Proud Mexican-American, 🇲🇽but ever since I was young I easily made friends among the Filipino-American 🇵🇭community and my partner is Filipina-American. Probably Catholicism and shared culture between Mexico 🇲🇽 and Philippines 🇵🇭 that has a 300+ year history.

A lot of Mexicans and Philippine Asians look very similar I noticed: short stature, straight dark hair, large boulder sized heads and darker skin. I always wondered if they were genetically related.

I was literally taking about this to on of my friends yesterday 💀. I grew up in a community that was basically half black and Latino. Yet I mainly made friends with black kids and like 3 Latino kids. You have to have similar interests to make friends. I spoke Spanish but only at home, not to my friends, I rarely listed to reggaeton or latin pop. I preferred RnB, American pop ect. I also consumed alot of black media. Proud family, boondocks, the madea movies ect. Of course there were Latinos who had similar interests. But I just found other people who who had similar experiences to mine. No matter who your around, you can't help who you make friends with.

I'm a Filipino American, I feel closest to Indian Americans and Japanese people (especially Japanese Filipino people). Growing up the majority of the Asians in my high school were Indian Americans and Filipino Americans, and being the only Asian people in my school, we all hung out together and got a long really well. Even as of today, my Pharmacist is an Indian American, and he knows my mom and me very well. Plus as David said in the video, the Indosphere also made a huge impact, since the Philippines is part of the Indosphere. For example, Tamil and Sanskrit loanwords in the Tagalog language, the Laguna Copperplate Inscription, Kawi script, Baybayin, food like Curry, Atchara, Kare-Kare, etc. Filipinos have a lot of cultural similarities with the Japanese and Japanese Filipinos as well, including taking off the shoes before entering someone's house, the fact that Japanese Kakigori is the predecessor to Filipino Halo Halo, and the same thing goes for Japanese Udon noodles, being the predecessor to Filipino Odong noodles.

@@wiusjskeija4236 Nope, you're wrong. Japanese and filipinos are have things culturally in common. As I said in my comment, Japanese Kakigori is the predecessor to Filipino Halo Halo, and Japanese Udon noodles, are the predecessor to Filipino Odong noodles. Halo Halo and Odong noodles were brought by Japanese immigrants to the Philippines in the early 1900s. Plus, as the Fung Bros said in one of their new videos titeld "Are Filipinos Asian or Pacific Islander" they (the Fung Bros) mentioned that the Filipino language has loanwords from Japanese, as well as Sanskrit, Malay, Hokkien, English, and Spanish. This makes the Filipino language the only language in the world to have loanwords from the Japanese language, in addition to Sanskrit, Malay, Hokkien, English, and Spanish.

I love their culture, food, spirituality, language and they are fun to hangout with. They love learning about my culture as well. We show each other music and vibe out. I like Filipinos a lot too because they are hard workers, good vibes, and they can get down with me on the dancefloor and kareoke. I love pansed and lumpia ❤. I am African American and Chinese male from California. My mother had tiger mom tendencies. I went to a Chinese pre-school, and later attended private schools for my k-12 education where the largest non-white population was Asian American (Chinese, Korean and Indian). In that regard I was very much ingrained into largely Chinese and Korean American culture. However, during large stretches of the summers, and two weekends a month I spent with the African American side of my family and grew up as a part of a lot of African American social organizations and attended a mostly African American church. Also, I have been to China multiple times to visit family there and connected to different aspects of mainland Chinese culture (at least where I was at). Plus, before I was old enough to stay home alone as a kid I spent a lot of time in both Chinatowns ib my area with my Chinese grandmother. When I was in college, my university was 29.9% Asian and 2.53% Black or African American. In college, I belonged to an historically Asian professional frat and attended several Asian American evangelical churches (which continued after I graduated). Asian and Asian Americans also dominated my major. Yet, I still managed to connect with Black people (largely Black people from Immigrant families). The new thing that college brought was that among my Asian friends, I was splitting my time between the international students from China and Korea and those that were born and raised in America from the same background. Because they rarely interacted with one another. Interestingly enough my three closet friends to this day are an Chinese American, Black American from an immigrant family, and a Latino guy. I would say that my life experience has put me as 55% sharing experiences with Chinese and Koreans and 45% with Black people.

The only groups I don't relate to are folks raised in PW spaces (whether white or POC). People that never traveled AND aren't open to other ways of thinking or doing things. People who are close-minded to multi-cultural experiences. Can't vibe with those types, but to each their own. I went to a HS that was full of second-generation immigrant kids, so I connected with everyone. People are people. Where connection is valued, connections will happen.

I heard this from several of my HK friends. I think it has some merit. Taiwanese and Korean are more similar because they tell you exactly how they feel, and don’t sugar coat anything. They are usually polite if you reciprocate though. HK and Japanese hide their true feelings. They could be nice to your face, but perhaps have a different perspective behind closed doors. They keep “face” by never disrespecting you in your presence. So the bottom line is would you prefer for someone to tell you in your face that you suck, or for someone to lie that they actually like you, yet actually hate your guts? 😂

This is definitely a fascinating discussion. That said, I do have to agree with the assertion that if you live among certain people, speak the language, etc... they'll eventually bring you into the fold. That is true... for the most part. There are cultures, like Japan, that are famously nigh impossible for that to happen due to how their society and culture function. It's incredibly common to hear expats who've lived there for 30-40 years, have children, have citizenship, and they're still never accepted. Contrast that with what i've seen and heard from folks living in a wide variety of different countries: White guy of Polish descent living in Cambodia for years and he's basically considered one of them while hitting the same miletstones as the friend in Japan. Japanese guy that got disowned by his family now lives in Dominican Republic and he too is treated as part of the people, has a family and everything. That subconscious feeling of acceptance you guys touched on is what long-term foreigners in places like Japan pretty much don't get. Another way that culture is fascinating.

As a British-Filipino growing up & going to school here in London, as many of you know our city is very global & multicultural, so I grew up having friends of many ethnicities & got to know their cultures e.g. South Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, African etc. But its no big thing I like to rave about - its just something we all grew up with naturally. However - the only ethnicity I wasn't exposed to much was East Asian - especially Filipinos, as there just wasn't much where I grew up here in West London. So in a way, even though I grew up with Filipino culture, unfortunately, I never had the privilege of mingling with other Filipinos growing up - whereas my cousins did as well as other Filipino communities in London that flourished together. Unfortunately, at 35, I think its too late for me to meet other Filipinos my age who are readily available, & I think the ship has certainly sailed on me potentially meeting a Filipino girlfriend for that matter.

I’m Korean and was adopted by an Irish American family. They were in Japan and my mom wanted a 4th child. I was around 3, according to the dentist. 1. I don’t think it’s as bad now, but my mom said she had to tell their Japanese housekeepers that I was Japanese because she was worried that the the generation in the early 70’s supposedly the 2 countries still didn’t like each other. 2. I use to be the only Asian in my classes. My dad was in the marine corps so we moved a lot. We were a little isolated depending where we were but we mostly lived in military housing 3. My parents were very good about teaching us how NOT to be prejudice 4. I sometime don’t think I’m Asian. 5. My husband who is German/American😊says he never thinks about it. Though one time we were in the Navy base in San Diego and he had to get some badges sewed on by the dry cleaners. They were Filipino, with a really thick accent. My husband looked at me and I said I have no idea what they said! The only time I ever thought about what it is like to be Asian was during the pandemic. A big reason why a lot of latin countries arent one unified nation is because when Napolean conquered Spain, all the spanish colonies didn't want to obey a french king as their leader and many openly rebelled and declared their independence cause they'd rather run their own countries than be ruled by a foreign king. But there was a lot of chaos with who would lead and a lot of people took power in their own hands which divided various regions by infighting for full control (Simon Bolivar) unfortunately the corrupt elite wanted to feel like big fish in their small ponds rather than aim for full unification. That's not to say each of modern Latin America has their own unique culture they all have differing ties to their lands, the Taino of the Caribbean, the Aztecs & Maya of Mexico, the Inca of Peru, and many many more tribes, peoples and cultures of their regions.

Some ppl are into other cultures, languages, cuisines. Some ppl only like their own. To try to box someone into their own culture is just as unfair as labeling someone a racist for not exploring other cultures. Some ppl love sushi, some ppl r grossed out by raw fish. To expect those who are grossed out to suddenly love it is unreasonable. Just like some ppl are wired to be adept at speaking other languages while others struggle with it. Some ppl are just more comfortable around their own ppl. Every race/culture has those. Asian af, brown af, black af, white af, Muslim af, Jewish af, etc. But progress is driven by those who explore, while traditions are maintained by the conservative.

I think most of it has to do with your upbringing and your immediate surroundings. You can be Asian and have two totally different experiences depending on where you grow up. If all of your friends, peers, teachers, etc. are white and you grow up in a rural suburb, you will most likely relate to white people despite not being white yourself. If you grow up in Asia in a super racially homogenous area, perhaps your perception of non-Asians will be different than if you grew up in a more racially diverse neighborhood.

I live such a diverse life that I don't have any group that I can truly relate to lol. I like video games and anime (classic ones) so my friends consists of all race/ethnicity. We hang out, attend events together, hike/camp, at one point work at the same company, house parties. I'm just missing a group that's into sports since my relatives don't count.

I'm black and Asian. I relate more to being black just because blacks have been more welcoming and accepting of my diverse ethnicity. In a way, Asians normally are not. Often times my ethnicity is seen as a positive attribute among my black friends or a non-issue. However, I also relate to immigrants as a group. that in itself sometimes feels like its own ethnic group.

I grew up in the SGV before it was Asian. I can definitely relate to other ethnicities a little better (I'm Filipino, take that as you will). Only when i got to college, i got into being Filipino. I became an officer in the Filipino club, even played the lead in a couple of PCNs lmao... Felt like i just fit in there tbh. My kids are growing up in it now and their ethnicity is less an issue for them. They don't even think about it.

*_I’m a White Guy. Mainly Scotch/Irish, but am a Heinz 57 mutt. I’ve been a Martial Arts enthusiast and nerd literally my whole life. I very much relate to Asians and their many varied cultures and styles. I only have just a handful of friends and acquaintances that are Caucasian. And equally just a handful who are Black. Everyone else I associate with in my life are Asian. I’ve never thought it was odd or weird at all! It wasn’t until someone tried to “shame” me for it, like I’m somehow doing something wrong, that I even took any self•notice of it._* *_I decided after thinking about it for a couple of days, not to hang out or associate less with my Asian friends and acquaintances, but instead to disassociate Completely from the person trying to make it seem like I’m doing something wrong by having Asian friends and acquaintances (especially Asian females)._* *_Interestingly, the person that was attempting to throw so much shade and shame at me was a forty three year old, overweight, liberal, white female named: “Karen”. That’s really her name. Karen. • • • • • [Let that sink in for a moment]_* 🤨😒🙄

I’m Chinese American and personally I think there’s nothing wrong with non-Asian people being interested in Asian culture or having a lot of Asian friends. I have a mostly Asian friend group except for 2 White friends and they really enjoy Asian food, the culture, shows/media. I always saw it as completely normal. As long as people are being respectful, there should be no gate keeping of what people “should” or “shouldn’t” like. I feel happy that I can introduce them to aspects of my culture that I’m so proud of 😊 keep being you and don’t let others define you 👍🏼

I don't really care about any of that (if you're a cool person, and we get along as two humans than that is good enough for me). It's been on an individual bases for me too. I have a friend that I went to college with in the U.S. who is now back home in Singapore and a buddy who lives here in NYC who is Peruvian who was adopted, by a white woman when he was young (we get along well). I have had people that I have known from all different racial groups (not that there are that many racial groups outside of three to four). The fourth is questionable. I have known people from all different ethnicity and nationalities too. My parents were never, like some minority group parents are and wanted me to hang out with only whites and be the token dot in one of their photos, etc. My family were already doing okay for themselves, especially my mother since she has always been business minded, etc.

Personally, as an African American woman, I feel that it may not be the race, but the values and beliefs that make one not relate to their own race. IMO, I feel that blacks come together through struggle and hurt feelings or heartache. I am all for healing yourself and not seeing yourself as a freaking slave, hanging out at slave castles to prove a point. What point? I don't know, but I can't relate. I like African people more than black Americans possibly due to a more optimistic outlook on life? I'm not sure, but they look like me and relate to me.

Am a hapa (half Asian and half white) but relate mostly to Native Americans/Native Alaskans (looks-wise). Feel most at home around Asians overall (east Asians and Southeast Asians). Tried to connect with Central Asians and could not relate to eating horse meat or Muslim religion. Don't really connect with white folk either...my neighbor yesterday told me.."Asian people from your part of the world eat dog don't they?" Unbelievable. Have heard that one before but never had it said to my face directly until now lol.

I mean if you’re half Chinese the dog meat question isn’t out of the picture because that is literally a thing in some parts of China, even today. Like with horse meat in Central Asia. Not everyone is born with mental calipers and can deduce your haplogroup admixture to be only half East/SE Asian and thus unlikely to be from geographical East/SE Asia. If anything you acting like some culturally aware guy and devolving Central Asian culture to “horse meat and Islam” is even more insulting given you pretend to know better. Islam isn’t even big in Mongolia, nor is horse meat in Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, or Afghanistan. In fact its banned in Turkmenistan.
