I still have a 5 color deck that started as a precon and I went all in on the "5 color things matter" "theme". I love my lands. I have 15 basics, 3 each color, and all the triomes. The only upgrade to the lands would be to use 5 or 10 fast fetches instead of the slow fetches I have. Because of the theme and slow fetches, the deck is very slow and probably went down in power level from out of the box precon but I don't give a hoot, it's janky and fun and I love it. It's great at tables where everyone brings a budget deck or a "I made this with cards I already had" deck (most decks at my lgs like this are not super strong)

Commander was always pretty fun for me, but lately I got better at deck building and found real passion for it. I love brewing my own stuff to the point that ive taken sol ring out of most of my decks to put cards I thought better suit the theme. I do acknowledge that it may be disheartening playing against these 'generically great' commander decks, but you'd also be surprised how little you actually need all the so called staples. And also the feeling of rifling through your collection and finding surprisingly decent c/uc cards that slot perfectly into your deck is awsome!

Earlier in the week I saw a youtuber suggesting people play way more interaction to spice the game up so his guide to building decks was the following: Pick colour(s) 35 lands 10 ramp 15 card draw 15 removal spells 5 board wipes And only then focus on the commander and the theme of the deck. ( have fun making a theme with picking a commander and adding 19 creatures/enchantments/other artifacts that aren't ramp )
@ikaros110Ай бұрын
@@Temuldjin I usually adhere to something like this framework, except I try to find cards that fulfill multiple purposes, maybe drawing the card and doing whatever your deck wants to do. I usually run 5-10 staples at absolute max and still follow this general framework and I feel like my decks play much better ever since
@TemuldjinАй бұрын

I think the important thing is recognising what staples do and do not belong because of what your deck does. I built a Roxanne Starfall Savant recently. It doesn't need almost any creature interaction thanks to multiple attack triggers and flickering causing endless meteorswarms. On theme manadorks instead of ramp. Less rocks if you have green in your color identity. Skip the basic fetching if you're above 2 colours. You can usually tick off most of the needs for draw, interaction, ramp, tutors, so on, on theme.

When i went from 60 cards to edh like 13 years ago what initially drew me was the fact that you could only play each card once, so every game had the potential to be extremely different from the last. A thraximundar good stuff deck was the first deck I built and it was really random. Alas shows like game knights (which I love btw) have kind of destroyed that sense of randomness and excitement towards deckbuilding. Back then we also argued in our playgroup that tutors should not be allowed in edh as it goes against what I understood edh as.

My policy on staples in my deckbuilding is they need to either be on theme for the deck or specifically assist the deck in doing its gameplan. For example for my Flubs deck I bought Exploration and Sylvan library because they do what the deck is doing and solve one of the issues the deck has. Edit: anyone wondering what the issue is, its that Flubs is dead with an even number of cards in hand. Sylvan library is one of many ways in the deck to make sure that doesn't become an issue.
