When You Should & Should NOT Use A Courtesy Turn

Do you do a courtesy turn before your down-and-back in the show ring? If so, we ask you… why? There are a few reasons you could use a courtesy turn, but we want to make sure that you DO have a reason for a courtesy turn… for example, your dog paces or they were distracted by something in the ring and need time to re-adjust. But, more likely, the reasons you shouldn’t do a courtesy turn apply to you and your dog. I love the turn. My girl GSMD- paces- and the turn can help (not all the time)- but its better than just going out from the exam.

Great advice. What about coming off the ramp and then going slightly behind the judge's right side while the judge is looking forward and doing a small turn and then gait straight into the judge's line of vision?

I have used the courtesy turn for my handicap when needed

I think I will keep the turn for down and back. I do that turn for a specific purpose. I use it to get my dog in a straight line. Judges usually walk in towards the ring after exam and turn to their left a bit. We go towards the ring corner, I turn him while I take a couple steps backward facing him to make sure he’s straight, and turn forward and go to the far corner all in one straight motion. It’s not a courtesy turn, it’s a tactical turn. Otherwise I might have half of the down and back with his rear legs completely out of alignment with the front, and not even realize it. It’s the same turn that we do at the other end. Flat Coats are long, so any sort of misalignment is really noticeable. A lot of our rings are little dinky things where you need to use every inch to your advantage. If you just go straight from exam, you are losing 4’ that you could use to get your dog in a straight line.
