The Maesters are all considered 'good', but then you have this one guy who the MC/narrator tells you not to like, except that the story presents him as a good guy, until the twist. And his 'twist' is presented as such. I do agree that the Maesters as a whole are a sign of issues with Spira culture, but that works whether or not Seymour as a villain is a twist or not. tbh imo Seymour is the weakest part of FFX's plot, as much as I like him. Combining his kind of confusing state as 'twist villain' with the fact that his plotline actually has very little to do with the main plot ('Sin bad, kill Sin' - removing him leaves pretty much all the story beats that aren't directly related to him in tact)... Great battle theme, though, for his last fight.
