I remember how i missed one game. "Nothing serious happened" my party members told me. So at one moment a sweet, innocent looking ten year girl walks in our mansion. And all my party members start to RUN. Like jumping out of windows, running in different rooms and barricading doors, shouting something along the line of "Don't get closer, i have a sword and I'm not afraid to use it, oh god, help me", one even started climbing through a chimney. And there i was, alone in the middle of the room, no idea what was happening. That girl said hello, gave me some letters and walk out. And no matter how hard i asked nobody told me who she was. To this day i have no clue what happened

Plottwist. In the last week, the paladin just got affected with a sleep spell, which let him dream a nightmare. The nightmare is this, what we see now.
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle Жыл бұрын
Clearly, the sleep spell actually attracted a Nightmare (yes, the evil fiery horse thing), and it's now showing him this right before it eats his face, so that he doesn't suspect it's _going_ to eat his face.
@alarkhar
@alarkhar Жыл бұрын
@@Mokiefraggle Eh, nightmares aren't that bad if you know how to deal with them. Once in a one shot my team was tossed into hell, and stranded in a swamp made of tar. We were sinking, and the ruler of the layer showed up - a huge demon lord riding a nightmare. It was pretty clear that, unless we did something, we were toast - so I did. My character, a tiny tibbit (a cat shapeshifter, who can switch between cat, catgirl and halfling forms) grabbed the nightmare's snout and kissed her. Not a tiny peck on the cheek, no - a full makeout session, tongues and all. The DM told us that we had the time to sink to the following layer, since the demon lord was incapacitated by laughter and the nightmare was just "Dafuq just happened?" So, as you can see, nightmares are manageable, as long as you do something they don't expect.
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle Жыл бұрын
@@alarkhar I mean, I absolutely love Nightmares as a concept in D&D. Used to have a PC from an evil campaign, part of a dark order of lycanthropes and vampires, who at higher levels had a Nightmare for a mount and a pack of Shadow Mastiffs as his pets (he was a Ranger, a werewolf, and a generally murderous, sometimes cannibalistic madman...I miss playing him. But he was an NPC villain lieutenant later in our non-evil campaign, which was also cool). Nightmares are just epic-looking in that "straight off a metal album cover" kind of way that totally vibes for me. That said, I also find them annoying as heck when used in certain ways. Currently, one of our games has a level 5 party who were just beset by a Nightmare that kept us trapped in a bunch of layered dreams, Inception-style, in order to keep us from getting back to our commanding officer with a bunch of vital intel, and also as a way to make sure we'd never actually know what was going on, and actually find and kill it. Took a _lot_ more doing than I would've liked to get out of all that. Pretty sure our DM was taking the "nightmare" thing just a little too literally there...and the gag ran on for way too long to not get stale.

_I missed a ton of sessions my first time playing, because I had joined a club late into the school year. They'd been trying to kill a cult leader for half a year, and he kept getting away. My first session, they were getting ready for another battle with him, and since I was new, we came up with the story that my character was just really quiet and didn't talk, so no one realized I was there. When it was my turn, I didn't know what to really do so I said "can I cut his head off with my axe??" and the DM said "ha, sure if you can roll a nat 20", and on my first ever dice roll in DnD I got a nat 20, walked up silently and chopped off the cult leaders head in a second that all of the other team members couldn't do for 6 months. It was great. I love DnD_

Don't worry, he will. Who knows how long this relationship lasts? Evandra once got married to a dragon and now they are divorced. The work of an adventurer can ruin marriages, especially if we are talking about a charisma based one like Antrius. Btw it would be funny to see the paladin be in a relationship with our favourite cleric Vlytherin... or Zephyr. The second option would make Antrius more angry than anything I could think of!

I'm someone who very, very rarely misses a session, I only miss a session if something really serious happen, like when I had surgery done. The first time I ever missed a D&D 5e session - literally around 8 months ago - was to go to a date with my gf, it was the first time we were meeting irl. In the middle of the date, my phone starts going off with discord notifications. It's my DM and the other players pinging me and screaming in all caps "TOTAL PARTY KILL!" next session I find out that my character was the only one to survive, not only because the DM didn't want to kill a character from someone who wasn't there, but also because she was being absurdly lucky and no one was able to hit her and she was passing all the saves. Which was very ironic, my character was a depressive battlemaster fighter who wanted to die in battle to join her wife in the afterlife. She got her wish a few sessions later after infiltrating a kobold cult and taking on over 20 kobolds and one lvl 10 caster mage by herself (she was lvl 6), she still exterminated almost all the kobolds before the mage got her.

I understand the pain. I once had a halfling warlord that dropped to 0 hp in EVERY encounter. At the end of the campaign, he was a bit of a death-seeker (long story). Before the final session of the campaign, I privately went up to the DM and told him that I wanted my character to finally fall permanently in battle to finish off his arc. So, as we enter the BBEG's lair, I rush forward to attack the BBEG and find my death... only to have the BBEG miss every attack or my character to pass every save. We did open rolls, so there was no fudging; the Dice Gods legitimately did not want my character to die. So, my character did not die in the campaign but did live on as a legend in my group...

@@probablythedm1669 oh it was fine, every battle she won she'd complain "that was too easy" even if she was at very low HP, cuz a battle was only worth fighting for her if she died in the end. One of my players missed pretty much an entire zone, and came back halfway through the dungeon. What he missed was the death of that nation’s king, the recruitment of FIVE NPCs to the party, a large scale betrayal, a massive fire, and a fight against three of the bosses, which in the last one, one of the players was literally transported to another PLANET as part of the boss attack, AND one of the NPC party members did 80 damage, over half the boss’ health, in a single turn. He reappeared falling out of a box in the third boss room while the party was still looting, and never was told out of character what happened. All he knows is what his character learned

One of our group has an annoyingly disruptive work schedule to his participation, so this is what happens but to the extreme, he missed like 3 or 4 sessions before he could join us and in that time: we traversed a jungle, fought a titanoboa, the sorcerer almost got stolen away by a sauropod, I tried stealing a solid gold idol that was clearly a religious offering, then we all (minus the sneaky rogue) got captured by a city of Aztec halflings that rode raptors, then we fought a giant gorilla in a death by combat scenario, killed the gorilla Harambe style and escaped into the city to run towards the temple that had the artifact we needed, sorcerer killed 100 people with a single lightning bolt spell. and we reached the safety of the temple because the tribe's people refused to chase us past the boundary.... That's the span of like 3 sessions.

Kinda want to see a session with this party: Evandra the Bard of the College of Tea Making, Greg, a Reborn Sorcerer and Unnamed Paladin 2 (the bard retires from the party, and possibly brings in a new character)

We had one of our guys miss a week. Ended up giving a goblin Stockholm syndrome and making it join the party. The same party member missed the next week, so we went into the goblins home (a ruined castle) proseeded to kill several goblins, and our barbarian killed the chiefton in single combat, effectively making us the new warlords of a band of 10 goblins, a tiny kobold whom we've been training into a second barbarian and a Grick. I can't wait to see them all help us in some final arc where we need an army for some reason lol

This is literally a 1:1 analog of growing up. You stop paying attention to your friends and all of a sudden people are moving on to better jobs than you, getting married and having kids, and getting their corpses posessed by the unholy machinations of the darkest abyss. Art imitating life lol

I feel this in my soul. One session was a really tough fight, 2 out of 6 of the PCs died fighting a horde of ghouls, so the players created new ones and they were introduced the next week. Except I was away that week. Over the course of the session I was absent, they somehow finished clearing out the farmhouse and barn, went back to town, met the new characters, heard about a jungle drake, went off and killed it, chopped its head off, preserved it, and arrived at a city that takes 3 in-game days to travel to. In one session. 4 hours tops. Our most productive session when I was there was probably an hour of rp, two hours of combat, half an hour of looking up rules, and a 15 minute break.

LOL two of our poor players missed a session for DND and in that time frame we went from being on a pirate ship heading towards a whirl pool to- 1 person befriending and riding a dragon after having a mental breakdown and declaring to kill anyone who gets in the way of him finding his friends. 1 person being chased down by a King Kong sized gorilla who’s house is made of human skulls, and 2 are being dangled over a pit of basilisks as a ritualistic sacrifice being performed by lizard people who murdered everyone on the island and took over.

One of my favorite excuses for a player not being at a session was that, in the previous session, everybody kept stealing one character's kills in the fights, so next time, that character just pouted the whole time and thus didn't contribute to the session

Yah. In the last session one of our campaign members wasn't in so we did a side quest and during the side quest him and another member got mind controlled by a giant rat. So our plan was to grab our companions and get out. My brother grabbed the other guy and got out just fine. But this man. HE KEPT ESCAPING MY GRAPPLE! This went on for several turns until eventually the giant rat was dead. I told them that at the beginning of the next session, I was slap the shit out of him, and his reaction is going to be priceless! 😂
