am about to say. First of all I also like the theory that William died before fnaf 1 and that his dismantle of the animatronics led to a rebuilt for fnaf 1. The thing that confuses me is what would be Henry’s motivation to close down the fnaf 1 pizzeria if her theory is true. I could say that it could be the smell of the animatronics with dead children but I ain’t too sure about it

I also like that theory. It kind of explains a minor detail in fnaf one. and that is how in fnaf one you can randomly hear a banging noise in the background, which is distinct from those made by foxy or the animatronic's movements. Under this theory, the sound couldve actually been william, now as springtrap, trying to call for help from inside the now sealed saferoom

As his face was gone in all of FNAF 2, if FOLLOW ME happens before the classics are redesigned / rebuilt, Bonnie should be missing his face. Honestly, I don't mind matpats timeline-problems. he makes good stories out of the crumbs we get in fnaf and make for very entertaining and interesting videos. in fact, those are my favorite videos the Theorists make. Thank you for this video! It’s been my personal interpretation for years for the same reasons you mentioned here. My other main gripe with the matpat theory is that it completely ignores Michael’s relationship with cb’s entertainment+rental; he claims that Michael just stumbled upon it and discovered everything before getting scooped? However we know that Mike *clearly* works there. Not only does he enter his name into the keypad, get his pay docked and get offered the complementary basket (which we see he does receive in the good ending), but he also presumably gets found by other real employees at the end of night 4 and doesn’t.. y’know, immediately get arrested for trespassing? He is clearly a real employee, he doesn’t just stumble upon it from a back entrance. Whether William set him up as an employee or not is another question, but that’s for another theory.

I always had this mentality, and although I know Scott didn't come up with every single tiny detail from the start, I feel like he always had at least the idea of the core story, by at least FNaF 4 (after the controversy). I believe this fact even more when FuhNaff (a KZbinr) made a discovery in FNAF world. This discovery was how a mini game (foxy.exe) suspiciously mirrored the new FNaF story very well. It basically mirrored glitchtrap's story, and I don't want to mention it all here as it would be too long, but I agree that it matched TOO well with how FNaF help wanted went down.

Well, the Game Theorists aren't just one person, even if MatPat is the figurehead. There's a whole team working on these theories, and even then there'll still be some holes. But I think this video quite well covers a way to explain it.

Sister Location fits perfectly before FNAF 2 but, it also fits perfectly AFTER FNAF 1... There are theories about Elizabeth Afton being born in 1983 and her voice in SL sounds very young, also there's an image in (i think) Special Delivery with Mangle, but in the background there's a crib, it could be reference to FNAF 4 where we see a toy broken in a girl's room (the toy is obviously Mangle or some toy version of it) but there's no Elizabeth in that game.. Probably (acording to this theory) because she was a baby (no pun intended lol) at the time, so when CBPW came to be, she would be a young girl.

I'm curious what about the other 5 children from FnaF 2, they could also offer remnant since there is 5 other animatronics that isn't possessed, the toys. They get thrown away after the game regardless so William or Michael could always go dumpster diving to their parts, leaving some parts like the face masks or a few pieces lost inside the trash

I heard of the theory that Michael just used an illusion disk. Wich would cover up his appearance but not his smell, hence the Odor complaint.

There were multiple retcons. Scrapping dream theory was one of them but that one happened right after fnaf 4. The one referred to in this video is about changing the gender of the child possessing the puppet from male to female because they were referred to as He back in fnaf 2 but in fnaf 6 they were retconned to be a girl

I've had such a difficult time trying to piece the timeline together, and although MatPat is entertaining, I'm not 100% sold on his timeline or theory videos. I would love to have a conversation with you sometime because so far your videos have been lifesavers! A question that I have for you is how many children were actually murdered, and how do we go about figuring it out? I've seen a lot of conflicting answers within the community ranging from just the 5 from the initial MCI to 15 or 20. What are your thoughts on this? Keep up the good work!

I love this analysis! never even considered the buttons on the Follow Me Sprites of Freddy and Bonnie to be the Withered animatronics being patched up after the closing of the 87' location. Watching the rise of new theorists makes this era of FNAF feel like a renaissance for the lore, looking deeper onto wording, symbolism, and crafting a genuine narritive out of every clue we have gathered. It makes me feel proud to follow this series, and you are already forming an imaginary group of FNAF theorists in my mind, who I dub "The Forensic Five", who include in this day and age: MatPat (The theorist forefather and the leader of Theorist discussion), RyeToast (The Baker of alternate interpretations of established lore), Sire Squawks (The Critical Eye of misunderstandings and misinterpretations), FuhNaff (The Master Imaginator of outside the locked box solutions), and you, ID's Fantasy (Investigator of left over mysteries). Thank you guys for providing some amazing interpretations, lore bits, and narritive pieces for this complex, yet astonishing franchise, I can't wait to see more of what you guys do next. P.S. We definitely need a deeper dive into Candy Cadet. It's clear that the theme of "5 things -> 1 thing" is just scratching the surface. Each story is different enough that I think you're on the right track with them referencing 3 different characters or events, they don't merge cleanly enough to all refer to one. Though I'm not sure about the 3 characters you chose, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Here's my 2 cents for each: The keys is the most clear: The woman had the option to save one life, got greedy and tried to save 5, but ended up dooming all 5. Interestingly she has a strange concept of reality, thinking that there was any possibility of melting 5 keys into 1 that could unlock all 5 doors. This could relate to another story with a bizarre logical leap, for example merging 5 possessed animatronics into 1 to save the 5 souls, in reality putting the 5 souls into 1 body making them more vengeful than before. The man is hard to interpret. He could have done nothing and risked one death, but trying to prevent that led to 5 deaths. Notably this story involves the 5>1 theme twice: The 5 children once lived separately, but the man brought them into one home. When the 5 died he stitched them together into one coffin. The boy and snake is even stranger. The boy had multiple chances to save some or all of the kittens but chose inaction in all cases, leading to all 5 dying. He could've left them outside, but didn't. He could've gotten rid of the snake to save all 5, but didn't. He could've chosen one kitten to sacrifice to save the other 4, but didn't. He could have take any of these actions at any time to save the remaining kittens, but didn't. When he was out of chances he finally took action, adding one more death to the pile by killing the snake. Notably this story plays with the 5>1 theme the most, merging and separating the kittens multiple times. They were brought inside into one shoebox, then separated as the snake ate them one by one, reunited inside the snake, separated again when the boy killed the snake to remove them, finally reunited one last time as the boy put them back together into the shoebox. This could turn out to be the most overlooked clue in the entire franchise, we could have a whole video (maybe even a 2-parter) just exploring this one clue in more detail.

I love FNaF 6 and Candy Cadet's stories so much, so the highlight of this video is, for me, how his stories are about Charlie, Michael and Henry. I don't know why, but that made me emotional, I had to pause... It makes so much sense! The stories were all about the inability to save, tragedy and regret... Aaah, it's so good! I think I'm stealing this idea as part of my FNaF headcanon now, heh.

Absolutely love this explanation, you did a phenomenal job here. Michael going to different Freddy's locations right after his father was there but turning up too late to catch him until fnaf 3 is so cool to me and makes so much sense story wise! I have only one big problem tho, if you're saying the Follow Me minigames happen before fnaf 2 then how does William go on another murder spree at the fnaf 2 location when he would've been springlocked already by that point? Unless you're saying that minigame happens between fnaf 2 and 1which would make more sense but still leave the question of how the Funtimes were possessed way before that event

Thank you!!! As for Follow Me being before FNAF 1, FNAF 2 is a prequel, as shown by Phone Guy being alive in that game while he dies before the end of FNAF 1. As for the Funtimes, technically we only know about Elizabeth having an actual spirit, and that the Scooper has Remnant, not necessarily Remnant with full blown souls attached. Plus the Funtimes did not lose their murder capabilities, so they could have gotten souls that way :D

Ahhh I see I see. I put the Follow Me mini games after FNAF 2, since it's in the FNAF 1 location, just with the withered animatronics fully repaired. That's why I called them the pre-FNAF 1 animatronics :D

Honestly this very question has been bothering the heck out of me for a few weeks now. You even brought all of the problems with different placements (specifically Phone Guy's death and Phone Guy talking about sealing the safe rooms, which everyone seems to forget...) Honestly this is probably the best explanation for everything. It's pretty close to my best guess (that the Fnaf 1 animatronics were only possessed with Agony, not actual spirits) but I think this works slightly better (honestly Molten MCI complicates things so much it's better it doesn't exist :P). You even brought up a detail that I missed being the buttons in the 8-bit Follow Me games. I noticed the designs of the Withereds differed quite a bit from the Fnaf 1 animatronics so what you said here was basically my guess, but this is some actual evidence that it was (always?) intentional and conveniently solves Fnaf 3 otherwise contradicting itself (thanks to Phone Guy's death making either placement impossible without the Fnaf 1 animatronics being rebuilt after Follow Me) I also really love the idea of Michael just barely missing his father at each location. There's something poetic about that. It just feels like it fits so much better (and honestly Fritz Smith happening way after 87 just feels weird, but then the "summer job" thing from phone guy makes zero sense no matter what :P)

I had been asking in the chat what makes the lore so compelling to solve - and why do more and more people just want to keep trying to solve this story instead of giving up on it. And you really got the ball rolling to answer my question! I know FNAF is popular in part because of its theme so as someone whose attempting trying to write her own video game script (solo) so she can make her own video game, and it was really nice to really hear an outside opinion on what drives us theorists to keep a game alive. This is a wonderfully done video and I feel a reason you've managed to make it work so well is you've adhered to principal Matt has also stuck to during his timeline and that's what you point out has to fit into a cohesive narrative. Many clues communicate and can be interpreted in many different ways and many things frustratingly even if they're nearly a decade old at this point haven't got in a clear-cut statement on what they mean(even if we have largely figured out what they do mean, but I mean seriously I think the last time Scott outright stated something it was phone guy wasn't purple guy and and that wasn't until after simulator!) I've gone off track apologies the main point I get out of this is Scott is building a narrative I feel it does help to look through the timeline in that lens which is why I find that Matts video despite his struggles with the timeline in his latest part works so well with the series because it went along with that principal very well. Many other theories I've seen or videos that critique matts timeline point out evidence that can suggest other things or different placements but leave out a core problem of where does that leave them narratively.

The problem with taking small details to seriusly is that if freddy has buttoms in fnaf 3 minigames, so withered freddy in fnaf 2 sprite not having buttoms is fnaf 1 freddy, and take cake freddy is fnaf 2 freddy with no ears, even fnaf 4 houses are inconscistent in minigames (midinight motorist for example)

If I recall, there was a Matpat theory a long time ago that stated that the FNAF 1 pizzeria was the site of the original MCI and also the FNAF 1 game; that it was shut down after the MCI, sat abandoned for years, and then renovated and turned into the FNAF 1 establishment (this would allow for a timeframe when purple guy would've been able to visit a run-down FNAF 1 before the actual FNAF 1). Even though this might be very outdated, wouldn't this still work in the modern timeline or am I missing something?

the main thing I disagree with is the idea that molten MCI has the OG 5 in it. That just doesnt add up to me. I think the animatronic disassembly scene and William getting spring locked happens *before* even fnaf 2. which is why the animatronics are in the state they are in when you see them in that game. I imagine that all of your animatronics being destroyed and finding a corpse of the owner in the back room *after many children go missing* would make you have to close. Im sure there might be issues with this theory but that's what adds up to me at the moment. 14:34 so here's my thought, Mike's motivation could be at first, his dad is gone somewhere. He maybe heard rumors that he killed some kids but one day he just didnt come home, no explanation. So he finds the sister location bunker as he's looking for his dad and gets scooped.
