Also let the doctors/anesthesiologists know if you smoke cannabis, it’s been known to cause a sort of tolerance to some anesthetic drugs. You don’t want to be unable to move but fully able to feel while being operated on, so be honest about your drug use when it comes to surgery.

I do not believe that at all! Not only am I a daily smoker but I smoke at least an ounce a week. I've been put under anesthesia a few times and although I've been very afraid but I will still be awake when they do the surgery the last time was so bad they knocked me out before they ever took me to the surgery room. The surgery before I remember going into the room moving onto the bed and freaking out letting them know I wasn't asleep they all laughed and it said of course you're not you're still talking to us that was the last thing I remember.

That happened to my mom too in like the mid or late 90s. She was cleaning a vase in the sink and it shattered with her hand inside. It cut her wrist so bad it went through tendons and was just awful. Anyway when she went to the hospital she told them she was allergic to penicillin and then “mistakenly” gave it to her anyway. Not only did she have a massive wound on her wrist but she had an allergic reaction also. When she finally made it home she couldn’t move her neck for like a week, it was terrible.

@@annabenedetti9699 anybody who downplays that should have their registration removed and be investigated for intentional harm. There's no way in hell it's negligence. This is why we ask for allergies. It's so we don't kill someone. We wouldn't ask about allergies if we weren't going to take them seriously. In Australia, you get a white hospital bracelet. If you have any food or medication allergies, you get a red bracelet and it's the first thing you see on their patient profile whether it's paper or digital (I've worked in public and private hospitals that have one or the other). You can't miss an allergy here. I also use the emergency profile function on my phone so if I'm unconscious, paramedics can see my allergies, medications and chronic health conditions as well as my emergency contact When I needed antibiotics as a precaution as the surgery I had was on my veins, I told them I'm allergic to cephaclor so they avoided that entire antibiotic family and I told them I might be allergic to penicillin, we don't know if it was my infection at the time or penicillin that caused the rash and I think I've taken it once since then. They avoided it just in case.

I didn’t realize that I was allergic to Toradol until a nurse pointed out that I vomit and spiked fevers exactly 8 minutes after taking it after my first postpartum. My face also swelled up 15 mins later and itched even after the anesthesia itch disappeared. It was weird and we stopped it. I felt better. Second time they changed my meds. Even if you think it might be something stupid. They need to know. It might save your life. Anesthesia is not a joke. I have asthma and, I am also allergic to soy products. Some anesthesia contains soy. I didn’t know this until I was having hand surgery. I listed my known allergies and, the anesthesiologist was questioning me in my allergies and, meds at the time. He thanked me for letting him know about the soy and, that’s when I found out that it’s in some anesthesia. He said that’s important for me to list this anytime I have any procedures done that I will need anesthesia. BTW people. Don’t wear perfume or cologne to a surgery center. Lol. I have sort of the opposite problem. I have to tell everyone that I'm allergic to gas anasthesia when we all know I might not be. Malignant Hyperthermia runs in the family and I haven't had the test approved yet so my surgeon marked it in huge red letters all over my file, gave me two red wristbands for it and actually advised that we write it on my face mask and to tell literally every single hospital worker I see the day of surgery. I didn’t knew I was allergic to anesthesia, so when I had my first operation it took everyone by surprise, fortunately it wasn’t sever enough to put my life in risk but still it was really bad I was throwing up every hour even without eating anything (water for the most part) I had a rash, I was really dizzy as well as tired since I couldn’t sleep for more than two hours without throwing up and it even caused me THREE PANIC ATTACKS! And it lasted for THREE DAYS in which I could barely eat or have my meds, so unless you want to experience all that or maybe even worse, talk with your doctor to check a few days before your operation if you may be allergic to anesthesia it could save you a lot of pain (or even your life).

I doubt anything was amiss. Back surgery is serious stuff and far more complicated and extensive than other surgeries. My mom had spinal stenosis at age 80. She was seeing a new doctor who was pushing to do corrective surgery. My mom was a lifelong smoker, but was never honest with any of her doctors about how much she smoked. She was excited about getting her back corrected, but didn’t really understand how extensive the surgery was or how difficult recovery would be. I researched the topic thoroughly, but knew she wouldn’t listen to me regarding the dangers. So, I asked if I could go with her to her next (2nd to last) appointment before surgery. She agreed. As expected, the doctor kept talking about the amazing successes he had had with patients undergoing the surgery. Finally, I asked the age of the patients who he said fared so well. They were all in their 20s. 🙄 I then asked how many successful surgeries he’d had with patients in their 80s. He hadn’t done ANY! Then I asked how well patients that were smokers healed. He said he would do the surgery on a smoker because the back would never completely heal. He had never even screened her to see if she smoked!! Had I not stepped in and asked a few simple yet vital questions, she would have had the surgery and suffered fir the rest of her life! It’s very important to tell your doctors everything.

I have major issues with codine. Makes me really sick. The first time I went under the knife was for a broken wrist that needed pinning. The doctor and anesthesiologist laughed it off when i listed codine as an allergy. When i was comming out of the anaesthetic, I was vomiting so much and so violently that they couldnt get it to stop. They were hesitant to let me leave the hospital after the procedure because of how long it took me to properly wake up. I was still feeling the effects 3 days later. They used some kind of opioid varient during the surgery that was apparently close to codine. The second time I went under the knife was for a gallbladder removal. I told the anesthesiologist about that incident and he made preperations to combat excessive vomiting and was prepared for any other things that might have come up. He was awesome and actually listened and took what i told him seriously. It was a hell of a difference. Its so important to tell your anesthesiologist about that kind of stuff. Even for a seemingly simple procedure, it can make all the difference.

I can’t have versed. The first time I reacted to it I fainted as soon as it hit my system and I remember the anesthesiologist being mad at the staff for them telling him it was his fault I fainted. Then a year later I was having a cluster of pseudo seizures where I was transported by ambulance to the emergency room and the fire department gave me versed twice while waiting for the ambulance. It didn’t help the seizures but instead caused multiple fainting spells. After that I started listing it as an allergy with the reaction being syncope.

It’s AMAZING how many people would rather remain “politely quiet” about important medical issues rather than speak up. This is why a close friend or family member should attend the appointment with the patient. Select someone who is very “questioning” and outspoken.

My mother reacts poorly to the Caine medications. Novacaine for dental work caused so many problems that for years she just toughed the root canal out. When she went to have an outpatient procedure to her tongue with local anesthetic, they didn't believe her. She was supposed to be there for an hour after her surgery. They kept her til late evening because she was so out of it.

My last surgery (out of 6 I've had so far) had the best team, the anesthesiologist knew I had Ehlers-Danlos (this makes the anesthesia to not have the same effect as others) plus I'm deadly allergic to NSAIDs and I also have difficult veins. So he personally came over the night before my surgery, after I got admitted and he personally set my IV before going home (I was supposed to be admitted at noon on a Thursday and I ended up admitted until 7:30pm) and the next day he calmy explain the whole process to me and that I will probably sleep longer than expected (since I have 2 times wake up one in the middle of surgery and another time whole they were closing me up, the last one was the worst since I felt every single stich and none realize I was awake until the surgeon told anesthesiologist to wake me up and the Dr saw me crying, I was just 9 at the time)... and yeah, I woke up on recovery like 4hrs after my surgery ended, best rest of my life 😂😂😂😂

Allergic to or response to? I have never used any pharmaceutical, always healthy and I'm a grandmother retired. I was out within seconds of the needle in my arm, and they told me my blood pressure rose during hip surgery. I'd had minor surgeries in the past (5) and nothing. I'm wondering if the drugs were so strong because I had never taken pharmaceuticals over my life. Barely even pain killers.

I am a pharmacy technician of over 20 years. People constantly fail to inform doctors of what drugs they are taking. Some have multiple doctors and fail to inform them of what another doctor is prescribing, so they end up with multiple medications for the same condition and the pharmacy ends up trying to figure out WTF is doing on. They go to the ER for pain. They are already on daily does of hydrocodone and then bring in additional pain med RXs. They get mad because we refuse to fill them. The hydrocodone is for my back, the new one is for my leg. They act like pharmacy people are dumb. People are so stupid.
