Friends, on this Third Sunday of Lent, the Church asks us to look at one of the great texts in the Old Testament-namely, the Ten Commandments from the book of Exodus. Lent is a time of getting back to basics spiritually, and walking through the Ten Commandments is a great way to do it. Go back to this text in Exodus, commit the Commandments to memory if you haven’t, and use them to examine your conscience.

How is it possibly ethical to suggest the equivalent of a notion we all travel with one foot in a stranger's fantasyland, using fictional vocabulary: prophecy, prayer, etc.? We have Moses: World's worst navigator, leading a party as if travel were best done with one foot in fantasyland.

God gives us strength to overcome our struggles. It is a struggle to provide for my children, as a single mother my sons are special needs, and require much from me but I know God will give me the strength and courage that I need. So while I struggle to buy groceries and while I struggle to pay rent. I will keep faith and praise God ALWAYS!

Observing the Sabbath is SUCH a blessing. Set things up through the week and on Saturday so that quiet and relaxation are possible when the sun sets on Saturday. Enjoy protected time until the sun sets on Sunday. That leaves plenty of time to ponder what has to happen on Monday.

Dear@@esthert9146, saving lives is doing God's will. Do you have a spiritual director, or can you talk with your pastor? I don't think the Lord wants you to not be at peace, when you have chosen such a noble area to work in!!(I was a nursing assistant, and being there to bring a bedpan, or lunch, or to move the pillows is a form of saving a life, one act at a time.)

Thank you, bishop. Reconciling with family is difficult, but I saw that with God it is possible, He heals us and shows us the healthiest boundaries for our specific situation. Many of us have reasons to hate our parents. When I converted I understood I had to try to forgive them and all I could do was cry and grieve. But I brought to confession all my rage and negative feel and wounds, and that was enough. True healing happens at confession through the priest and the simple act of kneeling in front of the Heavenly Father. I was finally able to look at my parents as people, not parts of me, my negative inner voices and my past, but just people, with their own story and wounds, who nevertheless tried their best with me, even though it wasn't enough to save me as a kid, I still recognized their efforts. I was able make the relationship healthier because God's grace had dealt with my own unbearable pain. And God did that for me many more times in my life. He's faithful. He can do anything and He can help us not break under the evil around us.

It seems to me, especially after carefully listening to this eye-opening sermon, that that's the direction the 10 Commandments are meant to lead us or guide us to. I thank God for so much clarity. Clarity and harmony in our relationship to our loving, living Lord Jesus and in our relationships with others, allowing His love to flow out into the world, as you said. Thank you. Hi Bishop Barron, thank you for the great explanation and reminder, about the 10 commandments. I have written along and will definitely try to go through this every night. I did have one question for you, if I read Exodus correctly it says, 20:5 ... I am a jealous God to those who hate Me ... 20:6 But to those who love Me and keep My commandments .... Then the conclusion is that what people make is very different? Here I think it is clearly about those who hate Him or those who love Him. 20:6 I find even more interesting if you (I think) read the word “and” carefully. Love Him “and” keep His commandments, WoW 🤩 I am very happy with all your lessons, in a very short time I have already learned a lot from you. Super Super thanks 🙏 Of course I will pass on everything I hear from you 🎉🎉🤩👍🙏 God bless you and your many works 🔥👍🙏🙏🙏

I have seen many evangelical pastors violating the command mentioned in 3:30. Taking God's name in vain could also mean talking about God irresponsibly, or to take advantage of people using God's name, or even worse, making people believe something I say or want is the will of God, when in reality is not.

Back in elementary days, I used to memorize the Decalogue or the Ten Commandments. It was complied out of academics, as I'll have a guaranteed 10 points in Religion exams. Knowing and practicing are obviously two different things. Do we follow out of fear, or do we follow because we love God. Or I don't follow because it seems I can get away without repercussions? Society's a mess, or even more than I am aware of, when individuals tend to ignore or dismiss these Commandments. This is NOT JUST "ten:. This is the MOST IMPORTANT "TEN" in our life. Let's level up by following Jesus.

Your mention of the failure to keep holy the Sabbath wreaking havoc brought to mind an image I had some time ago. The culture, and even some calendar apps treat Monday as the beginning of the week, and Sunday simply as the last day of the weekend. But would anyone ever think of arranging a bookshelf with both bookends on the same side? Only by returning Sunday to its proper place can a person begin to restore order in his or her week and by extension his or he life.

Your Excellency. One major issue that hampers us, in the West, is beauty that is confounded with Lust. It takes Christians an enormous amount of self control that is based on "Filling ourselves with Our Lord Jesus Christ's, the Word of God's" spirit and Love. It's only by filling ourselves with Our Lord Jesus Christ's Love that we forget and see differently those who present themselves in a lustful way. It's hard but doable.

I've heard, I think from Dennis Prager, that another interpretation of “taking the Lord's name in vain” from the original Hebrew sense is “Thou shalt not CARRY the Lord's name in vain.” In addition, someone's 'name' can also be interpreted as 'reputation' (as when you speak of someone's 'good name'). This seems, to me, to admonish against doing ungodly things in general since we are supposed to be representing God throughout the world, but ESPECIALLY when we're acting in 'official' church capacities. IMHO, outsiders will often see the work of God in and through us, and while we ourselves are sinners, and should openly confess our failings, we must also understand, and make it understood, that these are OUR failings, not God's. If we're explicitly acting in any religious function, we must be extra aware of this. If we truly are God's people, we are marked with, 'carrying,' His name, his reputation that others will see, with us in our lives, and we should act accordingly.

But Bishop, sadly, we have never properly understood The Lords Prayer. The concepts of apology and forgiveness are in "Forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspassed against us." Most people do not apologize to each other for wrongs or misunderstandings because their ego will not let them. So the non-apologizers choose to live in a 'separate' hell rather than apologize. Non-apologizers are not conscious of the fact that a sincere apology raises their spiritual vibrations. We come out of our egos when we apologize and we become stronger. Jesus ingeniously set the prayer up for deegoization to occur so the Divine Indwelling can emerge without doubt about it. We silence and lose the false part of our self through apology and forgiveness.

Praying for you, Maria. Try praying the Our Father, paying particular attention to the part about forgiveness. I can attest from personal experience that unforgiveness is an internal poison that destroys you, as your post suggests you, too, know to be true. Scriptures I've found to be helpful in releasing unforgiveness are to practice Jesus' teaching to us in Matthew 5:44 and Luke 6:28. God bless you.

Dear Bishop Barron, Why do we order the Ten Commandments differently from the Protestants? It seems like they split the First into two: Thou shalt not have strange gods before me; and: Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, &c. then combine the Ninth and Tenth into one, as you did in this video. When did this split in the ordering of the commandments start? Was this simply due to the iconoclasts, or does it go back to the split between Jewish and early Christian theology, with the Protestants choosing to use the Jewish numbering, similar to what they did with the Biblical Canon? God love you, Christian.

I think the Exodus Reading numbers above are in error. Thet Ten Commandments in Exodus are Chapter 20.

Good eye, the verses quoted are incorrect. I suspect they put the readings for the 3rd Sunday of Lent in another liturgical year (B or C) rather than year A.

We all need to visit the basics of our faith in Jesus. Love this teaching. Many times I grab my old Bible from years ago and read my notes when I first gave my heart to the Lord. I appreciate this Pastor / Priest kind spirit. Amen

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them”: second of the Ten Commandments. If we had this as the second commandment, we would need not have to split the 10th commandment into two parts. Now, if we already knew this, we are then bearing false witness. If we did not know this, we need to fix this.

“You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's” (Ex. 20:17).

The 2nd Commandment "Thou shall not make any graven images (idols)" is found in my Catholic Bible, & in all Protestant Bibles, as our early Church fathers DID NOT tamper with the Bible. But now when Catholics preach or teach the 10 Commandments, the 2nd Commandment (which forbids making graven images of anything on earth & bowing down to them) is REMOVED, & the 10th Commandment on "not coveting thy neighbour's.." is split into two Commandments, to make sure the total number of Commandments is still 10 (after removing the 2nd Commandment which forbids idol worship). 😮😢As a Catholic, I find this very DISTURBING! Why can't Catholics follow the original 10 Commandments as found in the Bible? This has caused Protestants to accuse Catholics of tampering with the 10 Commandments because Catholics often bow down to statues (idol worship?)!

Thank you Bishop Barron. However, what about the weapons that facilitate these murders? 73.6 percent of homicides involved the usage of firearms.

He said that's from EXODUS? Look up Exodus 20. The second commandment is totally different than what he said...
