After a dozen dogs that hated the vet clinic and had to be carried or dragged inside, I came up with a plan for the latest one. The first time we went to the vet, I left a huge bag of treats with the receptionist. Then every Friday I took my dog to the clinic - the receptionist greeted her with happiness and a handful of treats. I did this for 6 months. In the 8 years since, when my dog has to go to the vet, she gets super excited when she sees the building, and she drags me inside. Mission accomplished 😊

Every vet I've been to already does that, it's standard practice (or should be). First visit they ask the owner if treats are OK, make a note on the file and then it's all plain sailing. I'd be cautious if the vets didn't already do that, it really is common sense that 99.99% of dogs at least are food motivated, if not treats, then toys.

My boy loves to go and visit everyone at the vets. The only time he was a little hesitant was during the pandemic when he had to go in alone. He did not like going in without me, but once he couldn't see me he was ok.

When i was a vet nurse we had many dogs who hated coming to see us but we also had a couple that loved it, one of the vets i worked at was opposite the local field that many people walked theor dogs on and one of them used to drag her owner into say hi to us every day, even if she was over the other side of the road the dog would pull and pull until the owner crossed the road and let her come say hi 🥰

I taught my dog from the puppy that a visit to a vet is a nice adventure and he's happy to go whenever we pass the clinic, even when we don't have the visit. And also, any and all medicines are coded as "treats" so he swallows them without any problem.

When I was young, my brother had a beagle that would howl like that at night until we let him in the house. Then he would run upstairs, get in my brother‘s bed, grab the blanket with his teeth and pull it up to his neck as he rested his head on the pillow. He was totally rotten! Lol

At five o’clock in the morning the brother’s dog brought him to the vet… Too much early for my brother. My brother thought his dog was sick and later , my brother, father and the dog went to the vet… At the end, the vet said to my father « the dog is ok , your son ‘s get troubles, and his dog is worried » … And it was the truth.

My furbutts love the vets. There are lots of smells, treats, and a resident cat to bark at. They know the route we take to get there and start getting excited when we get about halfway there.

Every dog I've had (fair few in my 64 laps of the sun) have loved going to the vet. The receptionists, nurses/assistants and vets themselves knew what they were doing and obviously loved animals. First visit they ask if treats are OK, make a note on the file and wallah! no problems. All except one Vet that I really don't know why they were still a vet, they obviously didn't like it. But I just changed vets, talked to others who did the same. But too be fair it's a stressful job with long hours due to understaffing, here in Australia it has one of the highest su1cide rates of any profession.

When I was little my family had a golden retriever who would somehow break his leash and run to the vet. They would always call my dad and say he was ready for pick up after he got his check up and bath. I got a golden retriever because of him.

I had a dog when I was young, he hated the vet, and you had to have two people to get him out of the car ... but one night my mom called me and said the dog would not eat or even drink anything and he kept scratching at his mouth she imagined all kinds of things when I got into the car I looked at him and found that he had a piece of bone between his back teeth when we got there thinking we were going to have a hard time, he got out of the car and ran to the door

At 5:38, not so sure if the strategy with "Sonny" is good. It's kind of letting him think that "NO" means "YES!" It might work for taking meds, but the next time he tries to ingest something really bad (i.e. chocolate) and you tell him "NO," guess what he's going to do?

I feel sorry for all these anxious pets that are so fearful of their vet appointments. There are good anti-anxiety medications that can be given before their appointment that greatly reduces their anxiety & stress. This has become more common-place as more vets are trained in fear-free techniques. If your dog or cat is anxious as a pup or kitten, it gradually worsens as they age so it’s a good idea to try these prescription medicines as soon as they are identified. It can make a huge difference in how they feel about going to see their docs. From a vet with 30 yrs experience in small animal practice.
