"Hey man! The boss told me you're sick. And he was worried about you and how you're feeling." Hopefully that subtly communicates the boss is listening in while maintaining deniability. "Yeah by the way he keept going on and on about your bowel movements I dunno what's going on there. Kinda weird if you ask me." Tell the boss that was me trying to get him to open up. If it fails it fails.

Legally, there's no distinction between listening in to a conversation and tapping it, as far as consent goes, as far as I'm aware. So being fired for refusing to be a party to that is retaliation, which is also illegal. (and yes, I know it's a comedy skit, but still). Note: If it's a one-party consent state, the boss might get away with it by saying the employee gave consent for him to listen to the conversation, but given the coercive nature of the consent, still legally dubious.
